Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?
Thanks for the reply, David. Battery is fairly new and no starting issues. I've also reset the clock several times. I will try a hard reboot by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and check the terminals.

My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?
I'm having an odd malfunction in my clock. When the ignition is shut off, the clock stops. Got to work yesterday morning at 7:40 am. When I hoped on my bike for the ride home at the end of the day, the clock read 7:48 am! It's been doing this for about a week (yet no other electrical issues). I fear...

Re: Steering damper droop. Easy fix.
Hard to say. There is no fluid on either end, and no discernible play as you described. I think removing the wobble by replacing the dry rotted ring accounts for the improved feel. Of course that could be placebo. I always thought if I had to replace the steering damper I'd go with Hyperpro to match...

Re: Steering damper droop. Easy fix.
I checked it and it seems to dampen through a full range of motion. Thanks Dale! So did my bad one. The mechanic at Engles Motors showed me how to check it. Where you feel the "free-motion" (no resistance/damping) is a very very narrow range right as it starts moving, no matter where it i...

Re: Steering damper droop. Easy fix.
Good reminder. You may also want to check the foam rubber rings around the shift-linkage helm joints. They go away - allowing dirt into the joint which then starts destroying it. Grease them when installing them. Easy fix - maybe 5 minutes each (there are 2..) Gotcha. The post that came along somet...

Steering damper droop. Easy fix.
So I noticed my steering damper drooped a bit when the bike was at rest. In fact it had a good bit of play where it attaches to the trailing arm: http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i393/txplants/Centerstand/SD2_zpscyky9z4c.jpg http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i393/txplants/Centerstand/SD0_zpspok...

Re: r1200gs compatibility
Not sure, but it might be a direct fit. Check part numbers for both models in the microfiche at Max's or Bob's BMW websites. I've talked to the folks at Bob's on the phone in the past and they were really helpful. You might also check some of the aftermarket systems and see if the same product fits ...

Re: Centerstand bolt fail anyone?
R12RnHouston, nice writeup. There was a video posted somewhere that showed how to get these heavy centerstand springs off and back on without killing yourself. It was pretty simple - the person used a length of strong thin rope, and used the rear-wheel as an anchor point, making a loop from the rea...

Re: Centerstand bolt fail anyone?
I finally got around to replacing the center-stand bolts. I purchased this Motion-pro spring puller (which I did not end up using), a 6mm long handle allen wrench, and T50 Torx long handle “L” wrench (both of which I did need). When I looked at the microfiche to order the bolts, I went ahead and ord...

Yea, it's hot. But at least it's humid.deilenberger wrote:If mine haven't (lower suspension, standard centerstand) - I don't think it's a huge issue. Of course if you're looking for work to do, doing general maintenance like that isn't a bad thing. I'd just rather be riding.. Hot in Houston?

Centerstand bolt fail anyone?
Folks, Has anyone had a failure of a center-stand bolt? I read about them frequently on GS forums, and also suggestions the new factory bolts are stronger. I'm a proponent of reasonable preemptive maintenance, and am tempted to pull the center-stand, grease the bushings and pivot pins, and replace t...

Re: Driveline Problem
So this weekend I decided to change my final drive lube in preparation for an upcoming trip. I took a few pictures to show you all just how easy it is to lube the rear u-joint with the final drive dropped. Gather tools (I dedicated a 1/4" drive 5/16th socket and short extension to insert the gr...

Re: Driveline Problem
Yep, both u-joints. The dome-shaped screw in the picture is removed, screw in a "zerk" fitting, grease it (three pumps of grease with moly every 10K), and replace the screw. Mine had a lot of corrosion on the rear that I like to blame on the previous owner who apparently didn't notice a d...

Re: Driveline Problem
The rebuild with grease inserts and heavy duty u-joints installed with snap rings was $390 plus shipping. About a seven week turnaround. Looks nice. I assume there wasn't a problem with the shaft before this? Did he do both U joints (front and rear), and is there any fitting on the cross to lube th...
