Re: Spline concerns on Rockster with 40,000 miles

My 2004 Rockster is close to 40k miles. A mates 2001 R1150R had his splines go badly at just 18K miles - though I also think his bike had seen a lot of stop-start city work with a ham-fisted owner with no clutch control... but it still should not happen. I have a (totally unsubstantiated) theory - t...

Re: ABS or not ABS?

My 2004 Rockster (bought with just 2,057 miles on it in 2007) is non-ABS.... which is what I wanted due to the issues and complexity of the ABS. I also rode a Rockster WITH ABS on a test ride... and hated it. Maybe the Rockster's braided lines made it sharper... but I felt like the servo-assisted AB...

Re: Helmets

Caberg Trip Flip Front jobbie for me. Getting on a bit now and I'm pretty sure this model is discontinued. One-handed open/close easily and intuitively, and the flip-down sun visor is dead useful - you can even drop it just a bit to shade your eyes without dropping it fully (which you can't on many ...

Re: Nitrogen in tires.

Personally I'm just happy if I can keep ordinary air in my tyres! After nothing for years and years, in recent times I've had 3 punctures, one of which wrecked a rear tyre with loads of wear left :x ! At least I can testify that the OE BMW Puncture Repair kit works really well (at least on ordinary ...

Re: Clutch replacement howto

I've hit a snag with the battery tray, though: I'm not sure how to remove it without disconnecting the throttle cables...there's a bowden in a slot underneath the tray. Is that even possible without removing them from the throttle bodies? My memory is pretty rubbish.... but I'm sure we never remove...

Re: Clutch replacement howto

I did my one and only clutch (so far) on a mate's R1150R over a year ago now. but with 2 people you can save time by pulling wheel, diff and swingarm as one unit . I did this - definiteky a good idea - saves loads of time an hassle. I'd change the pressure plate etc - the whole kit. Its too much faff...

Re: Weird tire wear...help!

More wear on one side than the other is common - at least on the FRONT tyre (tire in American). Various theories abound regarding road camber and so on. However, the best one and most likely (IMO) is that the side nearest the crown (centre - [center?]) of the road wears most simply because this side...

Re: New Rockster - Tyres

I've tried the.... Bridgestones (on when I got the bike. Ok but too expensive) Mich PR2 (last well, but I could never quite get on with the feel or lack thereof on the front) Maxxis (very good feel actually, and the front lasts well and feels fine, but the rear wore out way too fast). Haven't tried ...

Re: GS hand guards on an R1150R - part XXVII

FWIW... I've put a set of BMW R1150GS Handguards on 3 handlebar types i.e. Rockster, then R, lastly GS. My Rock had stock bars with bar-backs when I first fitted handguards. I then put a pair onto a friends R1150 for him after he'd ridden my bike with them on. Finally when I fitted GS bars to my Roc...

Re: rockster seat

Just in case... the R1150R and the Rockster seats (F & R) are the same (as you'd expect). So any seat variant for one will also fit the other.

As others suggest, I too am 99% sure the RT stuff is incompatible with the R.

Re: Bar Risers

I have R1150GS 'bars on my Rockster, and if routed properly the throttle cable isn't a problem. With the rise of the GS 'bars the throttle and brake lines are very marginal though. I got away with the brake (just) with a bit of mucking about, and to get the clutch line working I pulled the tank back...

Re: Neutral when shifting first to second

My 35K Miles '04 Rockster gearbox has got better with time - its slicker now than when i had the bike with 2k miles for sure :D I can happily shift from 1st through 5th clutchless or with the clutch with no problems. I find that shifting FAST as well as POSITIVELY equals a reliable change every time...

Re: non abs brakes

RB - did you actually fit a new m/c then? If you didn't then surely now that is the place to go looking? I'm not expert for sure, but I'd be looking at the m/c, as without fluid leaks evident, and being unable to build up pressure (which even with a bit of air in the system should still occur), then...

Re: new rockster owner

Hi. I have one of those luggage tray things that goes in place of the passenger seat in my loft somewhere - never used it. TBH I could not really see the point of the tray when you can bungee tailpacks or drysacks onto the passenger seat just as easily and retain the option to bung a person on there...

Re: R1150R and R1150R Rockster

I have an 04 Rockster with 34K miles up and I think the main differences are: The same gearbox with a lower 6th gear as the R1150GS Adventure Clocks off the R1100S Sportsbike Wider rear wheel (180 section v 170 on the 'R') - again off the R1100S Front forks off the 1100S Specific to Rockster shocks ...

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner

Mixr. Thanks for the detailed reply and the pics - the change in bolt-head size is handy and good to know. I'll have to go and peer at my bike and check it out, as my bike was registered in 2004 so I suppose it could be either. As for rattling.... well, it's an air-cooled boxer so it does clatter a ...

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner

Is the LH Tensioner failure THAT common then, and should I be doing mine? I have a 2004 Rockster with 34-odd thousand miles on it. Is there a typical lifespan or likely fail mileage for this part? I suppose the LH one fares worse as it's 'the wrong way up' so drains out of oil when stationary (thus ...

Re: Before I Replace The Rear Wheel?

I'll check mine next time more carefully then! They looked fine when I changed the tyres earlier this month, but I'll scrutinise them next time I've got the wheel off! Will admit I've put (a tiny bit of) copper grease on my rear wheel bolts - simply because when I got the bike it was 3 yrs old and m...

Re: Before I Replace The Rear Wheel?

Copper grease doesn't 'go off' so if you don't have any fresh stuff, I'd say it's better to leave what you've got on the threads already in place rather than put the bolts in 'dry'. I think the purpose of copper grease is it helps to prevent the different materials (the steel of the bolt & the a...
