Re: Cross Country Routes

Need a little more information on your expectations. Where are you starting from, do you want to visit New England, Key West, south, north, west coast Pacific Highway, etc. I've been back and forth across the country many times both car and motorcycle starting in 1972. Do you want to stay off the In...

Re: Newbie - Thinking about getting an R1150R

In my humble opinion the R1150R looks better but let me clarify that: The R1150R has a funky look to it with that beak, the analog instruments, the idiot lights, and the bulgy scoops on the tank. To me the R1200R looks cheesy. But that is just looks and you don't see the bike when you are riding it....

Re: the real pros of an R1150R?

My only quibble against the R1200R is the smaller gas tank compared to the R1150R. That and about $12k dollars of course... I think that the R1150R looks better, but who cares about that? This summer I turned over 100K miles on my 2004 R and I still enjoy riding it. I still have the stock BMW seat (...

Re: turning a roadster into a RT

Jim - My own '04 R1150RA has 97k miles on it. Those miles include three trips to Alaska, three cross-country trips, and a two-up week long camping trip with my daughter on the back. The short AK trip was two-up with my son. I have BMW heated grips, and a Sargent passenger seat. I also have the BMW t...

Re: Windshield Brace Bolt Stripped

Second the suggestion by R1150Rclean to use a longer bolt. Same thing happened to me (also on the right rear) and that's what I did at the suggestion of the parts guy at the dealer. I believe that the new bolt is 5mm longer than stock. It is difficult enough to wiggle the stock length bolt in there,...

Re: 2004 vs 2005/2006 R1150R

Did BMW drop the power ABS in 2005 or did it stay on until the R1200? I bought my '04 R1150R specifically because I wanted ABS, but the power assisted ABS on my bike is overly sensitive and grabby. BMW saw the light and quietly reverted to a non power assisted system on later models. After 96k miles...

Re: R1150R How Long Will It Last?

"I would think that the owner's common sense will kick in long before his wallet fails." If we all had common sense we'd be driving Honda Civics instead of BMW motorcycles. What happens is that I become attached to a bike. it doesn't make sense to spend $2000 on your old cat for vet bills,...

Re: another victim-clutch splines; beyond disappointed

OK, friends, this is not the discussion I want to read two days before I leave on a 7k trip on my '04 R with 85k. (I've followed all the spline threads for a couple of years and I understand that it's a small percentage that fail.) The original poster mentioned that he'd go back to a Japanese bike i...

Re: 200k mile club?

86k miles on my '04 R1150RA, purchased new in December, 2003. I take a long trip every summer and commute 50 miles a day when the weather cooperates, which is most of the time in the San Francisco Bay Area. Normal maintenance performed by the dealer and both stick coils replaced at 60k miles. One ne...

Re: Considering R1150R - newbie questions

My 2004 (purchased in December of 2003) R1150RA just turned over 85k miles. It's been across the country from CA to West Virginia, to Alaska twice, twice up the Ice Fields Parkway and around British Columbia, and is used year 'round as a daily commuter. No issues except a failed stick coil at 60k mi...

Re: Cee Baileys Windshields

I don't how you can use the sport shield that much. I have the sport shield on now, I installed it when it was 106 here and I thought the airflow might feel good. Last night I was enjoying the cool air, but realised I was getting severe buffeting from surrounding traffic on the freeway. it bats my ...

Re: Cee Baileys Windshields

This doesn't answer your query, but I believe that the windscreen height is usually measured from the top of the headlight cutout to the top of the screen. I don't remember the height of the screen on my bike, and it is at home, so I can't measure the screen height and tell you what it is. I went th...

Re: Shad top case using Shad mount

Thanks for the replies. If I go the top box route, I'll look into those Givi struts. My old laptop in its padded case did not fit in the BMW system case, but my new laptop is a Dell 620 with a Dell case and I haven't tested it yet. I'd hoped to avoid using the system cases on my commute since I live...

Shad top case using Shad mount

The corporate jackals where I work have decreed that I must take my laptop home with me every night, so I'm in need of a top case for secure transport of said computer. A quick search of the forum reveals that several members have and are happy with the Shad top case in various sizes. However, fixin...

Lots of discussion on this and other forums re the BMW touring and sports screens. I had the touring screen on my '04 R1150R and it is somewhat noisy, but I don't get the buffeting that many complain about. I'm 5' 9" and have a short torso. I used the touring screen on two trips from CA to Alas...

Re: Advice for a possible new owner

I find the rider's seat OK, but the passenger seat (according to my skinny son) is uncomfortable for any distance over 25 miles. I purchased the BMW Comfort passenger seat, and he said it was only a slight improvement. The Sargent seat was much more to his liking - no more compaints. Peter '73 R75/5...
