Re: Snap crackle and POP!

Following this with interest. I have a 2004 that doesn't do this, but earlier this year I was working for several months in CA and was loaned a 2002 model for a couple of months, and that bike did that. I interpreted it as a combustion thing, it happened only sometimes, and didn't seem to really aff...

Re: What's a m/c forum without another dumb oil question???

Never thought I would contribute to another oil thread, but... I've used synthetics, syn-blends, and dino oil in boxers ranging from true airheads to the oilers. Changing the oil is so easy (and reasonably priced using the natural stuff) that I have pretty well gone back to fossil fuel oil. One reas...

Re: Oil Change Thoughts

There's some good ideas posed here, I found a funnel with an "offset" reservoir (it was one with a removeable flexible snout (which I removed)). The funnel, because of the offset, will stand reliably on it's own in the oil fill hole, which makes it possible to have both hands free for the ...

Re: Advice please! On 2004 R1150R

Well, the bases have been pretty well covered, but here's my $.02. I've been riding Boxers (mainly) since the early 90s, starting with an R90/6. I've had four oil-heads (3 R1100 s and one R1150R (current)) and about eight boxers total. Once you "get" the mechanical scheme (which really did...

Re: non-ABS instrument cluster replaced w/ABS - brake lights ON

I can't offer specific help, but I've been looking into removing the ABS system from my '04. Reading online articles and watching youtube videos, several people have remarked about some wiring change necessary to prevent the ABS system from reading failure or non-setting of ABS after removal. You ma...

Re: Bike Value and Upgrades

A while back I saw a company selling new "knock-off" cases on eBay and/or Amazon for about $225 each. They were Chinese, identical in appearance to the BMW side cases (no BMW rondel on them though). Had good reviews, haven't looked lately. I ride an '04 R1150R; I was able to use racks and ...

Re: Pillion seat latch is stuck!

I was going to suggest exactly what the previous posters recommended. I have a Sargent (front only) in conjunction with a "Rockster rear panel" and it's stiff sometimes (moreso than the stock setup)

Re: Windshield Bracket Removal Impossible?

I solved this problem by ditching the factory windshield and mounts altogether and getting a "tall" Parabellum setup. The factory touring screen dumped the wind load directly into my chest and face (I'm slightly over 6'3" tall) and just didn't work. The Parabellum shield uses it's own...

Re: Brake Fluid Change

There's some good input in the other posts; I just went through the process for the first time. I bought the funnel setup from Beemer Boneyard and got a friend who is a professional mechanic to help me, it's not that hard but with the funnel you really need three hands. The funnel setup could easily...

Maybe it would be worth trying the website for some of the "major" BMW dealers like Max's, or A&S in Sacramento, maybe BMW Motorrrad or Blue Moon.

Re: Costa Rica Maintenance Suggestions

Just for fun I googled "Costa Rica BMW motorcycle service". There's some BMW rentals and a dealership in San Jose, CR. There were some other listings which I didn't really examine, but it might be worth calling the dealer there and seeing how they act.

Re: 1150r very red muffler !

A friend of mine had that happen on his 1150 GS; it turned out to be that he inadvertently left his enrichener ("choke") on; he told me it took about 15 minutes for the Cat to turn red.

Re: How to make my system cases look new again

I've been using spray-on bedliner for a number of things; it costs about the same as spray paint, it can be used on a variety of surfaces, and just a quick spray over will repair the bedliner itself, should it get marred or scraped. Sam's Club (that's a wally world kind of for wholesale, for you &qu...

Re: Hand Guards

I bought a set of generic ones online for my '04; they were not long enough to install; fortunately they were cheap. Bought the "best" set at Cycle Gear, supposedly on sale at 1/2 price (about $45). They mounted up fairly well, seem to be well built and durable. Did have to remove the Thro...

Re: Replacement Battery

I shopped around for a battery, the best deal was one at Beemer Boneyard for under $100. Since I've done quite a bit of business there, and the CCA rating of their battery was "way up there" and have been helped by them at times; I trust their judgment. So, for me, it's Beemer Boneyard.

Re: Tire Time

Like many of you guys, I've been riding since BMW's tires came with tubes. I was a puro cheapskate for a long long time; but now safety and "sureness of foot" are more important. I went to the Michelin Pilot Roads and really like them. They feel good on the road, do well under all conditio...

The original post almost certainly indicates a typo in the manual since 12K miles equals almost 20k Kilomenters, not 10K.

Re: RIP ABS 2002 R1150R

"Torsen" asked about "how-to" for the ABS system elimination. I just finished bleeding the ABS on my 2004 R1150R; I had to buy a special funnel (also bought a DVD explaining the procedure) from Beemer Boneyard. I was looking around on Youtube, and found a number of videos posted ...

Re: How to handle onramp traffic while riding in the right l

Like most real world "situations", there is no single "right way". Rather, you have to have "it all" in your bag of tricks. Sometimes simply accelerating will do it, sometimes going one lane over to the left will work, and sometimes you might have to slow down to let so...

Re: When is it time to practice taking a passenger in an emp

I'd say take your time and get better at riding solo before attempting to take a passenger. Passengers change the dynamics of riding drastically; your bike goes from being a flick of the wrist dancer to a lumbering beast. Center of gravity, balance, acceleration and braking are all greatly changed. ...
