Re: Ignition stick coils

sykospain, I've been thinking about the "quality" of the notorious BMW stick coils . . . maybe they are 98 percent perfect and the heat from an overheated stuck-in-summer-traffic-backup permanently damages the insulating coating on the copper wire windings and/or internal electronics circ...

Re: Ignition stick coils

I believe there is only one permanent solution , and savvy member sweatmark gave us the link to it. Replace the very vulnerable and unreliable stick coils with proven, ultra reliable, inexpensive automotive coils. They are very inexpensive if you buy a set of 8 for $134 + free shipping (enough to co...

Re: 02 R1150R - Throttle Sync

First, I have only seen ONE post from Decaf, the originator. All these other posts with lots of "instructions" are somewhat helpful, but failed to provide the asked for visual or video to show what is what. One instructed: STEP 3: Remove Free Play from Throttle Body Cables - Carefully turn...

Re: Front Brake Pad Replacement Question.

I guess I should clarify.....when I say a little bit of drag I mean I can hear the pads lightly rubbing on the rotor(s). But not enough to visibly slow the wheel down if on the center stand and give the wheel a spin. You are correct Wayne. I don't know how this was missed, but here is a very detail...

Re: Jump start

turrider, The 9.6 Volt reading is a dead battery that will not come back after charging, especially when it has remained in that discharged state for many weeks where destructive battery plate Sulfation can be irreversible. For a jump start the plastic starter cover removal is the best way to conne...

Re: Help! Sudden Transmission Rattle

Xdot, That sound is directly linked to a failed throwout bearing, which happens to be quite small considering it is a sealed bearing under a constant side load when you are riding down the road. Looking at the heavy return spring tensioned BMW design, I am surprised it lasts more than 20K miles. Yo...

Re: New to me R1150R needs work

I'm hoping that the fork tubes are salvageable given the rust on them. What I see is that almost all of the scary corrosion areas are only cosmetic -except- for the chrome fork tubes. When the bike was last ridden (apparently over some pretty large bumps) any rust pits that likely were on them in t...

Re: How do you get your bike to start in the teens?

A 2004 model may have a weakened starter motor from normal or frequent use wear on the armature slip rings. When that happens the starter draws more Amperage from a frigid battery that is now producing less Amperage. They both reduce the voltage available to the ignition system which will produce a ...

Re: Oil filler cap

The leaking/weeping oil film problem after many miles I found was in tiny defects on the finned plastic factory cap and its plastic outer mounting ring. Close inspection of the flat plastic O-Ring grooves OD showed 2 fine casting flash ridges across the groove bottom where the 2 halves of the factor...

Re: Dayco vs. Bring More Wallet?

Like most riders, I checked the belt on my 2002 R1150R at every valve adjustment when the engine needed to be wrench rotated. I saw no deterioration, even at 64,000 miles (103,000km) when I traded it in for my `09 F800ST. Cars use the same type, width and grade of belt, driving the power hungry powe...

Re: R1150R Passenger Footrests

Downside, when you buy the rider footpegset is this : It's more difficult to get to and use the centerstand, at least with size 12 motorcycleboots. Can you provide the wordy details of the difficulties? I remember my wife complaining that the (R1150R) rear footpegs forced her to sit on her tailbone...

Re: Air filter replacement

Keppelj, The air cleaner lid needs to be lifted quite high -and- be in proper alignment with the rear sealing wall inserted where it belongs before the 2 rear tabs go into their slots. The problem is made worse by the surplus length of those 2 air box lid tabs, which many savvy riders shorten to ma...

Re: Handlebar Grip Rubber

I too must have large diameter handlebar grips. In the first year ownership of my 2009 F800ST with heated grips I installed bicycle handgrip wrap foam rubber cushion made by Bontrager (purchased in a local, dedicated bicycle shop) to quell remaining vibration and mainly to increase the grip diameter...

I just restarted and let it rev off the limiter for a couple seconds and poof the clacking sound is gone. Yeow! Re: Start Procedure after battery disconnect

Riverside, That is correct, but you also need the kill switch ON with the tranny in Neutral, so the Motronic ECU gets its 12V power. The reason you do the stop-2-stop slow throttle twist is to feed the Motronic the ThrottlePositionSensor's (TPS) electrical resistance values for the full range of tw...

Torsen, 1--What year bike? 2--How long and how many miles have you had it? This wandering and unresponsive handling could be caused by worn wheel bearings, especially when you admitted to riding in the dirt. A setting you can change that would cause these "undesirable-2-you" traits is exc...

Re: Trouble shifting into first gear

When you say "doesn't sound good" what are you thinking? OK, time to overdo it again. If it is not because the shift linkage pivots are dry, dirty and binding, then it can indicate a bent shift fork inside the transmission. It could also be shifting softly and too slowly or shifting while...
