Re: Clutch bleed question

Maybe you're right, yes. Thanks for the video reference. I did think of that though in the end the process is the same: crack the bleeder to flush or bleed, pump or Mity-Vac which I used. CH is tugging (and swearing at BMW) to separate the parts using a vice. I'd really be swearing if I kinked or br...

Re: Clutch bleed question

AL, no, I didn't separate the two major parts in your photo. I unscrewed the allen screw, and used a couple different bleeders screwed in to replace it. Then replaced the allen screw. I'm sure I was able to flush the clutch fluid that way and I doubt there's any air bubbles though I haven't ridden i...

Re: Clutch bleed question

Steve, I still have a question about accessing the speed bleeder. I have an SB1010S in hand (in fact 2) but it won't thread into the bleeder unit because the point on the bleeder bottoms out before the threads make contact. Is that typical? Did you have to grind off some of its point?

Re: Where's that brakes flush procedure ?(nonABS)

I found I just wasn't using the right tools to crack the allen plug. With the rubber sleeve rolled up/back at both ends of the clutch slave unit I used a 3/8" drive ratchet with and allen wrench at the allen plug and a flare type 12 mm open end at the other and "crack" - the plug came...

Re: Clutch bleed question

Well, I got the plug out with a allen drive on a 3/8 rachet, and a 12mm flare open end wrench on the bottom, no heat. An audible crack aid it was loose. With some persuasion the rubber wrap will roll toward the center at both ends and stay there. The bleeder's in the mail headed my way. This is a we...

Re: Clutch bleed question

Radical, Thanks for your reply. I can see that heat would expand the outer housing around the allen screw. I've got a heat gun but would like to work the rubber sleeve off, maybe work a lubricant under it first. Yes, clearly the bleeder is necessary; I ordered the one you recommend. I figure on usin...

Clutch bleed question

I've peeled back the rubber cover at both ends of the bleed assembly, allen wrench in black outer end and an open end wrench on the bright inner end but nothing budges. Does the allen wrench plug unscrew (making way for a bleeder) or does the whole assembly unscrew under the rubber in the middle?

Re: Where's that brakes flush procedure ?(nonABS)

Radical1150R, thanks for the CycleRob link. That's what I remembered and was looking for. The job is done, satisfyingly thorough! Now I'm wrestling with the clutch bleed valve. Thought I'd done that before too, I'm finding the bleed assembly impossible to crack. I'll post that separately.

Re: Where's that brakes flush procedure ?(nonABS)

Guys, thanks for the feedback. Sykospain, thanks for the careful description of bleeding with speed bleeders. Your method seems like an improvement on traditional bleeding. BMW, however, recommends pulling all 3 calipers annually and fully depressing all pistons to drive out used fluid before pumpin...

Where's that brakes flush procedure ?(nonABS)

I did a flush successfully a couple years ago but omitted it last year because I hardly rode. My guidance then was Clymers and a very good text and photos description posted here which I can't now find - a process more detailed even than Clymers. Anyone remember seeing that? A link will do - TIA!

No argument there,sj. The added light make a huge difference with night driving. I'm enjoying it too. Much better to see the deer with!

Re: Aux light mounts

Trouble with those is that they are so close to the headlight that they're not great for conspicuity - helping another rider/driver judge your location and speed. For that a forks or frame/tank mounting is more effective. Personally, that's at least as important as better night vision.

Re: Air filter replacement

Probably I'm the only guy who didn't know this but I found that the problem is that the front of the box (toward the battery) needs to be forced forward a bit for the lid to drop down at the rear. I tried closing the lid with the filter out and the lid only closed down around the rear edge when I le...

Re: Air filter replacement

Rob, thanks for your very clear advice. I understand your scribing description though on mine, tight as it is, maybe I can get a needle back there under the rear lip to scratch mark the tabs. You don't say whether you've pulled the tank though it sounds like you might have. It looks like the left co...

Air filter replacement

I pulled the old filter and found it fairly clean but dented at the upper opening as if it had't seated properly. I have undone the right hand tank brace and lifted the tank as far as it goes easily which is much less than the Haynes photos of this procedure shows. I also can't get the upper cover f...

Re: Cracked flange on final drive

I'm a welder and would fix this break if I'd done it to myself! Fortunately you have the second flange to help locate the broken one exactly. The piece needs to come off the bike and be stripped of moving parts and cleaned because it will require preheating before TIG welding. Strip it down and find...

I lost an R69S on the Berkeley campus on day when I'd forgotten my chain. Bad day! Now, traveling on the road, I lock the steering head and cover it.

Re: When is it time to practice taking a passenger in an emp

My wife used to ride with me and we both enjoyed it. If it's fun for one, carving along a mountain road, why not for two? You can talk some even w/o electronics. No squirming around is right. As an experienced rider/racer friend once told me, in terms of movement you need your pillion to be a "...

Re: Ever run into a driver who purposely messes with you?

I had a truck driver take a swing at me at a stoplight in Richmond CA as I was lane splitting to pull up to the head of the cars lined up. Fortunately, I was moving along, saw his face and upraised fist in the driver's side mirror in front of me, and ducked so he just grazed my back. I got to the he...

Re: uneven front tire wear -bearings?

Politics aside, and for whatever reason, I think at least some of us are better cornering one way or the other. During a past auto racing obsession someone pointed out that I cornered better right than left. Never occurred to me. On the roadster though, much more confident/comfortable laying into ri...
