I'm guilty of this - only once. We have no charcoal canisters here so the overflow becomes the garage floor. Fuel is getting too expensive to waste. 8-[

Re: Correct tappets= Nirvana

Setting all the valve clearances precisely is well worth the time. Your bike will love you if it is followed by a throttle synchronization procedure.

Re: Regarding the top box and your passenger

I had an R1150GS with a top box that protruded a bit too far into the passenger's space. It was a nuisance to my wife so I engineered a small frame to move it back a bit. If you don't have access to this type of activity, perhaps another top box is in order. I agree with others; remove the CCP to he...

Re: After 7 yrs I finally did it.

I remember seeing that years ago linked to a post at the AdvRider site... . Rob, this is very likely the same place where I saw the link. It's your reference to aircraft that makes me think it is so. If I ever chose to design one, I would incorporate a way of closing the venturi so that I could tur...

Re: After 7 yrs I finally did it.

I searched around (see previous post) for a thread on this topic but can't locate it. It worked something like this diagram. I have only included the return line to the tank and omitted things like strainers, pumps etc. The design involves a venturi on the return line. The venturi draws the leftover...

Re: After 7 yrs I finally did it.

Some time ago I read a short description of how the fuel pickup could be modified to collect from both sides of the tank. The concept was simple and a small part of the fuel line in the tank had to be shaped/welded. The design would suit all bikes that have a tank that straddles the frame and only h...

Re: Awful noise from transmisson (I think)

Many of the Boxer transmissions do make some noise - mine included. It is the rattling of the gears within the transmission caused by gear lash. If that is the problem then the typical beahviour is this: 1. There will be no noise when the transmission is cold and the oil is thick. 2. It will only ma...

Re: BMW pride!

BMW seems to want to play it cool and remain part of the elite scene. They are very protective of their logo.

I have only two patches on my jacket: BMW and Norton. I ride BMW now and started my riding on Nortons. They mean something only to me and most people wouldn't even notice them.

Re: Weak headlight=weak battery

If your battery is over three years old it owes you nothing so don't feel too bad about replacing it.
If the "state of battery charge" is poor you will often see your headlight brightness increase as you rev the engine.
Beware... batteries can die very quicky.

Re: Wiggle at 70 mph

The first thing is to set the tyre pressures correctly. This is an easy thing to do. Then.... take the advice of Riceburner and try some different preload settings. This will change the rake angle and amount of trail. The resulting change in geometry could solve the problem completely if it is like ...

Re: heat wrap for exhaust

I would be uncomfortable with keeping the exhaust gas hotter than necessary. There are a few reasons: I'm not sure but I would think that it could cause premature failure of the the system and risk a fire by sending the heat further down the pipe. The next thing is that the volumetrics of a good exh...

Re: Awful noise from transmisson (I think)

You're assuming that the damage is related to your mis-shift; it may be unrelated but it's likely that it is. It's unlikely that it's a spline failure if you can clearly hear it on one side of the bike. My concern is the knocking. This kind of hints a broken gear tooth. I hope I'm wrong but it could...

Great idea to first diagnose. Shelling out whatever £s for the stick coil will hurt a lot less if it fixes the problem.

1. If your bike was truly so bad, your dealer's conscience would have prevented him from even making any offer at all.
2. Lower the pegs.
3. Enjoy the bike.

Re: Close encounter with a deer...

I have great concern about hitting a deer. We have very few of them here (Australia) and those that exist are descended from farmed animals that have escaped and gone feral. I have hit a kangaroo and that is bad enough. The roo's centre of gravity is low due to the mass of the body being close the g...

I forget ot mention that the stick coils I replaced last week cost me (AUS)$401for the pair. Ouch! It made a huge difference to starting and smoothness.
