Re: Tire Time
I totally agree with the Pirelli's. I bought a 2011 R1200RT in 011 and have put 69k miles on it. (now it's for sale, too old, bad back, girlfriend unable to ride, etc etc) Anyway, tried all the popular brands, the best of them got 12k miles. The Pirelli Angels have done 15k twice, and handle as good...

Re: dry, cracked fuel lines
Just an FYI about fuel lines in general. I installed the brass quick disconnects and a small auto type inline fuel filter after going thru the battle to access the in tank filter. Now I can change filters in 2 minutes with a flat blade screwdriver without having to disassemble anything. I've got a w...

Re: Brighter headlight option(s)
Quite some time I ago installed a rather simple Eastern Beaver headlight relay kit, # H-4. It still shows up on their website. Basically you tap power directly off the battery thru a fuse and a relay to the headlite. The relay is controlled with the stock headlight switch and uses the stock switch w...

Flashing LED brake tail lights, gizmo???
Hi, been a long time. I'm dusting off my 1150R and have forgotten a few things. I have one of those LED flashing brake tail lights, but it won't work now. Fuse is OK, there's power to the disconnected stock harness in the light housing, but the lights don't come on. There's no power to the spade lug...

Re: short, but COLD commute gear
Being originally from central MN I couldn't agree more with a simple snowmobile suit! Protects the whole body incl arms and legs. I'm currently in area where they don't know what that is, and I outgrew my snowmobile suit years ago. I wouldn't have believed it, but in the Mojave Desert 50 miles SW of...

Re: Tire wear
Over the past 50k miles or so I've tried lots of different ones. Best service was the Metz Z6 Interact, but unfortunately I can't find those any more. I'm not Kenny Roberts but I do enjoy an exhilirating corner on occasion and my throttle doesn't stick from non-use :-) Got nearly 12k out of those. N...

Re: short, but COLD commute gear
I tried leather chaps but WAY too bulky. I had my wife make some leggings for me. I ride down into the upper 20's for 40 miles ea way to work. Not cold in the pm, but darn sure cold at 4:30 am! When it's that cold, I usually start out with either flannel lined jeans or thermal drawers, neither very ...

Helmet Windbreak, Rev 1
There's always room for improvement, especially on a prototype / first attempt! You may remember the photos in the original post. The "windbreak" stuck out quite a ways and was pretty obvious. But it did work. Below is Rev 1. Doesn't stick out quite so far, is a little less obtrusive, work...

Re: Dobeck Techlusion
"pot stylel" pretty well describes the way he was making his techlusions or whatever those gadgets were. He tried a prototype on my 1200 but didn't have the right connector plugs. The little board he had made (with the pots on it) fit into a 12 ga shotgun shell casing (!). If I understood ...

Re: Some other cold weather ideas
All good ideas that I'm sure work! I don't have a leather jacket so that is why I thought about those welder sleeves - worn on the outside of the jacket just as a wind blocker. The jackets I do have don't have a loose enough collar to stuff in multiple layers of scarves or anything - tried that with...

Some other cold weather ideas
I work on large construction projects, mostly power plants, and so see lots of specialty cold weather gear. One thing I picked up is like a thin, close fitting ski mask that just has an opening for the eyes, and nose if you want to pull the bottom of the opening down a little. Only thing it could be...

Re: Helmet wind break
Hmmm, never heard of or seen those "neck rolls" - sounds like a great idea, esp on long rides when my neck gets tired holding my head up against the wind! I'll have to check into that. It's currently 1220AM and just had to ride 40 miles in to work (welding inspection for nite shift on the ...

Re: Helmet wind break
Tried to add comments to the photos in Photobucket but couldn't get them to post, will try again later. Keep in mind that airflow over all helmets won't be the same, so experiment a little. Just hold one finger near the base of the front of the helmet, then move your finger away and feel the differe...

Dobeck Techlusion
Am working SW of Vegas for a couple years, go into Henderson (SE edge of Vegas area) for groceries etc. Stopped for a quick sandwich, an older gentlemen came up to me and asked if that was my BMW outside. Turns out it was Mike Dobeck himself!! He invited me to his home shop, what a setup! Oscillosco...

Re: Modifications to your bike
Not too many cosmetic mods, but - barbacks for my bad back, great addition swapped footpegs/mount plates/shifter linkage/brake pedal & links for stuff off a GS - lowered the pegs AND moved them forward about 2" - great on my bad knees! Not a "perfect" mod when all done, but would ...

Re: ABS servo filling tool
Hey, that's a great low buck solution! I got the one from Beemer Boneyard and altho a bunch more than that one, was still cheaper than the BMW one if I remember. Another little tip, first time to loosen the bleeder screws on the ABS unit, use a 6 point socket. Mine were gosh-awful tight! An open end...

Helmet wind break
Now this is BRAND new :-) I have found a cheap, simple way to keep the airflow from following down the face shield curve and end up hitting me right at the nape (?) of the neck - when it's 50 or colder, that gets miserable in short order, no matter how tall of a collar on my jacket. Discovered it wh...

Re: OEM system side cases for my naked bike.
I got tired of things falling out of the side cases when I opened them, so true to my nature of being a tinkerer and of the "it ain't right till it's right" outlook, here's what I did http://s719.photobucket.com/user/macx351/slideshow/R1200RT/System%20case%20top%20loading%20inserts Now don...
