Re: Alaternator Dilemma...

Hey Vex, I once had an identical situation with my 02R. You might have a look at the electrolyte levels in the cells of your battery. Mine had boiled off to the point where the battery would not take a charge properly from the alternator. After topping off the levels and reconnecting everything the ...

Re: enough on Spline Failures

02 R1150R, 48k miles, no spline failure yet.

Though I did have to replace the final drive pivot bearings (the inexpensive little ones, not the big expensive crown bearing) at 42k.

MC shocks price...

 At 43k miles, my beloved R is due for new shocks. And again I'm reminded of replacing both front shocks on my S-10 SUV last year for $60. Motorcycle shocks seem to come with a 1000% premium on price, which is perplexing to me as a consumer. So I am obviously curious about the situation. Is t...

The buffetting is lessened considerably for me with the addition of a tank bag.

Hey Butch, Good things have been said about bar-backs on our R's. I'm about the same height and inseam as you, and have noticed that when totally naked (i.e. no windshield  ) the stock bars seem to fit about right. But with no wind to lean into when the shield is on it is in fact a bit of a re...

Yikes!!! What a bummer Osiris! And thank goodness you're alright! Since you're in the states, you might want to check places like: http://www.beemerboneyard.com when you begin replacing some of the non-upgrade parts. Heal quick my friend!! p.s. - I didn't know there were any S curves in Florida. :sh...

Drive Line Lash feels harsher lately - Hmmmm.....

Here is a question for the venerable mechanics on the board. When I originally purchased my beautiful Piedemont Red (torquiest color) roadster I was impressed by how the drive line, while having a certain amount of freeplay lash to it, seemed fairly well "damped" when transitioning between...

My vote goes to: Cam Chain Tensioner. The bike is about the same age as mine, and I was recently experiencing much the same symptom as described in the original post. Knocking when idling or putting around at slow speeds. Essentially a loud, annoying, slap-rattle-knock. It is no fault of previous ow...

Queenpdog, The clunk when decelerating could be a result of the shaft free-play reversing when you roll of the throttle and the drive train goes from engine pushing to engine braking. Your 'knocking' symptoms sound strangely familiar. What year is your bike & how many miles are on the odo? If it...

Dwayne, There was once a story about a person who had fuel pump problems with his brand new KLT. He had a horrible experience with BMW repeatedly not being able to find the real problem. They eventually tracked it down to a bad relay. I think they referigerated the relay overnight, installed it, sta...

Exhaust valves too tight? My Virago exhibited similar behavior once. Started and ran fine until entirely warmed up, at which point the idle would drop and try to stall. I turns out that the valve lash was too smal, and when the engine heated up thermal expansion of metals resulted in valves that nev...

Don't know about the rest of you, but I only use synthetic oil when I KNOW I'll be using the kill switch alot over the next 3000 to 5000 miles. Further to that, and regardless of dino vs synth choice, the viscosity range can then be determined based upon preferences for engine braking and side stand...

I second the Cap'n. My right side rocker end play was a little excessive last spring and it was noticeable as a consistent 'tick' 'tick' 'tick' sound after the bike was all warmed up. With the engine still cool, the thicker oil probably dampened the side to side movement to the point where it was le...

My fuel light comes on when I've used 3.8 Gallons (U.S.). Having looked at the electrical trip mechanism when I had the pump out to change the filter, I would guess that is pretty consistent for us R1150R's be they rocksters or roadsters. I know I've got up to 1.2 gallons of reserve before things ge...
