Re: Overheating?

I too have experienced overheating of my prior r1150rt on that damned section of highway from Buffalo to Toronto (the traffic in the summer is almost always terrible in the summer), and hell yes the valves get noisy when they hit the top of the register. Pulled over, let it cool off and all was good...

Head Lamp cracked-Alternatives?

Looking for best, most cost effective alternative for replacing front cracked headlight housing/lense. I see several aftermarket ones on ebay for $126-130. What has your experience been?

Re: Can I bang on the starter?

I had a similar situation with my friend's r1150r that I service for him. The bike had 35K on it at the time. a.) I made sure the battery was fully charged and in good shape b.) I then cleaned the power wire connection to the starter with fine sand paper c.) I found the starter mounting bolts loose ...

Re: Tire Time

I have used Shinkos on several bikes targeted for spruce and resale, but haven't personally put a lot of distance riding on them. That said, I recommended a budget conscious buddy of mine this week to try either a set of their 005 Advance or 009 Raven tires as the price was rocking good (half as muc...

Re: Harley advantages over BMW, any?

I buy, sell, ride and trade approx. 25 bikes a year. I've never been too brand specific but can honestly say more weird s&%t has gone wrong with my Harleys than most other brands. Most expensive to fix too and not the most enjoyable to ride compared to some others, being more primitive than I li...

Re: Riding below freezing: do-able or suicidal...?

As I mentioned above, it is totally personal preference whether to ride your bike in the winter, and especially in road salt. As far as safety, as long as you are certain there is no snow or ice on the road or in the forecast, you should be OK. For me, I try to avoid it on my own, but do work on man...

Re: Riding below freezing: do-able or suicidal...?

Well, here are my thoughts; if it is cold enough for there to be any ice on the roads, the bike stays in the garage. I live in NE Ohio (USA) and the issue here in the winter isn't just the cold and ice, but road salt. Once the salt is on the road, the bike stays garaged until the spring rains. Road ...

Re: Won't Start/Reserve

I am betting the issue is fuel related. First, how old is the gas that was in the tank? If old and 10% ethanol, it may have experienced phase separation, lowering it's combustibility and ability to fire off. I would add a gallon of fresh fuel, make sure the battery is fully charged and try it again....

Re: New Owner / Repainted my Rockster

I like that look way better, even better than a rockster in bone stock paint. I am probably going to repaint my black tiger stripe someday (I think the mat black is a weak finish and futt bugly as well). Unfortunately, having copper colored rims makes the color change a little more expensive and com...

Re: New Servo-ectomy

To Wandering Rider: I kind of figured that the tone ring on the front or rear controlled the Speedo via the ABS sensors. Glad I didn't pull them! No biggie. I can live with that and explain, if necessary to any future owner, my rationale for gutting the system. I also agree that the servo assist fro...

Re: Rockster Paint Issues (Input Requested)

LOL! While I generally agree with the "patina" comment, the anal retentive OCD German heritage in me sometimes has a hard time letting go of trying to make things perfect. In reality, I've found that owning a "less than perfect" car, truck, house, appliance, etc. actually produce...

Rockster Paint Issues (Input Requested)

O.K., another old story I am sure. My black and orange Rockster has some paint issues. 1.) First, I think the factory satin/mat black paint on the tank and side covers is much softer and easier to scratch than a good quality gloss paint, and consequently mine has a few minor tank scratches on both t...

Re: New Servo-ectomy

Re empty space where the servo pump was : there is a bit of excess space under the tank now for sure, but considering the need to pull the tank to effectively access it, I'm not sure what good it would do to move the battery forward to use the battery space for something else. I am kind of excited ...

And I am all about shell Rotella conventional (but Delo & Delvac are OK too) 15/40 at $12.95 a gallon and a good Wix or AC Delco filter. I change every 5K religiously so high mile syn. would buy me little. I also have never needed to use a torque wrench on drain plugs or oil filters. I have pret...

Re: New Servo-ectomy

Well, I felt the quick connects did serve a purpose, so I decided to retain them. If you don't have them, removing the fuel tank will involve fuel spill unless you do something like use hemostats or fuel line clamping pliers. I felt it was worth it to retain and upgrade them. Now that evap. canister...

Re: New Servo-ectomy

Hey Eric. Thanks for the shout out. I agree. In that number I spent easily (6) hours beforehand researching the process for my specific model to avoid needing to cut anything unnecessarily-I retained the ABS/Servor controller, and getting a read on various opinions and perspectives from those who ha...

Re: New Servo-ectomy

Update: I played with the Rockster again tonight. There must have been just a tiny amount of air left in the front brake system that resolved on its own, as it is now as as tight as can be and with no free play in the hand lever at all. I encourage you to not be afraid to do this operation. It's eas...

New Servo-ectomy

Greetings, Eric here. I am the new owner of a pretty nice 2004 Rockster Tiger Stripe (Black and Orange) with 28,000 miles. I got a nice deal by buying the bike as-is with (among a few other niggles) a failed ABS/Servo system. Symptoms: minimal (residual) braking on the rear brakes, brake warning lig...
