Re: Rocky Mountains here I come...but I need advice
Take the lighter jacket. Colorado can be hot during the summer. I just rode up to Creede and Lake City, then back down through Alamosa and Taos and it was very mild. The jacket feels great in the mornings, but by 10 I was in a long sleeve tee shirt.

A defensive mentality while riding
I started thinking about accidents and close calls, and it occurs to me that there might be some great recollections (and some bad ones) out there. A number of times I have had a close call while riding a motorcycle and am thankful that I have never been in a serious accident. It sure has made me a ...

Re: Knobbys on an RT
Well, I checked and it seems that I have Pilot Road 2's on my rt. This has sure been a useful education for me! I think I shall put a new set of PR3 tires on.

Re: 04 rt
On another post I just mentioned buying a brand new '04 R1150rt back in 2004. It has to be the best bike of the 15 or so I have ever owned. I rode it for 2 years, put 60,000 miles on it, and never had a squeak of a problem. Sadly, I sold it. Needed the money for a... well, that is best not spoken of...

Re: daytime running lights
Noone has responded to this thread, so I thought I should! I walked into the Santa Fe BMW dealer in 2004 to pick up a tire for my riding buddy. I rode a Harley Softtail at the time, but when I saw that new RT, I could not help myself... especially since it was BLACK, which to me is the right color f...

Re: Sound of a BMW R1150R
Returning home from Alaska one time, we found ourselves on an interstate (a rare occurance) at night going through Salt Lake, trying to make time. It was perhaps the most dangerous and scary ride of my life... could not easily see Doug ahead of me with all the lights and road markers for constructio...

Re: Sound of a BMW R1150R
I was at MVD a few weeks ago registering my R1150rt and one of the MVD fellows who looked at my vin number made the comment "Nice bike, but not nearly loud enough". I was a bit surprised, especially because the thing that I have always appreciated about BMW's, and what drew me to them in t...

I have spent quite a lot of time in Mexico, and so I agree with you that it is beautiful. Where do you live? Maybe I can drop by for a visit sometime. By the way, I currently have Michelins on my RT with about 5,000 on them... they will do for a while. Lee Davis

Forgive me, but I am confused. I guess it is the lack of a christian upbringing. What is an RDC? and, for that matter, a TPM, or an ASC? I am on the QT here... I need to know ASAP, the VP of my OSC is PO'd because my VIP card was not OK'd. This is FUBAR! Lee

Re: Knobbys on an RT
Dakar on an RT? Do you mean that is not practical? Of course, I would draw the line at that, but I have never been one to flinch at an adventure simply because of the bike I happen to ride. After all, I was off on a summer adventure in 1971, to do the Mackenzie river by canoe. I was in New Mexico an...

Michael... As one of the posters on that thread about the exhaust valve failure, I completely agree with you! The amount of information and expertise out there is amazing. I had never thought about the fuel mix being a culprit in an exhaust valve breaking, and so I learned a lot from that thread... ...

Re: Knobbys on an RT
Thanks for all the great info. I am uneducated in the range of tires out there in the modern world, so this is good for me. I like the looks of the Pirelli Scorpion MT90/AT dual sport tires. They are called 70/30 and that seems just about right for me. Even remind me of the tread on the Dunlop K70's...

Knobbys on an RT
I think my next long distance trip will be to Mexico. I tend to stay off the toll roads completely and ride the main highways only if there is no alternative. It is much more fun to ride the smaller roads, although these tend to all be paved. Occasionally though the dirt roads beckon or just happen,...

Re: rain pants?
Rain pants with built in feet don't exist. It is a safety thing... many rain suits are used as foul weather gear for marine use, and if you go into the water, the pants would fill with water, acting as an anchor. I bought a light jacket and pants in California on the way north one time (2002), and t...

"Worth keeping an eye on Ebay - there are usually a few for sale there, sometimes low mileage recent examples." I have bought about 85 antique cars and motorcycles over the past dozen years and recently have turned to Craigslist for a bike purchase. I wanted a R1150RT, and ebay was very l...

Re: Exhaust valve blowed up
That is an extremely rare occurance, (a valve 'exploding') for ANY engine. Most likely it was a defect in the manufacturing of the valve, or less likely a defect in the guide.. I operated a VW and Porsche engine remanufacturing business for 8 years and we would see engines that had 'dropped a valve'...

"Cassiar way more the way it used to be. Awesome." I sure second that! Having done both the Alaska highway and the Cassiar, I would do the Cassiar again without hesitation. In one 100 mile stretch we saw 11 bears. Also, there is a sea cruise involved... A ferry over to Vancouver Island, up...

Re: Alaska on a 1150R
A few more thoughts... The Alaska Highway is pavement the entire way, with many gas stations and restaurants along the way, sometimes every 20-50 miles. There is no need to carry extra containers of gas, ever. Now, rain is often an issue. I did the first 350 miles after Whitehorse in a hard constant...

Re: Alaska on a 1150R
Alaska is no problem, unless you ride a sporster, and then you should fill up at every place you see. I did the Cassiar highway with a buddy that was riding a Honda Shadow (150 mile tops), and we made it without incident. The Alaska Highway is much more populated and has gas everywhere. Lee Davis
