Re: disassemble and removal of turn signal

I'll post a brief reply, but can add more if necessary. In short, so long as you are not removing the "stalk" of the turn signal, but only the lens housing, then you only need to remove: the lens cover, the bulb (gently push and turn), and then the screws holding the clamp/bracket near whe...

Re: you've got a great bike!

Y'all need to check your antifreeze. It's getting cold. No Kidding Mr. Towerworker, it is getting real cold in Northern Japan too. I have until November 15th or 1st Snow to ride my bike. Working for Uncle Sam, I must follow the rules. How are doing, sir? I think that I saw a RR from you earlier thi...

Re: Now.....finally......it's over!

Good grief, it's November already. Thanksgiving is a couple of weeks away and then the rush to the end of the year. Certainly is getting cold in VA. We're expecting a light snow this evening in DC. Speaking of, I am hoping to get some more riding in this year, but some have forecast a cold and snowy...

Re: which windscreen is this?

Sure wish I could find the finishing washers for that screen. One of them came off my bike and I can't find replacements anywhere. Anybody know who sells them? I tried the BMW dealer in Raleigh and they couldn't help. If it is a BMW windscreen, then try looking it up on the parts fische available o...

Re: New to BMW - Need Advice

Yes, that is normal, even if mildly irritating (if you are one who prefers to keep your bike clean). They are easily replaced and I've seen some (through Wunderlich) that are colored (red, blue, etc.) and may not rust. Things to look for: make sure that the zip ties have been cut/removed from the wi...

Re: 2004 R1150R Clutch replacement in NY

While I agree that a clutch is a part that gets worn, you can visually inspect items like tires and brake pads. I doubt that the shop (the seller) would have opened up the bike (pre-purchase) for you to inspect the clutch, so it seems that, at the least, the honorable thing to do would be to split t...

Re: 2004 R1150R Clutch replacement in NY

That's not from a BMW dealer service shop. The quote was from an independent shop that specializes in BMWs. Of course, that was almost two years ago, but $2,600 is a big jump.

Re: 2004 R1150R Clutch replacement in NY

I'm of no help for your location, but I strongly recommend going with the Siebenrock or new BMW clutch plate (that copies the Siebenrock). They are dry plates, but don't fail or wear poorly if they get wet. That's what I used when I had to replace my clutch plate. In the DC area, it can run $600-800...

Re: buying R1150R - 20,000 service question from a newbie

Sounds like a great deal. I've seen similar bikes (age, mileage, & build) sell for more. Add in the extras and you've got a great deal. No idea what the 20k service is. Perhaps it's a late 18k service. Typical service schedule should be every 3k miles - basically an oil and final drive fluid cha...

Re: Newbie ?'s

Final drive... the dreaded topic. I've heard different things from different people. Yes, if they fail, it is relatively expensive to replace or repair. Good maintenance and checking on the fd can prevent a major failure and major expense. That said, I'm not sure if the rate of failure for the 1150s...

Re: Newbie ?'s

Ah, changing from the thumper to the boxer. I owned the 650 Dakar years ago. Great bike; lots of fun. However, space became an issue (couldn't keep two bikes) and the 1150 just offered a better ride for around town, countryside twisties, and even an occasional basic fire trail. Plus, they're great f...

Re: Newbie ?'s

Some riders/owners prefer the double-spark over the single-spark engines of the 1150s. I don't know what year that change occurred (2002 or 2003, I think). It's easy to determine what a bike is (i.e., single or double) by looking at the valve covers. However, I'd suggest finding a bike that's been w...

Re: Owner Manual R1150R

I do not know why you want the owner manual; however, the booklets that come with the bike are extremely simplistic. You could easily create your own owner's maintenance book. If you are looking for a guide on repairs, the Clymer manual is a very good book. You may be able to find one on eBay, but t...

Re: Access battery terminals

Nice looking bike! And welcome to the forum. I wouldn't recommend trying to access the battery terminals without removing the tank. As you are planning to add a power-let, I presume that you aren't afraid of wrenching. Removal of the tank is really quite simple and doesn't take long. Helpful hints a...

Changing our the rear with a new PR3 was the tire change from hell. ... Hardest exchange I've ever done. Re: Speed-shifting

There are reviews of the R1150R (articles can be found on line) that mention that these bikes CAN be shifted in this manner (clutch-less). However, as others here will attest, repeated practice of this is likely to shorten the lifespan of parts that are expensive to replace. #-o Elsewhere on this si...

Re: Pilot road 3's installed

Got the PR3s. Of course, one week later and I see that Metzler Z8/Z6 sets are on sale locally for $199. Quite happy with the PR3s, but I'm wondering about picking up the Metzlers and storing them. Anyone here have thoughts on the Metzlers vs. PR2s or PR3s?
