Re: About battery crap
For one, they were designed specifically for our bike - apparently, anyway, given that it seems to be the only battery that fits without having to Do Something. So it's a new design. And new designs, even on things which we're supposed to understand very well, often have problems. Correct me if I'm...

Re: Battery Tender thru fuse box
In a word, yes. I've disconnected the bike's wiring from the Powerlet connector and connected that to an unswitched circuit in my fuse box, which is powered from the battery. Then I made an adapter cable from my Optimate charger to a male Powerlet connector. When I need to use the charger, I plug it...

Don,
I can only speculate on the details of the algorithm. But it will be interesting to see if the trend continues on your friend's battery--and whether it correctly predicts a premature battery failure.

Re: BMW Navigation IV on an R1200R
I have had 2 different GPS's on my R12R and both indicate 5 mph slower then factory speedo at around 65 mph. I just figure the factory speedo is indicating 5 mph faster to keep you safely under the limit? Or maybe trying to convince you of a faster top end speed than is true?? I've always wondered ...

Harald,
You might be a good candidate for a Battery Bug. http://www.argusanalyzers.com/index.php?id=32. I'm probably going to get one, but it's a winter project for me and it sounds like you may have a more immediate need.

Battery Bug?
Check out http://www.argusanalyzers.com/index.php?id=32 Given the uncommonly high rate of battery failures on our bikes, it seems like it might be a worthwhile addition: 1. It predicts battery death. Might keep you from being stuck out in the boonies. 2. It warns of an undercharge condition and tell...

Re: Intermitent power loss
My understanding is when the EWS is bad, the gauges cycle normally, but when you hit the starter button, the display reads "EWS."
This sounds more like a bad key switch.

Re: Turbulence * breakthrough? * screens may not be at fault!
Using the short stock flyshield there is no turbulence on mine either, just clean air. Have you tried removing it completely? I didn't realize how much turbulence the flyscreen was causing until I ran without it. But regardless, if there's no turbulence either with the flyscreen or with no screen a...

Re: Effect of Autocom and Garmin SatNav on Battery
The technician seems to think the power drain should return to zero when the system is fully shut down. Well, almost zero. You still need a bit of power to run the clock and keep some of the computer's memory circuits alive. Going directly to the battery on the ground only might be a problem. It's ...

Re: The R1200R as a first bike.
Well said, Celeste. I also tell my students the most important factors in choosing a first bike are 1) the fit and 2) whether it's suited for the kind of riding they think they want to do. And I emphasize that they're buying their first bike, not (necessarily) their last bike.

Re: Effect of Autocom and Garmin SatNav on Battery
Are you sure that you're not being confused by the way the bike shuts down? I did some current measurements last spring when I was doing some electrical mods, and found the following: 1. Ignition on, engine off, 2.5 amps. 2. Ignition off, drops quickly to 0.6 amps. 3. A few seconds later, drops to 0...

Re: Pilot Road 2's - Odd tire wear..
What are the differences between the Pilot Road and the Pilot Road 2? If you prefer one over the other, why? PR2s are dual-compound tires. They use a harder compound in the center of the tread and a softer compound off-center. This, in theory anyhow, gives better cornering traction, less "squa...

Re: Tire pressure sensor question
This would seem to be an argument for the sensors that replace the valve caps. Aside from the obvious temptation to thieves, is there any downside to that type? BTW, I just bought a set of tires for my Mazda6, and the shop asked me to sign a waiver saying they're not responsible for damage to intern...

Re: Windshields
I recently put the BMW sport windscreen on after not having anything. After a trip up to and around northern VT without anything, my neck was really sore from dealing with the head-on wind. After I put the sport screen on, the buffeting increased some (around my arms and shoulders), but my neck was...

Sears has a reputation to make the customer happy. That hasn't been true since the merger with K-Mart. I had a complaint about a year ago about something that, I thought, wore out too quickly, and they refused to make an adjustment. I asked the manager, "Whatever happened to 'Satisafction guar...

+1 for Rain-X. Just turn your head and the water runs right off the shield.
I can't speak for all brands, but I've asked Shoei about this. They say they've tested Rain-X on their shields and do not see any problems.

Re: back ache and bar risers
Yes. I installed the SW Motech bar risers and, like you, thought the brake line was just a little too short. I got a replacement from Spiegler. All I said was "BMW R1200R, 1 1/2" longer than stock." They knew all the details. Around $60.

Re: Rear Seal Leak
Any seal can fail at any time, I disagree. Seal failure on a motorcycle less than two years old is unacceptable. Well, you accepted it on a '70s Triumph, but not on any modern bike. Ever see a 2-year-old Toyota with an oil leak? I think Japanese engineers kill themselves when that happens. ;-) I do...

Re: Tank Rattle?
It's hard to talk about noises on the internet, of course, but I had a similar noise after I had the recall work done for the front brakes. The fuel lines to the tank pass through a couple of plastic clamps to prevent them from vibrating against the tank, and the idiot (long story) who worked on my ...

Re: About battery crap
I can't imagine that there is any fundamental defect in our batteries. I mean there are really only a handful of battery manufacturers in the world, and battery manufacturing is definitely not a black art. I'm sure that BMW doesn't say to Exide, "Cut the corners on these batteries to the point ...
