Re: Beakster Bash "Sweet" 16!! - Franklin WV 5/15-5/19

The great thing about this gathering, is the friendships that have endured, some for many of the 16 years it has taken place. Many of us have moved on to other bikes and other brands but still we get together and enjoy riding, eating and telling tales. I attended the first one in 2004 on a black, 20...

Re: Beakster Bash "Sweet" 16!! - Franklin WV 5/15-5/19

Finally got around to making my reservation! After getting washed out last year, I’m looking forward to meeting up with everyone this year. I’m going to try to dig up some pictures from Bash 1 to share. Long time ago! I had hair!

I got a site some months ago. Looking forward to another weekend at Hungry Mother! We do need to find a breakfast plate, without golden arches!

Re: BEAKSTER BASH XV LaVale, Md May 16-20, 2018

We’ve had several roads washed out or flooded here, including Interstate 26 being closed. Some landslides around also. The back roads are full of gravel and mud. I hated missing this but it turns out there was much to do getting ready for company for wedding tomorrow, so it was a good thing I stayed...

Re: BEAKSTER BASH XV LaVale, Md May 16-20, 2018

Looks like I am reluctantly backing out of this. With the flooding we are having here and along our projected back road route to the Bash, the road conditions will be horrible for the ride up tomorrow. I don't mind riding in the rain, Lord knows, we have done that at other Bashes, but with my limite...

Re: Bike Value and Upgrades

If you want the full size bag on the left, you have to lower the exhaust, or do what many of us did and take off the muffler and replace it with a chrome tip. The sound is deeper but not too loud and most people can ride with you all day and not notice the noise difference. Scratched bags can be res...

Re: Final Drive flush

As long as you don't drain it to find it looking like metal soup (meaning a new final drive!), you are fine.

Been there, done that.

Re: Bike Value and Upgrades

I got nearly $3,000 when I sold my '02 with 89,000 miles after 15 years of ownership. I thought it was a bargain.

It gave me a lot of pleasure and that is what you are paying for. Improvements only add to the pleasure if done right.

But a bike is not an investment. No bike is.

Re: How do you handle stopping on an uphill slope?

Where are you supposed to go if you detect an oncoming vehicle? Unless you the first in line there is no place to go, and if you bolt out into an intersection!! You know Kirby, not all old-timers necessarily agree with you! I am preparing to sign up of Social Security soon myself and I still conten...

As to the original question - yes, leave the bike in gear on a hill! One less thing to coordinate!

Re: How do you handle stopping on an uphill slope?

Unless I have a safety factor of several cars behind me at a light, (stopped!) I leave the bike in gear and far enough off the rear of the vehicle in front of me to have an escape route. As to the rarity of it saving you, it only takes once and I have had my time. I was 2nd in line, checked my mirro...

Re: Change a tire yourself?

I personally know of folks who rode off from 'routine' maintenance and have had brake calipers fall off or wheels get loose because the lug nuts were not tightened correctly. Had a wheel nearly come off our car for the same reason after a 'professional' rotation. Twice! So I was not just repeating i...

Re: Change a tire yourself?

Pay someone to do it right. I have heard many more horror stories of incorrect tire installation from shop "professionals" installations than owner installed tires. A professional just means you get paid to do it, not that you are good at it. (think ladies of the evening! ;) ) But as othe...

Around 67,000 miles. Found out the 2nd final drive bearing was shot at the same time. Not a good day!
