Re: Cutting a key Blank
I haven't found a single locksmith who will cut steel BMW key blanks. They say it dulls their cutters and they just won't do it.

Re: My Clutch Slave Misadventure has become a Spline Disaste
Overall learned a ton about my bike and although I have a love/hate relationship with it, I feel I could tackle anything now, Good job. There is no better way to get intimate with your bike than to change the clutch assembly and input splines. If you can do that, you can do most anything on these b...

Re: My Clutch Slave Misadventure has become a Spline Disaste
Here's the link for a longer shaft http://www.sunshinecoast.ca/bmw/InputShaft.pdf I believe that is an old link and the long shaft was never put into production after the first two prototypes. One was installed in a bike with stripped splines and I don't know if they have rechecked them yet after a...

Re: System Case Reflector Stickers
Here are some pictures of reflectors on my RT. They were the same on my 1150R which I sold (sigh). I used 3M reflective tape in red since white reflectors are illegal in some states on the back of a motor vehicle. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o35/awagnon/RTreflectors2.jpg http://i116.photobuck...

Re: My Clutch Slave Misadventure has become a Spline Disaste
Reference to the Bruno-modified R1150** clutch, using spacers to reposition clutch hub: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207014&page=19 I had the splines crap out on both my 2002 RT and my 2004 1150GS. I still have both bikes and each winter pull the transmissions, check the spli...

Re: Anybody familiar with Utah?
As noted by previous posters, Utah has many great rides. The northern part of the state has high mountain passes (many still closed due to >200% snow pack) and the southern part of the state has beautiful red rock canyons. ( Try Highway 12 from Torrey to Panguitch. ) I've heard Utah has more nationa...

Re: rerouting cables outside headlight bracket
The MotoTech handlebar risers specifically recommend moving some of the cables outside of the headlight bracket. It isn't hard. I removed the windscreen and then the plastic covers over the sides of the big headlight brackets. Then just remove one or both headlight bolts, have someone hold the light...

Re: My spline shaft failed today
"Is this problem less or more common on the R1100R?" I've not heard of the splines failing excessively on R1100XX bikes. In a survey on BMW Sport Touring, the problem was most common on 2002 1150RT's (which I have) and then got progressively less each year for some reason. Had nothing to d...

Re: Handlebar raisers
I had MotoTechniques risers on my 2004 1150R. They come in two sizes and I believe I had the 1 inch up and 1 1/4 inch back size. No trouble with cables, except you do have to re-route the throttle cable to outside of the the headlight bracket. No big deal. Also, I couldn't tell any difference in how...

Re: My spline shaft failed today
Gotta say I agree with Zeke. When repaired, you'll then have a bike on the road and if you still want to part with it you'll get a much, much better price if it's all okey dokey! :) The splines on my RT failed without warning at 42,000 miles. Repaired them myself for about $800. I then thought abou...

Temps really shoot up in the city with all the stop and go. Hey, Dan. I talked with you over on the BMW ST forum. I had forgotten about the QD's. One of mine broke off, but fortunately I was nearly home. You mentioned riding in high temps. Some others may disagree, but R1150R's can over heat if the...

Re: Considering R1150R - newbie questions
I've had a 2004 R1150R, R1200GS, two F650GS's, and an R1150RT. I sold the 1150R last year and I serously regret it. Nice all around bike. I love the RT or touring and the F650 for local rides. But my favorite bike was the 1150R Roadster. The 1150R was a jack of all trades, but master of none. It did...

Re: Curious medical/electronics question?
I had a friend who needed an implanted defibrillator which is sort of like a pacemaker, except it shocks the heart back into a regular rhythm if there is fibrillation or tachycardia. He was told by one cardiologist not to lean too close to the tank when riding or it might trigger his device and he'd...

Re: footpeg options
Look at Suburban Machinery: http://www.suburban-machinery.com/R1150R.htm I have no experience with these, but have heard they are top notch. I had peg lowering blocks on my RT, but found the shifter position to be a pain and eventually removed them. Also, as you know, peg lowering kits decrease the ...

Re: so many 2004s
I believe that most warranties have expired on the 2004 models so more riders are opting to sell and buy a new bike with no worries about major repairs. :-k The way I look at it, you can pay for a bunch of repairs for what a new bike would cost, even with trade-in. This is especially true if you do...

Re: Sleep Apena question?
It may or may not work. With sleep apnea, the tongue falls back and obstructs the airway. Also, the other tissue around the area are lax and add to the obstruction. If the mouth guard pulls your chin far enough forward, it might prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway. ( Like when you do a ja...

Re: She's baaaaaack.....
How long/miles did the other rider have her? Looks like she is in really good shape regardless and practically an RT in her own right. The other owner rode her about 1,700 miles and had an $800 tuneup done. (which I would have done myself) It is "almost" and RT, but not as much an RT as m...

Yep. Wunderlich engine bars. Easy to install and nice mounts already in place for lights. I'm thinking about adopting her again. Still got to convince the wife, though.
