Re: Fuel strip calibration

I took my 2012 R1200R out to zap it. Its not too hard. Keep everything clean. Don't know if its the same as an 07 I had to reach into the tank to unhook the top. It does not need to come out to recalibrate. Its done by BMW with an electronic tool. They calibrate it at 1 gallon last I knew. I read so...

I just smile. Its usually a Big V Twin thinking they can whoop my butt.

A smile and casual wave is all I need. Nothing to prove here.

Re: Final Drive Oil - Change Frequency

Changing the crown bearing is EASY with a press. Its a long story. I had a leak. NO slop in the bearing. SO I ordered the seal and 2 O rings. Heated and pulled the flange with a puller I made out of a plate with 3 holes using the lug bolts. I changed the seal, noting the wear ring behind it was not ...

Re: Expected range of mileage on dry clutch and signals it's time to replace?

I tore my 2000 R1100Rt down at 100,000 miles. Clutch still good, splines good.

At 136,000 splines were ready to strip, only a few thousandths left.

Friction material was fine.

Re: Final Drive Oil - Change Frequency

YES the "big" bearing runs in the same oil as the rest of the FD, no seals on the bearing. There is a replaceable wear ring on the shaft for the inner seal. I had to get a new one. Zero problems. I had a trip to Bennington VT with pillion and bags full, 700 miles some on Expressway. No lea...

Re: Final Drive Oil - Change Frequency

I had a similar problem First Final drive oil change, it looked like mud, and maybe it had water. After that change it was pretty good. A couple times it looked like it had water, so I am more careful when I power wash the bike. No more problems. I developed a leak around 50K miles. I ended up repla...

Ohlins modification

I put a set of Ohlins on my 2012 R1200R. I found the preload adjuster to be difficult to use and required many turns on the small knob with my big hands. I then put the original preload adjuster on the new shock. Same thread and banjo bolt. I now get twice the spring preload travel with much less ef...

Re: Final Drive Play (Sorry guys)

I have had my FD seal out, it was leaking. I had to heat the flange to get it off, then the seal was there, next. I could see the "big" (not so big) ball bearing with oil in it. My seal failed, so did the ring it rides on which is replaceable. (Item 3) 2012 R1200R. Maintained properly. Wat...

Re: 2011 and on R1200R has a breather plug on FD???

Many here have said the first diff oil change was an odd color. Mine was too.

I would not worry about it. I use 180 ml just like it says. I change the diff oil every tire change.

Re: Adventure riding on a R12R?

Any motorcycle ride is an adventure.

Can you ride dirt? Yes, be careful, your bike weighs a little more than the V.

I find my R1200R does FAR better on dirt roads than my R1100RT.

Re: 2011 and on R1200R has a breather plug on FD???

I have drained it with the drain plug and filled it in the vent with the recommended amount. I think its 180 ml or 6 ounces. This can be done with out taking the wheel off. My FD started leaking. I cleaned the vent and the leak went away. That was at 20,000, its now at 33,000 with no leaks. I change...

Re: Front wheel bearings?

I have my own way of removing the bearings. Store the new bearings in the freezer. Yank out the inner race with a slide hammer. Weld a bead around the inside of the outer race that is stuck in the wheel. When the race that was welded cools, it will shrink and FALL out. The hub is now preheated to be...

Re: Long Distance with the R1200R

I have done a few 2000 mile rides in 6 days. That is all I care to do on any bike.
I recommend the camhead which would be an 11 and up. It depends on your budget, but buy as new as you can. My last bike was an RT. I don't miss the extra weight.

Re: Cold weather exercise? To start or not to start.

If your battery went dead in a week, something is wrong. My first internet diagnosis is the battery is shot. Don't take my word for it, look for a draw. If you charge it and let it sit for a week unhooked from the bike, you will know. If it is dead or almost after a week unhooked from the bike, its ...

Re: Driving on mountain roads

.... I don't use my brakes so engine braking helps.... David, An interesting choice... why? Good brakes and hard braking make for faster times through corners. Pads and rotors cost hundreds of dollars; an engine costs thousands. I am not going to hurt the engine no matter how much it costs. As long...

Re: Driving on mountain roads

In the twisties, I keep the RPM up there. I don't use my brakes so engine braking helps. This also keeps the bike ready like a cat standing on its toes ready to pounce.

Electronic rev limiter is a wonderful thing.

YMMV

Re: Cold weather exercise? To start or not to start.

7 years old. Do yourself a favor and get a new battery. IMHO If you start it up in this weather (or any time) you should let it come to operating temps to get the moisture out of the exhaust and also to warm the oil up. Other wise your better off leaving it on a battery maintenance charger. He has ...

That is simply awesome testing. As thorough as it gets. I have tested industrial batteries for a long time. These tests go way over the top.
