Re: Brake Fluid
Far from avoiding the chore of bleeding the brakes, you should bleed them (a little) to get just the (little bit of) water out very frequently! (Every day would not be too often.) Or risk having no brakes when you need them... Bleeding your brakes every day or more frequently than recommended is un...

Why don't we just run tubes and forget the tires?

Re: bike no start no more
Charge the battery and have it load tested. The boxer engine's starter places high demands on the battery. If the battery is not in top shape, you'll have difficulty. If the battery checks OK, I would remove the starter and clean the helix/shaft and lube it lightly. Also, some BMW starters have been...

Re: "$20 Stupid Tax for all tires showing cords"
Sorry, I have to say this, but police monitoring motorcycle tire tread depth is just one more step toward the nanny state. Darwin takes care of most problems of this nature. Problem is when one of the Darwinian candidates driving with bald tyres kills a member of your family (or any other innocent ...

MAX BMW has an online parts fische with pricing. They do a large internet parts business. Also, try Beemer Boneyard.

Re: Final Drive Update/Question
FD failures occur almost randomly. Some Paralever owners who perform their own FD oil changes have been able to predict an impending FD failure. Inspection of the smut on the magnetic drain plug often provides a good assessment of the condition of the FD internals. A failure usually comes as a resul...

Re: 6K Service Disappointment
Took the bike in for the 6K service interval. Got the bike back with the oil overfilled (site glass completely full), clock was off by two hours, front tire over inflated by 4 lbs, rear under by 3 lbs. I'm going to drain the oil down to the correct visual, then recheck after a good warmup ride. Am...

Re: 6K Service Disappointment
Remember, here in the US, the owner can perform all service on his/her BMW without voiding the warranty. Document all work with photos and notes, preserve receipts for parts and/or consumables used during the service and don't be afraid to ask the dealer or members here or at other sites about a pro...

Re: front rotors
Regarding "cutting the rotors", I assume you mean to machine or grind the rotors to remove the worn friction surface. Given the rotor design, this would require Blanchard grinding which would remove material at the ears used to attach the rotor to the wheel and therefore possibly weakening...

Next purchase - a Service Manual and whatever else i need. Try this http://www.jimvonbaden.com/ A good place to start. IMHO well worth the $25. You'll be better off going to the BMW GS specific site where there are routine discussions regarding older GS models like the R1100GS, R1150GS, etc.

Re: front rotors
Does anyone know of a aftermarket brake rotor dealer? Bmw wants about $300 each and I hope to do better. I have a 1996 r850r non/abs front spoked tire and would like to replace them both.(102,000 miles) Can the old rotors be cut? Thanks Since you're in NY, contact these folks. They are very helpful...

Re: Brake Fluid
Not to confuse the issue but some later model motorcycles use mineral oil for the hydraulic clutch systems....don't mix it up...know what grade fluid goes where on your motorcycle, auto, tractor or whatever.

Is the alternator charging the battery? Are all the battery connections clean and secure? Is the battery itself in good shape? Have it load tested.

It won't be long before those pipes are blue and gold again. Jet Hot ceramic coating will keep them from corroding and they'll always look good and never turn color.

Re: how much work with 11 years of storage?
Change all fluids before even attempting to start the engine, operate the clutch or operate/squeeze the brake levers. Drain and clean the fuel tank. I would remove the fuel pump from the tank and change the fuel filter and hoses inside the tank. Remember, the in tank hoses must be SAE 30R10 rated. A...
