Re: DIY rear brake rotor r-square continued

Post script. The pads that came off were EBC sintered with over 40K miles and they were still in good shape. I'll hold on to them for spares. I can't even begin to guess how many "spare" sets of rear pads I have now.. plus pads from the Lexus, Cayenne, etc. Not so bad I feel OK throwing t...

DIY rear brake rotor r-square continued

This a really simple job. In addition to the replacement parts (in my case, Lucus rotor, organic pads, and new bolts from Hornig) you have to craft a long shank T40 torx bit to access the bolts through a recess on the bottom of the final drive. I purchased a 1/2" drive long shank bit on ebay fo...

DIY rear brake rotor r-square

At 80k miles it's time. Parts just arrived from Hornig. I'm having a 3" T-40 torx bit machined down and then I'll give it a shot.

Re: Going to look at a 2007 R12R today

Before you sign the papers and take it home, have the dealer take a look at the fuel tank under the fuel filler cap and behind the alternator belt cover. Based on some issues discovered by members of this forum, serious corrosion may be present. These issues are discussed here: http://www.r1150r.org...

Re: Rear Drive Fluid

I've been using Liqui-Moly full synthetic 75W90 weight gear oil for thousands of miles. It's included in the maintenance kits I purchase from Beemer Boneyard. I use it in the transmission too. No specific reason other than convenience and cost savings and they give a discount if you enter "advr...

Re: Saddlebags

Yep! Blue locktite screwed up my plans to disassemble the cases and lubricate/repair the mechanisms as they were getting very hard to open (I found a procedure on an R1200RT forum). Started with the left case. Four of eight screws now spin in place! Fortunately there are two screws on each hinge hal...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Update. I disconnected and inspected the cable that plugs into the instrument cluster. The contacts looked absolutely new. The clock seemed to work for a few days but the fault returned. I took it to the dealer to have the instrument cluster control unit re-flashed. Again, the clock worked for a few...

Re: Valve Cover/Powder Coating

Good morning all! My recently acquired 2014 R1200R had one previous owner for a couple of hundred miles - he apparently managed to drop it at some point, scuffing up one of the valve covers. It's not a huge deal to me - it's covered by the MaMo guards anyway - but I'm having a skid plate powder coa...

I realize this might not be an appropriate post for this forum, but when we are not lovingly wrenching our R12Rs, we are riding them.

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Interesting. There seems to be a tie-wrap on the right side of the cluster (left side in photo..) If it's holding any wires associated with the cluster that's the first place I'd look. BMW if infamous for over-tightening tie-wraps, eventually damaging the wire it's holding in place. If it isn't hol...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

A little more gentle probing and I got it. I was looking for something hard and it's easy... At the bottom of the cover there is a tab, push it in with a screw driver and simply pull the bottom of the cover back, up, and off. http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i393/txplants/Misc/speedo%203_zpsedgbo...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Well, I finally began to dig into the instrument cluster and troubleshoot this issue. My plan was to start by unplugging the connector and cleaning the contacts. Problem is I can't even get the back cover off of the instrument cluster. Seems to be attached in three places and I see rubber grommets a...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

I had intermittent issues when starting my bike where it seemed like it was about to die and my clock would reset to noon. At some point, I got a brake failure warning and then my bike wouldn't turn on at all. It was just a slightly loose battery connection. So, on the off chance that it is this si...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Given your symptoms - if it was me (and I am somewhat experienced in electronic tech stuff) - I'd be pulling the instrument cluster, disassembling it and looking for anything odd - like corroded or loose connectors between components, or burned components, or bulging capacitors. It might be just th...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

The trip meters do not reset, but oddly if one or the other is selected when I shut of the ignition and pull the key, it has toggled to the odometer when I reverse those steps. I don't have access to my bike today, but I'm pretty sure this behavior is normal...or at least my bike's always done it. ...

Thanks for the reply, Don. The trip meters do not reset, but oddly if one or the other is selected when I shut of the ignition and pull the key, it has toggled to the odometer when I reverse those steps. Also, as a twist, I just walked out and turned on the ignition, and the clock has been running s...

Well it worked for about 48 hours and is now back to malfunctioning.
