Re: BMW Motorcycle Reliability Quality Support Failure

Hi Don,

For the record, my fuel strip was replaced under warranty in 2007 and has worked fine ever since. These gauges work perfectly well in most of the world. It's not BMW's fault that Americans put corn in their gasoline.

Cheers, Tom

Re: Fall in Vermont

Hello Steve, Is that last shot Rte 100 near Warren? I think I recognized the old marble works in Middlebury in the earlier shot? I had the same Rizomas on my Monster. Rock steady image...I could tell if the white sedan behind me was a harmless Nissan Altima or the dreaded Crown Victoria. On another ...

Re: Booster Plug

All these claims will show up on a dyno run. If it revs faster, you will see it. If the power curve is smoother, you will see it. If it makes more power, lower in the rev band, you will see it. So, why not do a before and after dyno run, and publish the results? If it shows an improvement, im certa...

Re: Hold onto your air (well, air and oil) cooled boxers

"...even firing and balance are all good engine qualities of a motorcycle engine." Yes, I agree with most of your post. I would point out though that the boxer configuration is in no way necessary for "even firing." A typical parallel twin has the same firing interval as our bike...

Re: Ducati Monster vs R1200R

In a nutshell, the Monster is a naked sport bike, and the R12R is a naked touring bike. According to Motorcycle Consumer News, which weighs the bikes they test, the BMW is 150 pounds heavier, and it feels it. I've ridden both bikes all day with comfort, but the BM is more of a serious vehicle, the D...

Re: Hold onto your air (well, air and oil) cooled boxers

Why would I want to "hold on" to my air/oil cooled boxer when something better is on the way? I don't ride BMW for a nostalgia trip. I ride it for cutting-edge engineering solutions that enhance my riding experience. The flat-twin layout is a nice retro touch and enhances the character of ...

Re: Aftermarket parts, Warranty & Dealer

OK, so I rode from Virginia to Vermont today (it's theme ride: I'm hoping to make a tour of all the states that begin with "V") and got 46MPG for the trip, according to the Bord Computer. That's about what I'd expect without the boosterplug for 80 mph, 3 hard case bags loaded to the brim, ...

Re: 2011 R1200R with ESA?

I like ESA. COMF is only appropriate for the interstate, but it's fun to click a button a few times and then take a nice off-ramp in SPORT. I used to ride around in NORM most of the time until I bought my Ducati. Now I use SPORT unless the road is really bad...It still feels like a Gold Wing in comp...

Re: Aftermarket parts, Warranty & Dealer

This thread persuaded me to buy a BoosterPlug. I installed it today and went to test the bike before I leave for New England tomorrow. I was tempted to report "bupkis", since for most of the ride I felt absolutely no difference. Through town, traffic lights, country roads...bupkis. MAYBE t...

Re: US-211 - GREAT Road!

The biggest problem with Skyline is the 35 mph posted limit. You'll want to ride 60 to have fun, and I've been stopped twice by the rangers. If you go on weekends in the summer, forget it. One illegal double-yellow-line pass after another, or you languish behind Winnebagi. 211, on the other hand, is...

Re: What seat are you using on your R1200R

Rick Mayer. Poor workmanship from the outset, and not aging gracefully. Comfortable enough, and of course I can't see the foam coming out of place under the vinyl when I'm sitting on it. I'll put up with it until I can't stand it anymore, then toss it. Anything is preferable to having to deal with R...

Re: but if you DO want full-time ASC...

I did this upgrade to my bike. On startup, the yellow ASC icon on the dash should flash just like the ABS icon until you ride a short distance. When the ABS wheel speed sensor is validated, both lights go out. When the ASC intervenes, it flashes the yellow icon on the instrument panel. The icon flas...

Re: Buy 2011 Bonneville SE and keep the R1200R

I bought a Ducati Monster 1100 last fall. It's an engine with a seat and suspension bolted to it, about 125# lighter than the R1200R according to Motorcycle Consumer News (don't believe the published weights from the manufacturers.) The Bonnies are nice, and I thought I wanted a Thruxton until I saw...
