Re: Crash Bars or Cylinder Guards?

I can relate to Owldaddy's advice - depends on your riding style and the type of guards - be aware that cornering clearance may be reduced. I have the black plastic OEM guards that probably wouldn't stand much more than a static/slow drop. These hug the cylinder heads quite tightly, but I have still...

Re: Leaking gas....

B12b - I recently had the beemer boneyard disconnects fitted which solved the leaking disconnect problem, however I also had a loose fuel hose clamp from the tank (the original OEM crimp clamps) which I discovered after the new disconnects were fitted! The leak was always worst on start up. Good to ...

Re: uneven tyre wear

I and my friends in New Zealand have had very similar experiences - our roads here have chip seal which is fairly aggressive and a good road camber when riding the back roads. The combination wears out the nearside front rather than the middle of the tyre and we've had more problems with the dual co...

Re: 1150rt oil consumption/useage

Mine only has 53,000km on it so can't comment on 100K plus, but I was getting through half a sight glass over approx 1,800km. Interesting thing is that I was using full synthetic (Shell) from when I purchased the bike at 38,000 on the clock. Over the last year I've switched to dyno oil and interesti...

Re: Any harm in keeping the cat while changing the pipe?

My cat and standard pipe were replaced with a Remus Y-pipe and carbon can by a previous owner. I didn't like the noise/look and put the standard can back on with the Y-pipe. Has run great over the last two years and no probs with the panniers, albeit NZ summers may not be as hot as elsewhere in the ...

Re: Exporting to New Zealand

Hi John I'm based in Wellington NZ and my R1150R was an import from Japan. I'm unaware of any issues with respect to getting certification for the brakes - If you get paperwork to import the bike (over a certain number of years there'd be no tax) you'd just need to get the registration once over her...

Re: Fuel Leak - Injector?

Thanks Boxermania, will check for any seepage from that area as well. The dealer used the BMW fuel clamps and crimping tool i.e. no screws, but can't see any seepage from these at the connectors. I've cleaned all areas/pipes and throttle bodies so they are now spotless and will re-check when I get o...

Re: Fuel Leak - Injector?

Thanks Boxermania - if I can't detect any leakage around the injector and the problem recurs I might change the o-rings you have pointed out as part of the process of elimination. Fingers crossed, and thanks for the feedback.

Fuel Leak - Injector?

I have had a minor fuel leak over time on the quick disconnect side of the bike and so upgraded to the metal beemer boneyard disconnects and had these fitted at BMW Motorad with the proper crimps etc after a big ride over Christmas. All has been good on the long rides I have done since, however when...

Re: engine oil

No problem, My 2002 ran on dino for the first few years :p and I switched to synthetic at 40,000km, but because my bike still has a thirst for oil I've switched back to dino. Now at 50,000km and running great!

Re: Battery Tender

Thanks for the feedback folks, I'll definitely look to get a socket/pigtail sorted so that I can keep the battery topped up. Bob (rdsmith3) - winter here in Wellington isn't that bad at all (typically 8-10 Celsius) however we do get some rather strong southerlies that whip up some pretty foul weathe...

Battery Tender

Hi Folks - I'm sure this has been covered before but I'm having trouble finding it through a search of the forums! Having just finished replacing my battery I'm wondering about the merits of using a battery tender over the winter months when my bike stands for up to a month at a time without use. Mi...

Re: Diagram of Cable Ties?

Only thing to watch out for if you cut the ties (and don't replace them - like me :) ) is that the cables don't catch on the horn cable.....I found out once the horn cables severed. Easy fix was to loosen and rotate the horn to avoid the clash.

Re: 5th gear is this odd?

Following on from Airman's comment, I think some RRs must have different gearing....mine's a 2002 and at 60mph (100kph here in NZ) in 6th I'm running at 3500rpm....fine for me as the legal limit in NZ is 100kph which means it's pretty responsive for relaxed overtaking. #-o

Re: After market Exhust Weight

My '02 RR came with a Remus Y-pipe and carbon fibre can. The carbon can was a fraction of the weight of the stock can, however looks weren't in keeping with the bike and while the bike revved freely and ran well at high rpm it was very noisy and a bit lumpy around 3,000rpm. I've kept the y-pipe but ...

Re: Oil filler cap problem

I had exactly the same thing happen to mine with an aftermarket plug. I managed to wiggle/pull the whole plug and sleeve assembly out without taking the valve cover off. The insert is only held in with an o-ring and tab insert to stop it rotating. I popped the same assembly back in and when I remove...

I must try that...40mins doesn't sound half bad. Out of interest, did you replace the valve cover gaskets, or just re-use the existing (the scottish half of me is hoping that the latter will suffice)? :)
