The answer is neither. Following the instructions in the factory service manual dvd, I removed the side cover, the side panel and snorkle ("air pipe" in BMW-speak) and, with a little persuasion, removed and replaced the filter.

Anybody who says that the bike they just bought is the last bike they will ever buy is kidding themselves. Or maybe their SOs.

Methinks a little heat from a blow dryer will soften the adhesive enough to peel it off. Exactly right. A little slow application of warm air from a hair dryer will soften the letters and/or stripes. Then I used my thumb nail to peel them off and a little Goo Gone to remove any residual stickiness....
