Re: Potential sale price inquiry

Hey nylife With the loss of your friend it sounds like you are done with riding. That's entirely your call. The quickest way to move a Beemer is to remove every accessory you can and return to original. Then list it for the lowest price you can live with. And then accept less. Beemers are hard to se...

Re: New owner with questions

scriber -

From your post you are ready to ride a standard R12R across the continent. You don't need any gadgets. My only concern is the pillion seat puts a lot of pressure on the nether regions of the female anatomy over longish distances but an air hawk or sheepskin will fix it.

enjoy!

Re: upgrade R1200R non-ABS to ABS

i got a great deal on my non-ABS R12R back in '08. I love it and dont miss ABS at all. If I wanted to go back to ABS, I would sell it and buy an R12 with factory ABS. Retro-fitting ABS is not really viable financially or mechanically.

Re: R1200R - would it be a wise choice?

Going a little OT but Its an interesting one.... I sometimes find myself making foolish assumptions about the rider from the badge on his bike. I recently spent all morning trying to stay with a new guy on a group ride riding a full dresser Harley. He waited till after lunch to tell us he'd spent $4...

Re: R1200R - would it be a wise choice?

the R12R carries its weight pretty low so I find it as easy to manhandle around the carport as a 500 or a scooter. On a trip, I found my R1150R lacked the top end to keep up with Japanese 1000s. The R12R has the punch to keep you in touch. Gas mileage? Fill up every other stop when riding with the I...

Only 58,000km from headlamp bulb!!

My 12R blew a headlamp bulb this week. In Australia the main beam is always switched on so 58,000km continuous use was not too bad. Pleasant surprise for me is that a spare bulb is ever-present in the form of the separate, identical high beam bulb. Now to find a generic replacement so I can avoid th...

Re: If you had to choose between Seat or Shock to upgrade

Depends on the kind of riding you do. If you do a lot of miles on Motorways and freeways, change the seat. Stock shock is fine for slab. if you chase curves and switchbacks, change the shock. Stock seat is fine if you're moving your weight around a lot. I changed my front shock to Ohlins a few years...

Re: Finally broke something

I had a K100rs and recall the stand was designed differently. It was a fair bit heavier than the R12R, too. I never rode either off the stand. I would normally mount the bike and shrug it off the stand whilst standing over it. I think I've stressed mine by twisting it side to side after parking it. ...

Finally broke something

After 5 years and 55,000km I finally had something go wrong with my R12R! The centrestand had been sluggish to retract for the last couple of weeks but yesterday it broke and the bike lurched drunkedly to the right. I use the centrestand 95% of the time and tend to make minor 'adjustments' to the an...

Re: Kill Switch

I've always thought the 'kill' switch was poorly labelled. I think it is more like a 'starter'' switch. I can't imagine starting a bike by twisting a key in the centre of the handlebars - it's unstable. The 'starter' switch allows you to make the starter live before you fire the motor. Hands on the ...

Re: Should I Sell or Store?

Radar - Where in Sverige? Stockholm or Goteborg? I've been to Goteborg for work a few times and .....the winters are long. it will cost you a grand to keep it a year and at least $500 in depreciation so if you get your price you might as well sell. If you cant sell you are welcome to park it in the ...

Re: Refitting seat?

You need to mate the front of the seat with the 2 prongs on eiter side of the tank. I tend to present the seat to the frame in a downwards and forward motion till it's snug. Then push down on pillion seat to latch. I've also found the rubber lugs under the seat can be screwed in or out to improve th...

Re: New member, new BMW owner..

I run Dino oil. Don' t see the point of the more expensive stuff but opinions vary. I think the key is to run it hard. I babied my last R bike and it used oil till I sold it at 100k. I ran my current R12 hard from the day I got it and it uses no oil between services.

Re: Heated Handgrips failure

Ok so I'll see if there's anything crudding up the switch (unsurprising given my poor washing habits) and if that doesn't fix it I'll let the service guys plug it in for an error code.

I live in Sydney - don't need the grips enough to spend hours/$$$ on a fix.

Thanks for the notes guys.

Heated Handgrips failure

This morning my 4 year-old R12R failed to warm the right grip. When I flicked it on and off the left grip also failed. Anyone come across this? Given the complexities of CANBUS I wouldn't know where to start tracing a fault. Bike is bog stock standard - no electronic accessories like ABS ASC and nev...

I fitted a customized headlight protector to my bike 45000km ago. Despite a fair amount of battle damage on the forward flanks, the headlight remains unmarked. Currently priced at about $50AUS. Tom http://69.73.189.40/~amhphdx2/amhpshop/popup_image.php?pID=543&invis=2&osCsid=f7b583f887ba5897...

Re: Track Day

I've done a few track days over the years and I've never felt short of brakes. The grip at the track is way better than on the road. You might want to carry a little spare oil if your 12 uses it. I would drop the tyre pressures, firm up the suspension and just ride the hell out of the bike. It is re...

Re: Help with mirrors

I've never had a problem with loose mirrors but they are only secure if you have the arms pointing a fair way forward. I think the thread is designed to tighten up when the arm is at 10 o'clock on the left and 2 o'clock on the right. They are generic in design - you rotate the mirror face for the si...
