Re: Went for a ride today . . .
Great to see you are still enjoying the bike and doing the regular rides. I've been getting out on mine as well, and I am slowly building the miles to encompass some decent distances. I enjoy reading your comments about the ST, and have few complaints about the S. I had figured that the seat and bar...

Re: New r1150r rider brake smell?
If you have sticking brakes or are riding the (usually rear) brake(s), then the easy test is to feel if a caliper is hot after you stop. They tend not to 'smell' for very long as they are out there in the breeze. It is a possibility with a low-mile 04 bike. Brake pistons or slides tend to stick when...

Re: New F800GT
MIXR, So, does your F800S make you feel fearless and invincible in the sharp/fast corners? Not as much as my old Roadster did. Or even the big GSA for that matter. Funny thing was that I was talked into taking the S for a ride. I expected it to be uncomfortable and 'tippy' into the corners, much li...

Re: New F800GT
Reading write-ups in On-Line M/C mag websites they said "The F800ST did not sell well, but is very popular with it's owners". Yes, it is, and it will take a pretty remarkable newer BMW for me to trade-it-in. I had that same feeling for most of the 8 years I owned the R1150R, only with the...

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner
The crush washer makes them stick. Swap the ratchet for a fixed bar and give it a good 'tap' with a hammer to break it free. Try and hold the socket down on the head as you do it or the socket might slip and burr the head. Protect the telelever arms with some slit tube from a mountain bike (bicycle)...

Re: Non-ABS Rockster?
Ditched the Rockster. The one I was looking at was a bit rough around the edges. Looked like it had been down hard on the right side at some stage, and had signs of having work done on the swing-arm and final drive. Maybe prang damage? Anyway, I took the opportunity to test ride a few other machines...

Optional locking cap. Chrome I think, for the R1200C, but fits all oilheads. It's also on the GS parts breakdown!

Re: Oil Fill Cap
It's a plastic insert that pops out from the top. You can prise it out carefully, but risk damaging the lip if not careful. Most people just wait for the next valve adjustment and push it out from inside the cover when the cover is off. Depends on how bad the leak is I suppose. See items 5 and 6. ht...

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner
I have a 2004 Rockster with 34-odd thousand miles on it. Is there a typical lifespan or likely fail mileage for this part? Do you hear a cam chain clatter coming from the left side cylinder when you first start up cold? Or when decelerating down a hill? Or when pulling up at the lights when it's re...

Re: Cam Chain Tensioner
Ditto on my R1150R which is the same as the Rock. TB stayed in place. The GS has a thicker telelever arm and the TB has to be moved out of the way. Looks good Steven. Glad you got it sorted. I like the cleats you used too. Good choice. Much better match on the case than my metal ones. Cheers, Mick.

Re: system case mounting question
Perfect choice. I saw them and was worried that both sides had the shaped edge. You need the flat side to secure the foot and stop it from slipping out. Being marine grade material, they will be strong and UV resistant. Size looks good as well. You can ignore all my 'measure it' references as you wi...

Re: system case mounting question
Steven - Measure carefully. I couldn't find the ones you might be thinking of using on that site. Most fairleads have additional toothed cams etc? The slotted ones are quite large. They are also quite thick in the base, and generally for narrow ropes, so the sides are close-together. Make sure they ...

Re: front rotors
Braking, EBC, Lucas, Brembo, ABM, Spiegler come into my mind. Check out the big bay for this. What do you mean by "can the old rotors be cut"? Cut into pieces? Cut off from the wheel? Brgds Oliver Pretty sure (100%) this is a reference to skimming the rotors, or machining them back to a s...

Re: system case mounting question
Steven - About 130,000 kilometres worth of 'stable' on my R and another 30,000 on my GSA! Dirt roads, big loads, used as a tie-down point for seat luggage. It's done the rounds and hasn't broken, moved or come loose. The bags are not taking real loads at that foot. The foot just stops the bag from s...

Re: system case mounting question
Mine are surplus from some past history in military aviation. However, you will find them at specialist fastener shops, and also get stainless steel ones like these at marine fitting shops. If you really get stuck, please PM me with your name and address details and I'll send you a pair. I still hav...

Re: R1150r not accelerating when clutch is engaged
Migtech - Please note that the choke you refer to is actually just a fast idle lever. It doesn't richen the mixture like a normal butterfly choke would. That should not have an effect on your problem. Cheers.

Re: Clutch Sticks
Probably a slave, but not 100% guaranteed. We've just done one on a 2001 R1150R. Rear caliper and wheel out of the way, drop the shock out and tape the little shock mudflap out of the way as well. You can get to the three bolts with a 1/4 drive and wobble joint, or even just a set of ball-joint hex ...

Re: how much work with 11 years of storage?
You really need to provide more details on 'how' it was stored. If it was ridden into a shed and then parked, then there will be a very different set of requirements to a bike that was actually 'prepared' for long-term storage. A full fuel tank (with fuel that should now be drained and dumped) will ...

Re: Non-ABS Rockster?
Didn't get there. Got bogged down pulling apart the old Roadster to access the busted driveshaft, then had a mate from work turn up to fix a split water line out the back. Gotta love winter in Canberra. Leave a cup of water in an evaporative cooler line and it freezes and splits the copper pipe! I l...
