Re: Recalls, Do I have to?

Valid points, and I didn’t think about the insurance angle. How many final drives failed prematurely because of flange replacement is a number that will never be known. I consider the final drive to not be one of the more robust components on this bike. It’s certainly possible to get a bit too overz...

Recalls, Do I have to?

I have 2 recalls on my ’07 R1200R. One is for the fuel pump and the other is for the rear flange. A few years ago when I first heard about the fuel pump recall I pulled the tank and saw a few cracks in the pump flange. There was no recall yet so I made a clamp to go around the flange and forgot abou...

Re: Battery Test

I think you could also disconnect the fuel pump using the connector under the seat if you didn't want to mess with the injectors. My current battery has always seemed on the sluggish side and never cranked the engine over very well. (Deka ETX14). But its done this for 6 years now and has never faile...

Re: Front wheel bearing

I've haven't had to replace the bearings yet but wouldn't hesitate to use something other than OEM with a couple of cautions: 1. Buy one from a bearing distributor and not from one of the internet sites. Counterfeit bearings are not uncommon. Someone makes a poor quality bearing and marks it with a ...

Re: Front Brake Reservoir Gunk

I've never seen anything like that before with brake fluid. I agree a thorough flush is in order. It will be interesting to see what flushes out and hopefully none of that white gunk will have migrated thru the system. Did the brakes seem to work OK before you started your brake line project? I noti...

Re: Head Lamp cracked-Alternatives?

Yes, they're around $300 with the tax now. Max BMW has them for $276.

It looks like there was a design change in 2015. When this was no longer a regular production item the price probably went up.

Re: Head Lamp cracked-Alternatives?

I've also been hoping someone had some input on this. Mine ('07 R1200R) has been cracked for a long time. I couldn't justify the $300 dealer price so I put a very thin film of clear silicone over the crack to keep water out. It works but the crack is kind of ugly. On mine I never remember hitting an...

Re: Third fuel strip in 600 miles

The fuel strip I have now works (sort of) so I doubt I could file anything with NHTSA. It stays on full or near full for most of the tank and then falls off like a rock. Kind of like gas gauges in older GM cars. I'm ignorant of the law but the cynical side of me has to wonder why BMW offered the ext...

Re: Third fuel strip in 600 miles

All manufacturer's have their problems but BMW does seem to have more than their fair share. In BMW's defense, when you're designing new things and introducing new technology there are occasional issues that come up in production. As an engineer I know that despite your best efforts to prove out a c...

Re: Driveshaft

Thanks for the link to Ted Porter's driveshafts. I didn't know there were alternatives available. A unit that can be rebuilt and relubed periodically for 35% less than the factory part is very attractive. I bought my Wilbers from Porter's and found him to be a great guy to deal with. It's too bad th...

Re: Final Drive Oil - Change Frequency

I'm not sure what you mean by milkshake colored but when lower units on outboard motors get a little water in them (which isn't uncommon) they appear brown in color. So if you're talking about chocolate milkshakes maybe it is water. If you still have the used oil put it in a glass jar for a few days...

Re: Final Drive Play (Sorry guys)

My bike is an 07 and the rear wheel play feels exactly as you describe. The spec is 1mm measured on the rim near the bead of the tire. I've never attached a dial indicator to measure what it actually is. Given the geometry the actual play inside the bearing is far less than you feel at the wheel. A ...

Re: Going to look at a 2007 R12R today

I think you're right and there is something going on with the throttle cable. On my '07 there's a solid casting in that area with no physical way to even route the cable like that. Also, maybe it's just the photo but the bars look like they have more rise than the stock ones. Take a browse thru the ...

Re: Rear Drive Fluid

I've always used Mobil Delvac 75W90 in the rear drive and trans. I figure if it's good enough for the high loading and shock loads of trucks and off road equipment it's good enough for me. It's also not a LS oil which is something I didn't want in the rear drive.

Re: R12 Vacuum testing

If it were me and the bike is idling and running fine and it required minimal adjustment to balance the TB's I guess I wouldn't be overly concerned with a potential vacuum leak. I don't know how far off zero is normal for the Trims on the R12 but it would seem as though the AF-xied is a variable thr...

Re: R12 Vacuum testing

John, Have you tried to hook a vacuum gage up to see if the vacuum is abnormal or varies from side to side? This would at least verify if you have a leak or not. I'm not sure what the LTFT should read with an AF-xied. I've had one installed for a while but don't have a GS-911 to check. Have you mess...

Re: Brake Bite

The owners manual for my '07 says it has organic pads on the rear. The bike has integral braking with ABS. If you change to a sintered pad on the rear which will give more grab/bite aren't you changing the front to rear brake bias that's designed into the system? I'm not sure I'd want to do that. An...

Re: New Member

Thanks for the advice on the 1 - 2 shift. I'll give that a try. I do notice that it's much smoother when shifting aggressively or when first starting out (thicker oil). Regarding the on - off throttle feel, it's really only noticeable when going down hill thru tight turns. Under these conditions I f...

Re: Additional Lighting for '11 R1200R

I agree that the headlight modulator is probably the best thing going for conspicuity. It really grabs your attention. It's unfortunate it confuses so many people. Most of it's harmless except for the people that flash their lights back at you. They think you're flashing your lights and accusing the...

Hi All, First post from a new member. I live about 10 miles northwest of Greenville, SC and do most of my riding in the southern Appalachians. I bought the bike a couple of years ago because I wanted something light and nimble that kept me in an upright seating position. This bike was just the ticke...
