Re: 2010 Volkswagen will get 230 MPG
Off-topic off topic.... The Smart cars are a pretty common sight here in the UK and electric cars are becoming more popular in London as they are liable to the congestion charge. Other than my R1150R, I drive a Fiat Panda turbo-diesel which gives almost 60 mp(imperial)g, seats 4 people and has a top...

Re: Advice on torquing valve covers please
Thanks for all the advice, which seems pretty emphatic: CLEAN GASKET with NO OIL.
I'm off out to the garage now.

Advice on torquing valve covers please
As far as I can tell, the correct the torque setting for the valve (cyclinder head) cover bolts is 8nm. This doesn't feel very tight and sure enough I get some oil seepage from the covers. I am not using new gaskets - should I be? - and have lightly smeared the gasket surfaces with clean oil before ...

It was the first of the 2 links.
Am just completing an annual (start of summer) service so have just ordered some at 1/2 the BMW price (and that includes delivery).

Re: Boxer oil. . .
FWIW, I was at my BMW dealer today buying some roundels for my topbox (£17 about $34 each).
The dealer was telling me that BMW now recommend Castrol ACT-EVO GP 4T 20W-50 for all boxer engines irrespective of mileage.
Only available in 1 litre packs - £9 from BMW about £5 elsewhere.

Re: Kisan SignalMinder installed this weekend
I also fitted a Signalminder today - how have I managed for 6 years without one! Brilliant piece of kit. I manage to run the brake wire without any cutting or splicing into the existing wiring which I was nervous about and reluctant to do. My Kisan unit was a used unit and the cable supplied was not...

thanks rdmsith3 - yes, that seems to have done the trick. It was a question of me being impatient and over-anxious rather than getting my brain into gear.

MRA Vario screen on R1150R
After years of dithering I finally ordered a vario screen from Wunderlich as a direct replacement for my BMW speedster screen. I rushed home excitedly, whipped out the four bolts on the speedster screen, offered up the new vario and screen and....... .....the two sets of holes are set about 1.5cm fu...

Re: Battery Removal- How?
Take the tank off. It takes 20-25 minutes at most the first time you do it. Thereafter it's a 10 to 15 minute job with the standard toolkit. Only 2 torque keys needed. Don't forget to disconnect the clip-fit socket for the fuel pump. I fitted the Omega QDs ordered through Omega UK. They took about 5...

Re: Another top-box solution
I started off using a Dremel but the cutting disc broke so I resorted to a coping saw. Finish it off the cut edges with some sandpaper.

Re: Another top-box solution
I had no idea that this was such a tried-and-tested method. Perhaps I read the thread some time back and my subsconscious mind recently suggested it to my conscious mind as an 'original' idea. Well done to MixR for coming up with the idea in the first place.

Re: Another top-box solution
Riceburner, I did consider that option as well but I like the lift-off-in-two-seconds capability of the mounting plate. The advantage of your method is greater security though. You mention 'utterly stable' and this was a concern of mine, in that ultimately the box is only held on by a couple of bolt...

Another top-box solution
I have the BMW pannier rails and luggage rack fitted to my R and, being a tight-*rse, didn't want to go to the expense of the H&B rack and top-box, even though they look like a quality fitment and, if money was no object, I'd probably take this route. I purchased a Shad (Moto-detail) 42 litre bo...

Re: Tire Pressure
Check the tire manufacturer's recommendations maybe although I don't suppose they all give the required data.
I run Metezeler Z6s and their website recommends 2.5 bar/36 psi front and 2.9 bar/42 psi rear.

Re: Tank-off maintenance
I am planning on mounting a Stebel Nautilus in the stock horn location. I was a little worried that the volume would be muted a bit with it in the ABS space. I mounted my Stebel Nautilus under the tank in the ABS space and believe me it is still loud enough to make babies cry and car drivers reach ...

Re: Side Case Clean-up?
I have used some very fine steel wool to clean any scuffs and then applied some black automotive trim restorer.
It tends to leave a slightly smooth surface and I haven't yet discovered a way of restoring the original slightly-dimpled effect.
