well iowabeakster, the biggest obstacle is age. 45 is the bright red line for getting what's called the 457 working visa on your own. That can be overcome however if you can find a company that is willing to sponsor your application. There is still hope for OU812  In my case, I have been think...

My first Australia Day! Had a blast. Walked across the Harbour Bridge, hung around at the Rocks and Darling Harbor all day (and night). Weather is PERFECT here in Sydney. My friends back in Detroit tell me its a bit cold about now...... and iowabeakster, I'd be glad to fill you in on how to do it if...

Caroanbill - Thanks for the info, very helpful. I doubt I'll have a spare 20 grand for a while for that 1200R :x If I find a super deal on a used japanese bike I might do something like that. Renting from time to time will probably be the best bet, at least for starters. OT Its thanksgiving here, on...

machew - thanks. I like funny looking food :) DJ - I already have mucho 'excess baggage'. Shaman - I did well on the Midget, but not that well. To ship the motorcycle: 10% of the bike value as duty. about $1,000 to ship. pay to 'test' the bike just to fail Aussie road laws. pay to get the bike to Au...

I'm gonna miss my Rockster, but.....

My long term work visa for Australia has been approved and my wife and I are moving down there in 2 weeks. Gonna live in the Sydney area and do work all around the country. My Rockster will go into storage, shipping it down there is cost prohibitive. At least it's all paid for  and I was able ...

Well I'm pretty sure that my little glitch and Gypsy's are not the same as my engine only died after it went to one cylinder, while Gypsy and others describe a complete, immediate shutdown. I do see a bit of a pattern in that many of us use Shell gas....hmmmm. As to engine braking - I was under the ...

Thanks guys - Here's exactly the sequence: Doing about 50 mph in 5th gear, destination approaching so I begin to slowdown, move to 4th gear, turn getting very near so I move to 3rd gear. Minimal throttle in 4th and 3rd to use engine braking. Pull in the clutch just before the actual turn, notice the...

Anybody else have this happen?

I take my '04 RCK out for a ride last night for about a 30 minute spin. This ride was mostly back roads (4th and 5th gear mostly, ~4000 revs) and also a 10 mile shot down the expressway (6th gear, up to 5500 revs). As I'm coming up my main road I pull into a parking lot. I downshift a few times, the...

Going to the Alps and want to ride!

My wife and I are going to Switzerland this summer and I can take one day to rent a motorcycle and ride some Alps roads. We'll be staying in Grindelwald and I've tracked down a BMW rental place in Thun, which is reasonably close. Interlaken is also close. I'm not sure yet if I want to hire a guide o...

Jeeze sounds like we could put a band together of just R bike owners. Me, I'm a drummer and still play a few gigs a year. I know I know, drummers aren't really 'musicians', but just try and put a rock and roll band together without one. Pretty lame. And I too appreciate the vintage gear. B3s, ...

toolinalong -Man that sounds like a great ride any time of the year.
I'd get maps and do backroads rather than the slab.
You will get rain though, unless you really luck out.
And it will be something you can say you DID.
Everyone likes an adventure..

The police version of the 1150RT is sometimes equipped with oil cooler fans. I don't know if its an aftermarket accessory or a factory option, but they do exist. They seem to be more the size of an AV style 'muffin' fan than a small cpu type fan.

All the consumer-level helmet cam setups will use the standard composite signal to input analog camera video to the digital recording medium, which can be tape, disc, hard drive or pure memory. For an inexpensive setup, Samsung makes a 'sports' setup which is a small, decent quality video cam with a...

Michael - Thanks for the reply and you make an interesting point about Ansel Adams. I guess exotic darkroom techniques are really no different than the skillful use of Photoshop when you think about it. And god knows my best friends are the gamma corrector and the unsharp mask. But whenever I use th...

I tend do disagree about using Photoshop to 'make' the image. That's a tool to create artsy images, or to rescue a badly exposed photo. Relying on it to fix all your images holds you back from really working on getting it right when you release the shutter. Having an eye for composition, light level...

All I know is when I quit using Sunoco, ran a little Seafoam through the system, and switched to Shell V Power, my Rockster is much much happier. Man ya gotta be a chemical engineer these days for everything you gotta know about lubes, gas and liquor.

Slightly OT but I'll never forget a work colleague bringing his brand new Sportster to the office and showing it off to everybody. It was the small one, not the 1200. He's showing it off and I said 'but that's a girl's bike'. The look on his face was priceless. We never saw the little Sportster agai...
