Re: dead R850R
If it's not a safety interlock issue (there is also a switch on the clutch), kill switch left on, or the normal corroded battery post my next check would be the hall sensor

Check to see that the throttle cables are properly seated in the cups on the throttle bodies - one may be pulled out and sitting on the edge
It's easy to knock them out when you remove the tank and this is the kind of rough running you get

Re: 1995 R1100R Oil Level?
Easiest is to drain the oil into a container and then re-fill
Good clean oil can be hard to see in the window if overfilled - also sometime oil gets hed up in the coolers so what starts good ends up overfilled

MaxBMW motorcycles has the fisches online for viewing - I'd start there. it is easy to mix the outflow and return lines up so you want to do it right. If there is no canaster I believe the vents are routed down by the center stand - but don't hold me to that

Re: Front brake question...
At 7k miles your pads shouldn't need replacement - there is a wear indicator built into the pads and the checking of should be in the owners manual
Pad wear shouldn't have a major influence on lever feedback tho - but your 2009 is probably due for fluid replacement if not already done

I'd post the question over on BMWSporttouring - perhaps you need to push the key down (in) to move past and disengage the steering lock

Re: Mounting a Givi top case on a R1100R question???
If the JB weld held out, I assume it was a case of once the stress was relieved it was OK. I was thinking of using something as a spacer or spacers to negate the curve of the factory rack - it sounds like that is essential. Did you top case impinge on to the rear seat? ones I've looked at seem rath...

Re: Mounting a Givi top case on a R1100R question???
Thanks Boxermoose, that gives me a good idea of the setup. I've heard before about cracking the factory rack, I guess the fact it's curved, in addition to the material used that causes the issue when tightening down. I assume if you manage to fit it without incident it works fine otherwise? I had n...

I had the 46ltr mounter to the factory rack with a givi adaptor plate
Be aware that the factory rack is expensive, if still available, and the cheap pot metal will crack when the give plate is bolted on

The smoke could be caused by high resistance due to a dirty/oxidize connection Take the cables off clean/scrape the terminals, lighty sand paper the cable eyes and re-install - a light coat of di-electric grease will help keep o2 out of the connection if you are playing withth einjectors be careful ...

Re: Exhaust change
Keeping the cat with an aftermarket exhaust will change very little -
Do it on the cheap & remove the exhaust and add a 6" downturn to the exit of the cat - plenty of old threads on that (probably more so in the R1150 threads)

Re: Road salt
I read somewhere that just rinsing salt off does more harm than good. I think you're not supposed to use warm water to rinse salt off. I heard that too, whatever. In the time it takes to rinse the salt off, how much more corrosion can warm water cause? I dunno. I ride throughout the winter and agre...
