Re: K1200R or S
I had a K1200S for a couple years; just sold it a month ago. It's a very impressive bit of engineering. At highway speeds, the airflow is very smooth and if you like the forward sport-bike type seating position it is very comfortable. The power is of course amazing and with the long wheelbase it see...

Re: Beating a dead horse! R vs. RT
I did have an R1200GS a few years ago. On a lot of the fire roads and trails up in the foothills there is a lot of sand that is the size and shape of BBs. The 1200GS was just a bear in that stuff and I dumped it several times. On the 650GS, though, it is no problem. I guess there's an example where ...

Beating a dead horse! R vs. RT
Greetings everyone...yes, this has been discussed but I'd still appreciate anyone's input. Yes, I've also reviewed the prior posts on this topic. Out here in Wyoming, with frequent rides into the Rocky Mountains and highway speeds of 85-90 mph just to keep up with traffic, I just can't shake the fee...

It looks great. I've been thinking about getting one as well but as you say the carbon fiber ones are crazy expensive. Thanks!

Re: Trip Chicago to Denver
I've done Chicago to Denver dozens of times, with most routes you can think of. No matter how you slice it, going through Kansas or Nebraska isn't fun. This is not a knock on those states (I lived in Kansas for 5 years), but until you hit the Front Range it's all pretty much the same...

Re: Is R1150R a good re-entry bike?
I'm taking the MSR course this week, license Friday. The 2003 R1150R that I looked at sold last week, so I will be taking a look at the new R1200R. When I asked what changed with the R1200R, the dealer replied "they only make them better." He says it's lighter, narrower and 40 more HP - a...

Re: RT Vs. R
Oh, and to ChiTown: 1. I've read your posts on Advrider. You're an inspiration. I wouldn't even take my F650GS some of the places you've taken your R. 2. Your R is beautiful with the white deflector and no bags 3. I get really worried about scraping a cylinder in the twisties in the canyons in Color...

Re: RT Vs. R
Per BMW's website: The R1200R has a dry weight of 437 pounds with 4.6 gallon tank; the RT is 505 pounds with 7.1 gallon tank. Figure the extra fuel adds 18 or so pounds, and the total weight difference is about 86 pounds. That's not all that much. Heck, I had a K1200LT a few years back, and that was...

Re: RT Vs. R
Since the R1200RT came out in 2005, I assume you meant that and not a late-model R1150RT. Anyway, that's good to hear because as much as I like my R1200R, I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't have gotten an RT instead. Don't get me wrong, the R is a great bike, but when you add the hard bags, top case,...

Re: Lost My Muffler
The R1200# series bikes continually adjust the mixture based on the two O2 sensors - one for each cylinder, and the knock sensors - one for each cylinder. There are no alternate programs available for the BMW bikes AFAIK. Awesome. Looks like a little experimenting is in order. Thanks for the answer.

Re: Lost My Muffler
Just curious - in the Harley world, when you put on a different muffler, you have to pay the dealer to reprogram the engine control unit (for FI bikes), because the change in backpressure throws off the fuel mixture needed (or something like that). Do the BMW ECUs automatically adjust for removing o...

Re: r12r purchase
An R1200RT with all the goodies (heated seats/grips, ASC, standard ABS, and so on) and without either a radio or radio prep, and without top case, will sticker out at right around $19,500 including the dealer charge ... that's quite a difference. I know; just priced one on the BMW website the other ...

Re: Should I?...Should I really? But I've always owned Harleys.
I'm going to jump in - my "credentials" are that I've had 4 Harleys (Sportster, V-rod, Softail Deluxe, and Electra-Glide) and 5 BMWs (K1200S, R1200R, F650GS, R1200GS). Currently have the R1200R and F650GS. I've also had Ducatis, Kawasakis, Suzukis, but that's another story. Note, for start...

Re: Ceramic Coated Header Winter Project Complete
I really like the ceramic coating. That said, when I first started with BMWs, I thought it was refreshing that they *didn't* have chromed exhaust. Kind of sets them apart from the Harley "butt-jewelry" crowd and makes them look more like a serious machine than a bling-ey fashion statement....

The BMW system cases for the R1200R are excellent. But, they're so FAT that I think the bike looks ridiculous from the rear. Here we have this sleek awesome roadster and from the rear it looks like you've got an 800-pounder's buttcheeks on your bike. Yeah, I'll use them when riding any long distance...
