Re: Roadster Lazy Susan

Heh, I remember this thread from when I was a regular too. Considered making one, but got used to rolling my bike out backwards. Driveway is downhill so it's just a matter of keeping balance.

SOLD: BMW R1150R Accessories

I'm getting ready to move, so I'm cleaning some R1150R parts out of my garage. I'm in Southeast Pennsylvania. Buyer pays shipping to North America, and I'll consider sending stuff overseas if I can't find a buyer here. All prices US$ and OBO. Really, I just want to find a home for this stuff. Pictur...

Re: high speed turbulence or need balancing?

Remember that a naked bike will exhibit some instability at high speed due to wind drag, vortex shedding, and high apparent center of gravity. When I rode my Buell XB (naked standard version) at track days, I would experience weave at 100-120 MPH at end of front straight. 120 was all the wimpy XB c...

Re: What does a final drive "feel like" when it's going out?

What does a final drive "feel like" when it's going out? I have a sort of low grinding vibration that I am trying to track down. No metal in the oil, no low oil, and no issues with axles.. So I'm looking for other areas. Thoughts? -Peter Make sure your tires aren't severely scalloped/cupp...

Re: Diagno$i$?

Aussie costs. All R1150 rear drives should be interchangeable. The GS ones have the extra machined holes for the rear mudguard. The GSA (and possibly the GS) has a keyed spline, so you need to ensure any second hand unit has the correct un-keyed spline for the R, or re-use the old one. Some models ...

Re: Fuel smell after removing canister

The reason for having the canister was to filter the gas smell coming out of the vent, so I'd say that's the price you pay.

Re: Engine oil viscosity

This is the short list of what (I think) I know about oil: - Mineral oil starts with the first number, and use viscosity additives to help keep the oil thick when it heats up. Those additives break down over time. Also, the larger difference between the two numbers (5W-50) means more viscosity addit...

Re: So, Leather or Textile

I'm currently in the process of gearing up and have been following the threads with interest. One thing I haven't seen discussed is leather vs textile. I have a heavy leather jacket that is not a riding jacket but I have ridden in it. The wind protection is magnificent. But how does leather do with...

BTW the famous 'C*O*C*K*N*E*Y'* is really no longer with us. Neither is their 'rhyming slang' ( apples and pears = stairs etc. ) And we do NOT speak like D*i*c*k van Dyke in Mary bloody Poppins!! That was possibly the worst ever attempt at a London accent ever! Any questions? Hold on there, i...

Re: Crash Bars or Cylinder Guards?

Ah yes - My crazy Australian Border Collie (ABC). He loves it as much as I do. We're working up to having him certified as a 'FarRider' (1,000 km in 24 hrs) and then I'll see about doing an IBA ride with him (1,600 kms in 24 hrs). As a pillion of course - He's not that smart! That's 1,609.3 km, pal...

Re: Crash Bars or Cylinder Guards?

I'm with OwlDaddy on this one. I had the HB bars on my bike, but since I've been doing track days, I took them off. They do reduce cornering clearance a little bit. On the street though, I'd probably never notice. As others have said, if you crash hard enough to hose up the cylinders, the bike is pr...

Tires: but not the usual suspects

I'm on the fence about a trip to Labrador, Canada this summer, which will involve a few hundred miles of gravel. Has anyone tried either of these dual-sport tires on the R1150R? The GS guys are talking about knobbies, but I can't find any in the right size. - Pirelli MT-60 (http://www.us.pirelli.com...

Re: 02 R 1150R final drive swap

Hi. I am familiar with Airhead final swaps and correct ratios, but I'm not sure what to do with my old/new 02 R1150R bike. I am currently running a 31/11 final ratio. I would like a little more low end, so I don't have to slip the clutch. I am also cruising at 70 @ 3500 rpm. Should I go up to a 2.9...

Re: 200k mile club?

I have a riding buddy that has over 230k on his K1100RS, but that's not exactly apples to apples (although it does appear to use the same or a very similar rear-drive unit). Another has 80k-ish on her 2005 R1150R. I have 31k on my 2004, so I don't have anything to talk about. 230k??? Really?? If tr...

Re: 1150 hid upgrade

Howis the light spread pattern with the HID bulb in the decidedly low-tech housing on the R1150R (and probably R1100R)? I've heard that HID shouldn't be tried in mounts that use the glass to aim the light, since it's not precise enough and you'll have light shooting all over the place (including oth...

Re: 1150 hid upgrade

The HID system is installed on the R1100R. Not exactly a smooth install, The bulb unit is too long and will not fit in headlamp housing when installed. I had to use a Dremel to grind the spot welds off the lamp mount and move it in 3/8". This also required grinding the bulb reflector due to ne...
