Warm start issue
Not sure if something is starting to develop here or not, so I'd thought I'd put it out here for discussion. The bike: '04 R twin spark, original owner, bought new in March of '03, now showing 62,000 miles. Only problems to date have been broken/leaky fuel QD's, a minor bit of FD seepage around the ...

Have you tried different underwear?
Seriously, if you're wearing boxers on your Boxer, I can understand your, uhm, predicament. Try switching to something snugger, like bicycle shorts, or compression shorts, like those offered by UnderArmour.

+1 on the advice to get a reliable road service - I also have KOA Campground's RV Roadhelp, which uses Allstate Motor Club to provide roadside services - and +1 on keeping BMWMOA's Anonymous Book handy. Re: Six years; 72,000 miles
Congrats, John! She looks good, real good. I'm coming right up behind you, at 6 years, 3 months and 61k miles on the clock. I get a lot of positive comments when people find out the age and miles on mine. I've had about the same issues as you, and, like you, wouldn't mind adding another to the stabl...

Re: r1150r questions
That's not a "lot" of miles - mine's an '04 also, and I've got 61k miles on it. 'Course I ride the snot out of it. And to answer your question, if it's been properly maintained, you shouldn't hesitate to just get on it and ride off into the sunset. I know I'm not afraid to take trips.

Re: Something to worry about?
But is there some correlation between using synthetic FD oil, and FD failure? If you read his series of articles on this subject in the BMW Owners News, he (Glaves) advises against using 75w-140 specifically. He feels that this weight is just too thick for the final drive. It's not so much the dino...

Re: Metzeler ME880 Wear
Jeepers, Phil, 21 months on the same tires? How you do that? I go thru a rear every 9 months. ME880's got me the best mileage of any that I've tried (about 9k on the rear), and with 60k miles on the clock, I've tried 'em all. Just so you know, judging by that pict, that rear is gonna go away a lot q...

Chicago BMW called me after I placed my order on-line to tell me they had to order them (good customer service, eh?) . I had them in my hands exactly nine days after ordering.duckdave wrote:That does it!

Sometimes you guys know more than the BMW techs ...
Several months ago I posted looking for advice when my R starting idling erratically. A number of you responded with the advice to replace the coil sticks. (If you don't know what they are, pull the spark plug wire off the plug; see that 5 inch or so plastic thingie that serves as a "boot"...

Same windscreen or am I losing it, again?!?!? Well, you are losing it, Steve, but not because of my picts - that is a different fairing. I took the Givi off last summer, thinking I'd get more cooling air flow for the summer, and I just never got around to putting it back on. Good catch!

Re: Need help on extending brake and shifter levers
You need one (or two) of these: http://www.sierrabmwonline.com/ilium-works-large-shift-lever-pedal-p-828.html I've had one on my shift lever and one on my brake pedal almost since I brought the bike home six years ago. I wouldn't ride a BMW without one on each side, and I don't even have size 12's !...

Re: So the left side of my bike and my left shin are...
Final question: what's the best way to clean an Aerostich that has been saturated with motor oil? I've been dunking the leg in hot water with lots of dish soap (excellent degreasers in there) and scrubbing it with a hand brush, but it still leaves an oily residue on my hand. Going to go buy some Da...

Re: So the left side of my bike and my left shin are...
Hi Sparky, I had the same thing happen one time after adjusting my valves. If you had the valves set, the dealer would have had to take off the valve cover. When reinstalling the cover it's really easy to have the rubber seal (that goes around the spark plug hole) move out of position during reasse...

I thought Ohlins wasn't making shocks for our 1150R's any more. The US web site doesn't list them, says something about "unavailable" IIRC. Works Performance does have shocks listed.

Good tip, Mark. Wish I had thought of something like that last spring when I found out that tightening the Autloite secondary plug with vice grips (couldn't find a workable socket to fit) resulted in this: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b385/RapidRobert/Various/stuff011.jpg Pretty nasty, eh? Drilling and fitting a pin works, no doubt, but there's an easier solution that requires NO drilling, and thus no weakening of plastic and metal parts:

Rob & Al and others, Thanks for your thoughts. I've seen you ride and your style is not conducive to burnt valves. Thanks (I guess!), Al, but as usual, there is more to this than that. In the interest of brevity I left out some pertinent facts. Here is, as they say, the rest of the story: Back i...
