Re: Traded her in
Wow — sounds familiar. About a year ago I sold my ‘02 R1150R (black), which I purchased new from BMW Manhattan. Twenty years of reliable smiles from that machine, and I never dropped it, even once. I’m still in the fold, though, with a 2016 F700GS. And I sold my sweet R to an enthusiast from Califor...

Re: Throttle Hard to Twist
I recently had an issue with the throttle “hanging up” — a delay in returning to idle. Turned out to be rust/dirt/debris in the junction box. A good cleaning resolved the problem completely.

Re: 2004 R1150R Normal oil consumption
My 2002 uses a quart about every 1600 miles, and has since I bought it new. It’s now closing on 60,000 miles. I just add a cup about every 400 miles to keep the level between bottom of the circle and the midpoint dot. It’s so easy to check and add oil on these bikes that I really don’t consider it a...

Re: Tire Mileage
After running Metzelers for years on my R1150R and getting about 6000 miles out of them, I decided to try the Michelin Pilot Road 4s. The only version of this tire that fit my bike was the PR4 GT. DO NOT MOUNT THESE TIRES ON A 500 LB MOTORCYCLE! On the GTs, my bike rode and handled like a garbage tr...

Re: The best motorcycle (now Scottoiler)
Update: Seven months later, the Scottoiler has entirely lived up to its promise. I haven’t had to touch the chain in 5000 miles. It is always lightly lubed, is self-cleaning, and has not needed adjustment. I have no financial interest in this product, but it is the very first modification I would ma...

Re: The best motorcycle
The only fly in the ointment for me is the chain final drive. After I sold my Diavel I swore I’d never own another bike with a chain, but the GS was just too good. The solution: I just had a Scottoiler installed (BMW has an official joint venture with Scottoiler), which is claimed to eliminate the n...

Re: Why do we love riding a bike?
From Robert Pirsig: You see things vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other. In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and...

After about 15 years, my Sargent saddle on my R1150R still looks essentially new. Great productsjbmw wrote:Nope. That seat is so well made, after a decade of my big butt it's the same as it was when I got it, and I got mine USED.

That’s correct — claimed 75 hp vs. 85 hp for the F800GS (which is too tall for me).airhead_irl wrote:A very underrated bike from what I'm reading. They have a slightly de-tuned 800 cc motor, right ?

The best motorcycle
Most of these boards are so moribund, I hesitated to post something new, but WTH. It’s been many years since I’ve owned a middleweight motorcycle, as I always thought I needed “more”. But in early June, a friend and I rented bikes for a week-long tour in Northern California. I chose an F700GS, a mac...

Since no one else has suggested it, when I had this experience, it was the rear shock leaking on the cat.

You’re lucky if they only start leaking — mine let loose with a high pressure spray that soaked my right leg in seconds. Change ‘em now.

Re: The LC forum is a ghost town
I’ve never really wanted a GS — too tall and too ugly. I did test ride a new R1200R recently, and it is a very nice machine. It did not have the ESA, but the standard suspension felt pretty good. When I got back on my Ohlins/Hyperpro equipped ‘50R though, I knew I had all I needed. It’s my “Goldiloc...
