Ignition Switch Problem
Maxine, after sitting for a good part of the rainy season here in Costa Rica, has developed an odd problem. When the key is turned to the ON position, there is a small part that seems a bit too far and the "dash" lights go out and the starter will not engage. Turning the key back slightly ...

Re: Oil Change question
Thanks all for the input and relating your experiences.... I think the change coming up after a short trip next week will be using dino oil and monitor the consumption. The rainy season here is now over and Maxine will see more activity on recently repaved roads. No potholes to dodge.

Re: Oil Change question
Hi Mrclubike, Maxine has 28,000 miles now. I seem to be using about 2 1/2 quarts every 6000, maybe more. Seems high to me. It has been that way since purchasing the bike about 7 years ago with only 5400 miles. The bike came to me using only synthetic. I did the first 6000 mile service at my local de...

Oil Change question
Two question about oil in our bikes: 1. I am about 2000 miles from my next scheduled oil change, but well over one year. The old rubric says to change the oil in gasoline combustion engines after XXXX miles or once per year. Does that still apply to the synthectic oils? I do live in a climate where ...

Re: Final drive bearings
I recently discovered a nearly imperceptable bit of play in my rear wheel. A couple of suggestions from some members sent me on a research frenzy where I found these very interesting pieces of information. I bought a couple of standard tools to make the adjustment to the pivot bearing and if that ad...

Used ABS pump unit
I recently did a servoectomy on my R1150R, Maxine, and have a left over ABS module sitting on my workbench. I thought I recall reading somewhere on this forum about someone who rebuilds the units. This one is free to anyone who wants to pay the shipping to their location. I don't plan to rebuild it,...

Re: Downsizing Tires
Thank you all for the input. I have the Dunlop D609's on the rear now and took a 50 mile loop to scrub them in before putting my wife on the back for our trip. I can feel virtually no difference between the 170 and the 160. But then I am no longer scrapping pegs in my riding habits so I was not conc...

Re: Downsizing Tires
Thanks Kirby and Towerworker. I will try the 160's. I have found a website for Shinko Costa Rica, but, not able to find a dealer that will order the tires in that size. They are not exactly customer focused here, but, the benefits outweigh the problems. The tire I am replacing is a Shinko and the re...

Downsizing Tires
Maxine (2004 R1150R) is in need of some new footwear. Living in Costa Rica, my access to tires is... well not easy. I am looking for a street/gravel compromise tire. I have priced the Michelin Anakee 3 at the San Jose dealer and came away with serious sticker shock. Over $300 for the rear tire and t...

Shock Absorber Rebuild
I just wanted to pass on an experience I had not too long ago, in case you find yourself in a similar situation. Living with a 2004 R1150R comes with it's own set of unique problems. Living with it in Costa Rica is simply another level of that. I had a leaky front shock absorber a few months back. C...

Re: Oil Change Thoughts
Just browsing today and ran across this post. My "two cents" for what it's worth. For the other "old" guys out there..... buy a mechanics shop stool on wheels for your back problem and keep your oil in the house the night before changing it if the weather is cold. Another solutio...

Starter Problem
I am writing this after the problem has been resolved so if someone else has a similar problem they avoid having it get worse as they diagnose the issue. I got a lot of guidance from previous posts as I worked my way through the problem. Had I not gone through the process step by step I may have sav...

Re: Brake Bleeding Process
OK! Final report: Thanks to the helpful people on this forum, I had the information needed to properly diagnose the problem and removing the servo seemed to be the only solution. Had I convenient access to a dealership I would have gone in to have it plugged in for a diagnosis and saved a lot of tim...

Re: Brake Bleeding Process
Well, flushing the system with new fluid did not solve the problem. Front ABS work and back do not. It looks like a servoectomy is in Maxine's future. One question about that. I have seen two different options on the forum for connecting the electricals. One is to use the harness intact from the ser...

Re: Brake Bleeding Process
So the most recent episode of the blinking brake warning light saga is this. I cleaned the calipers, pulled the slide pins and polished them with a drill and some fine sandpaper. Pistons seem to be working fine and moving in and out without trouble. The charger was on for several hours and went thro...

Re: Brake Bleeding Process
Thanks All! These links and information will help me throught this process. I always get anxious doing any procedure for the first time and tend to get very OCD about it....especially working on a BMW. A friend here in Costa Rica has told me his older Kawasaki has had frozen calipers several times o...

Brake Bleeding Process
I am currently living in Costa Rica with Maxine, my 2004 R1150R. Before leaving I had the brakes flushed. that was less than a year ago. However, I now live in the rainforest and it is very damp most of the past 6 months. The ABS warning lights started flashing on a short ride the other day and the ...

Re: Start Procedure after battery disconnect
This is just a follow-up to my original question. Thanks again for the input. I turned on the ignition, left the kill switch in the position that allows the bike to start :) and turned the throttle twice through its full range. Then took Maxine out for her first Costa Rican run of about 80KM. Early ...
