Re: Wheel Flange recall

Don, Thanks very much for your explanation. Just as I suspected, I'm a "low information" metallurgist and engineer! The Pilot 3's are beginning to square, so when the dealer removes the wheel to replace the flange, I'll still save $ on the tire change without doing the work myself. Gonna t...

Re: Wheel Flange recall

I've been dragging my feet to schedule the wheel flange replacement. While I'm no apologist for BMW (fuel strip), I think they may have gotten screwed on this recall. I have carefully inspected my aluminum wheel flange with a 10x jeweler's loupe and it is fine. I have always followed the BMW torque ...

Re: Riding Style & Tranny Bearing Life

Thanks guys. The tranny work has been done and it no longer makes a "whirring" sound when running in neutral and the clutch out.

Riding Style & Tranny Bearing Life

I took my '07 R12R with 65K miles into the SF dealer for what I knew would be an expensive service: new ABM rotors, EBC HH pads, brake flush, Ohlin steering damper, new rubber boots @ both ends of final drive ($150 parts!), change all fluids, adjust valves & balance throttle bodies and perform f...

Is Boxer Durability Unsurpassed?

As I was driving home from the lumberyard yesterday, I took a call from a sub I needed to speak with that I had been missing all day. Using a cell phone while driving without a "hands free device" is illegal in CA (even though I've lost count of how many cops I've seen chatting on their ph...

Re: Wonderlich Seat

I had the Sargeant modification done and was pleased overall with their work and the ergonomics. However, the stock pan is not very robust where it attaches at the the front near the tank. My original pan had both sides break where the rubber feet are and BMW replaced it under warranty. This new Sar...

Re: Bay Area R1200R sighting - black/pinstripes + caliper li

SF, Yes, I have the Moto Lights set-up. When I bought the bike in '07, I was reading everything I could find and somewhere I read that creating a lighting triangle aided other motorists with depth perception. It was written that this triangle lighting is used on trains. The caliper mounting location...

Hi SF_Hooligan,

That would be me you've seen. You get off 580 @ High St. also, don't you? I'll be sure to wave (or attempt a high five!) next time.

Re: Adjustable Handlebars Redux

David, Good on ya for having the patience and dedication to get exactly what you wanted; seems like a fine solution. My second thought is about rearward vision through the mirrors. I finally ordered those mirror mount extender thingies from Sierra BMW because I decided an even wider bike was worth b...

Re: Why is the DOHC oil fill on the Right side?

I've no idea why the change in oil filler location to opposite the sight glass, but I don't care because for me the two are unrelated. I changed the oil (Motorex) last Sunday in typical fashion: Remove drain plug, loosen filter and puncture it three times with my Makita right angle impact and #10 sc...

Sorry to post and run, but I had a lot to do away from home today and am just logging back on. Don, The "Der Kaiser" comment was definitely meant as a compliment and as recognition of what I view as your authoritative position on this board. I gather your career was in some field of engine...

Re: Excited! New Suspension Tuesday.

I'll likely regret yanking the chain of "Der Kaiser", but apparently I cannot resist. You Don, posted Klaus' comments. That you did so verbatim and with his permission does little in my mind to ameliorate your responsibility for their effect and taking the position of "Hey, don't shoo...

Re: Tiny leak?

Don, You're right, I never had an airhead. When I first noticed the misting, I thought nothing of it since when I rode a Triumph in the 70's, I had to keep a good supply of oil(s) handy and that's why I missed my opportunity to get the repair done under warranty. When I relayed the above to the deal...

Re: Tiny leak?

Don, As we know, BMW's don't leak anywhere unless something is not right. I've been down this road previously, with a small leak exactly where and how you describe yours, which progressed into replacing 5 different seals and $1,500. at 30 months old and 39K miles (BMW declined to assist with the rep...

Re: 07 R1200R Final Drive

Give the final drive housing a couple punches with the heel of your hand as you rotate the brake rotor, moving to a rubber mallet (gently) if need be; it'll come apart.

Re: The Wudo Fairing - Does it deliver smooth air?

I have a WUDU on my '07 R12R. I had a Cee Bailey 16" mounted on the BMW touring bracket previously and had quite a bit of turbulence. Reading all the threads about all the screens some had purchased that they still were not happy with, had me not wanting to go down that road. Plus, and of cours...

42,000 miles to break-in?

My '07 R12R has always required additional oil between the 6K mile change intervals. Upon changing and filling to the top of the circle when warm, right around the 3K mile mark it would be near the bottom of the circle and I'd fill back to the top of the circle. At 36K I tried the Motorex Boxer oil ...

Re: Sad day for BMW of Santa Cruz

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to hear of a change in service staff at the "motos", as that was the source of my problems previously. I'm sure you'll be impressed after a visit to the SF store; nicely presented with a terrific service department.

Hi Chumley,

I'm curious about your comment re: the SF shop, as I had bad experiences at both the Mountain View and Livermore shops, but very good treatment at the SF shop. Care to elaborate?

Thanks,

John
