Re: 304 miles on tripmeter and showing 159miles to empty..

I'm afraid that I grew up on British bikes that didn't have a fuel gauge - although I admit they did have a reserve as long as you had remembered to move the fuel tap in the correct direction when you turned the gas on. I'll look for fuel around 150 - 180 miles even though it sometimes only takes ju...

My 2012 model has exactly the same symptoms as you have described - I zero one of the trips when I re-fuel and ignore the fuel gauge.

Re: New to the gang and seat questions!

Ha Ha - now I understand your problem!
I assumed (wrongly) that you needed to be closer to the ground - sorry for the confusion.

Hope that you can get it sorted - it's a great bike - I have the 1100R and think that it's the best bike I've ever had.

Re: New to the gang and seat questions!

You do know that the seat can be moved into three different positions (heights) don't you?
The lowest position sets the seat at 760mm (which is pretty low) and also closer to the bars.

Re: Topcase R1100R

I fitted the Givi Monorack originally and I didn't like the look of the bike and it made it very difficult to fit the right hand pannier - it pushed out the fitting rail so that the pannier could not locate on rear of the passenger foot rest as it should do - I had to slacken the bolt holding the fo...

Re: Topcase R1100R

I fixed the alloy base plate from a Givi Wingrack that I happened to have to the standard BMW luggage rack. Hi Mike

I'm sure that you have the perseverance to see this to a satisfactory conclusion and I hope that you will get back with whatever turns out to be the final solution - I'm intrigued to know the outcome - Good luck.

Re: Help with r12r low throttle response issue

It's interesting what you say about the difference between your bike and your friend's GS. How do the tick-over RPM figures compare on the two machines? Is it possible that your bike's tick-over is set at a lower figure? If so this could cause a sharper, more sudden deceleration when the throttle is...

Re: Improving OEM heated grips possible?

It seems that the heated grips on the cam heads don't get as hot as on the non-cam heads - can't understand why BMW would do that but more people are finding this to be so. On the older R1200R I could only comfortably use the second setting for a brief time - with the new bike it needs to be on the ...

Re: Help with r12r low throttle response issue

What revs are you using when you suffer this problem? I've owned a 2006 R1200R and now have a 2012 R1200R and compared to the previous models (particularly the 1100 engines) I found both to be vastly better as regards surging at low speeds, but you do have to change down to a gear that allows the en...

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

And you have numbers to back up your assumption about failed ABS units? With BMW being worse than any other make? Seriously though, I'm not a BMW fan boy, but making generalizations based on forum posts or "friends had problem" is rather presumptuous. Secondly, "luck of the draw"...

Re: Final Drive Update/Question

The FD on my 1100 went down around 52,000 miles. The BMW dealer's head technician who changed the bearings did re-shim saying effectively, that he considered that it had not been done properly during manufacture. He didn't put it across to me like that at the time, of cause. I think that it was alon...

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

I can understand why those who, for the present, are fortunate enough to still have a working ABS system on their BMW motorcycle and want to play down the chances of a potential huge expense in the near future. They probably realise that reports are already out there to those in the market for a use...

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

I'm not "anti ABS" - I'm anti shelling out a big chunk of dosh again when it goes wrong. I think you can call it "Once bitten - Twice shy". I have reliable ABS on all my other vehicles and I would very much like a new R1200R with reliable ABS - but I'm a realist and BMW doesn't a...

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

as a follow up-- braking without the abs is fantastic-- i'm not sure the average rider would even notice it was out. You're right - the brakes have increased "feel" since the ABS failed, although I do miss the linked braking using only the front brake lever. I've been trying to do a deal ...

That's why you need the BMW screen and handguards - they're made to fit those bars - no hassle.

Re: 1996 R1100R Bleed Rear Brake question.

Not sure why you want to remove the caliper - seems more likely that the nipple has seized or is corroded. If the brake fluid is a dark colour then it would seem that it's been some time since the nipple was in use. I would try replacing it with a new bleed nipple first - hopefully it's a simple fix.

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

The ABS has failed recently on my September 2006 R1200R. When taken to the BMW dealer, their diagnostics say that the unit has failed - £1200 +. The bike had covered 36,000 miles and had the brake fluid changed every year without fail. I have a R1100R bought new in 1999 where the ABS still works aft...
