speedometer cable

Recently I had a clutch cable "snap" as I was riding that required a new one to be installed! Well...because my bike is 18 years I decided to change all the cables as a precaution! I ride a 1996 r850r with 107,000 miles on the clock. The speedometer needs to be disconnected at the front wh...

Re: transmission problem

As I rode around the circle 4 times thinking what to do I decided to head homeward and made it to the fi...

Re: transmission problem

Thank you omg1010 for your advice and link to lirgiadar.com. I will take a wait and see approch before I do anything. I do have a question if you don't mind. What do you mean about the shifter being stuck? Stuck how ? The reason I'm interested is this spring I raised my shift lever all the way up to...

transmission problem

Here goes....1996 r850r with 106,000 miles on the clock. Never had a problem until now. My bike somehow shifts itself out of first gear and into neutral while I'm waiting at a light. Other times I'm going slow with the bike in first gear (coasting) with the clutch pulled in waiting for the green lig...

Re: Shocks

Captaincable Sounds like a plan. I goggled "motorcycle shock rebuilders" and was surprised to see there were a few. The rates seemed resonable but I have no idea about the quality of their work. Just curious....Why do you think you need new shocks? Any handlings issues or suspension proble...

Re: Shocks

Thanks everyone for all your replys to my question. Ebay still looks like a good option but so does rebuilding and aftermarket parts.
All good suggestions, I just need to figure which way to go!
Thanks again!

Shocks

Why are shocks for a bike so *amn expensive? I have a 1996 r850r BMW with a 104,000 miles and would like to "replace" them but wow they are $600 to $700 each. Are they gold plated? I have bought used shocks on ebay in the past, that worked ok but you really have to place your trust in the ...

Re: front rotors

Just back from vacation at the outer banks in NC. Computer free for 3 weeks so I did not have a chance to view the replys to my question. Thank you all for your info...rotors are on my "to do list". Probally will look for aftermarket parts but will first measure rotor thickness first Thank...

front rotors

Does anyone know of a aftermarket brake rotor dealer? Bmw wants about $300 each and I hope to do better. I have a 1996 r850r non/abs front spoked tire and would like to replace them both.(102,000 miles) Can the old rotors be cut? Thanks

Re: rear wheel play R850R

The job went real smooth...the hardest part was getting the courage up to "take it apart". The help on this site is first rate!

The r850r is a awesome machine...not the fastest.....not the coolest...but absolutaly a solid bike. Too bad they were only imported here for two years!

Re: rear wheel play R850R

Good news...no metal shaving in the rear drive! Yippeee I removed the final drive housing and discoverd that the needle bearing on the right side are shot. The left side is fine but I will replace both of them. The roller bearings are worn so they will also be replaced also. The pivot pins are good ...

rear wheel play R850R

It's rare I get my wife out on the bike but today was one of those days. She is a light weight so it's almost like riding alone. Now ...my question! I noticed right off that my bike was not handling as usual. I thought maybe I needed air in my rear tire so I checked the pressure and all was good. I ...
