Front master cylinder seals

Hi all :) I have noticed small amounts of brake fluid dropping onto the inside of my handguard on the R850R so it looks like an overhaul is called for. I notice BMW seem to only sell the piston with seals for a silly amount of money. Does anyone know if you can get just the two seals by themselves? ...

DIY Seat Mods

Hi gang Well I have to say that having fabbed up and fitted bar risers and peg-lowering blocks I am VERY happy with the 850... now for the seat! This is the first Beemer I have owned where I have not found the seat to be ideal... it seems to come up too much at the front, bit like a horse saddle I s...

Re: R1150RTP Advice and Seat

I bought an ex-CHP R1100RT-P. I did some research and found: ex-police bikes NOT sold thru dealers are often ones that have been crashed and repaired. Not sure about other agencies but CHP lease theirs from 2 Cali dealers. AT around 60,000miles they are retired, taken back to the dealer, gone over a...

Re: Characteristics of an R850R?

Mine is a 97. The 850 was a much bigger success down here in New Zealand so there are plenty around. I am impressed with mine... but then again I'm just enjoying being back on an oilhead boxer :) I have found the need to make 1 inch bar risers and have just finished fabbing up a pair of rider peg lo...

Re: R1150R/Rockster Cat elemination

The CAT element in BMW's is aluminium foil and won't just break up like the ceramic ones. When I did the one in my RT-P I didn't have access to a welder either... but my local muffler shop happily cut out the CAT and welded the box back up and only charged me $10 :) http://www.myr1100rtp.netfirms.co...

Re: synthetic oil

Hi Kelley :) What mileage has the bike done? Common advise is not to run synthetic until the engine is well and truly run in. I am yet to do my first change on my new bike (well new to me, she's done 60,000km) but when I had my 1100rt-p I ran it on Golden Spectro oil. Apparantly this is the same com...

Re: Low fuel warning light question

The previous owner said about the same, 300km. Thanks guys (Oliver) for the info. Good to know there isn't an actual fault or anything. I have to say though that it seems an odd level to set the warning light... I'd normally expect to get about 20-30 km past the light being solid on... important thi...

Re: Catalytic converter removal

I can add here that my bike is a New Zealand market bike which FROM THE FACTORY has:

No CAT
No O2 (lambda) sensor
No CC Plug

Low fuel warning light question

Hi all When I picked up my 1997 850 the owner mentioned that the low fuel light always came on very early. Is this a known/common thing or what?? Does anyone else have this issue. I find it comes on at about 220km (140miles). What IS the usual city-riding range of a tank on an 850? Appreciate any he...

Re: Catalytic converter removal

Perhaps I need to clarify something here. I did not find any increase in POWER by removing my CAT... if it came across like that then apologies. What I found was better running (engine not labouring so much, smoother idle) and better fuel economy I agree that to get more actual horsepower you would ...

Re: sidestand is too short

Hockey puck screwed to bottom of stand pad. I did that with my F650GS and it worked a treat. The hard rubber puck also meant it had good grip on tarmac and it increased the footprint size which was good for soft surfaces... however some guys in the F650 forum (the chain gang) reckoned it looked lik...

Re: Catalytic converter removal

That seems odd that you wouldn't notice any difference other than sound... not doubting your findings here, just intrigued. And I can't attempt to duplicate my results either 'cause the 850 don't have no CAT... which of course saves me a job which suits me :) The first time I did this was on my old ...

Re: Catalytic converter removal

Sorry mate but my actual, real-world experience begs to differ. My bike was an ex-CHP bike which came over straight from the BMW dealer. It would always have been run on unleaded in CA I'll wager and it certainly ran on unleaded here. I took careful note of fuel consumption over several weeks before...

Re: Catalytic converter removal

:) thanks guys :) As an ex-car mechanic (from about 20 years ago admittedly) my view on CAT's might not be scientific but I have come to the following conclusion: Every vehicle I have removed the CAT from (either Euro bike or Japanese import car) has benefited by getting better mileage-per-tank and ...

Re: Catalytic converter removal

I removed the CAT from my 2000 RT-P and noticed the following: http://www.myr1100rtp.netfirms.com/catelement.htm Just out of interest, my New Zealand-market 1997 R850R does not come with a CAT anyway. I'd take the whole thing into a local shop and get them to do the business... wouldn't think it wil...

Tell me, how much have you had to "massage" the actuating leg on the centre stand??

Thanks
