Re: Puff of blue smoke

They all do that. I've 93K on my '04 R and once in while it puffs a little blue cloud upon startup. Depends upon where the piston/valves stop at shutoff on the left jug. (when left on side stand). It did it at 17K (when I bought it and it does it now). I bought a new '03 (1/03) and it did the same t...

I've no direct experience but I think CycleRob does. Seems to me aviation mechanics might have been a part of his past. Maybe he'll join in.

Jeff I'd almost bet we'd have some things of "faith" in common. I wouldn't be here today without mine. I'm sure I speak for many others we are so glad you've been here and hope you pop in with some words of wisdom and faith! If you end up with another bike this is no doubt the place to com...

Re: Replacement handgrips from China?

I meant to report back. I bought the Ariete as well. Fit exactly as they should. I had an inoperable left heater for a couple years. This was the time to troubleshoot and repair. Found a burnt in two element about 1.5" into the heater coil. Easily repaired with a soldering iron. In the process ...

Re: Is This the Sign of Dreaded Spline Failure? No Power Over 5k RPM

Don't forget, skylarmav1, if you DO have to replace the clutch, get one of the new Italian friction plates with the longer hub that will cover the full length of the gearbox input spline. More-or-less the same cost as a naff OEM Sachs plate, but puts extra service life on your clutch. There might b...

Re: Howdy from Texas - Request for Input Before Purchase

My '04 with 93K has never leaked oil. But your leak may be something as simple as a very slightly loose drain plug or oil filter. As others have pointed out some other leak locations can get expensive. But tell your salesperson that "they DON'T all do that". I've had two with a combined to...

Re: Wanted to say hi and ask for advice

I have gotten as high as 54-55 mpg and that was on the BRP and actually was two-up. Around town and occasionally rolling the throttle (maybe more than "occasionally") it'll quickly get into the 30's! Man, it's hard to not get into it! :) The darn thing is just so much fun to ride.

Re: Wanted to say hi and ask for advice

I've had my best mileage on 89, but if loading the engine heavily it will occasionally ping. I run 93 most of the time. Hyja1....if you find yourself running south sometime give me a call....540-448-5767. Maybe we can meet up for coffee and exchange motorcycle tales.

Re: Need suggestions/advice on seat pad

Another vote for Air Hawk. Fits on my Sargent seat like it was made for it. It will need less air than you might think. At first I started using mine inflated with enough air that my butt didn't feel any contact with the seat. Then I read somewhere that you should inflate it to where you are comple...

Re: Wanted to say hi and ask for advice

I'm wondering if pulling a bottom wire will damage anything. I say that because both plugs (opposite sides) fire at the same time. The load on the coil will change but not disappear. The stick coils I'm less sure of. I pulled the bottom wires on mine troubleshooting years ago when my coils failed. N...

Need suggestions/advice on seat pad

Hoping to leave in two weeks for west Texas from Virginia. To you road warriors: what's the best addition to my Sargent seat for long spells in the saddle? I've got 1400 miles one way to my destination (San Angelo) and will most likely go home by way of Kansas City several days later. Most I've done...

Re: Wanted to say hi and ask for advice

Congrats on the R1150R...hard bike to beat. A lot of good info and advice here. On the low rpm stuff......proper idle is 1050-1100 rpm if I remember right. You probably have what is referred to as a "dual-spark" since you say it's an '04. Primary plug is in the tunnel in end of jug. Those ...

That's good to know. I've an '04 as well with 93K on the clock. I'll be looking at this at some point in the future I'm sure.

Sorry to be so late in responding. I don't consistently get notifications. No by "cycled" I simply mean plug....unplug, and so on. I don't think I've ever replaced them but I am careful to put a small amount of silicone grease on the O-ring each time. 92K and counting. I'm referring to the...
