Re: FAILED ABS Unit

one more observation concerning reliability-- in general the r1200r has been PLagued with numerous documented failures................. i dont believe that statement is even contestable. Do you mean your bike, or R1200Rs in general? Seems to me most here on the forum are pretty happy with their R12...

Re: FAILED ABS Unit

If your bike has ABS you ride like it has, if it doesn't you ride like it hasn't. Well we were talking about the average rider, who more than likely is not going to be able to stop as fast without ABS as with it. In a panic situation the ABS could very well indeed save one's butt; it could make the...

At least not until one really needed it, as in an emergency braking situation.

Re: E Gear or 6th gear

You are lugging the engine. Use 5th gear for passing, not 6th.

Keep the revs above 3000, these engines are happiest above 3K. Don't be afraid to rev it up.

Re: FFF - Finally Finished Last Farkle - new buyers beware!

Last one? Doubtful. Probably won't be long before the farkle disease strikes again! It never ends.

I didn't see aftermarket shocks in your list. I think I'm ready for some with only 14K on my '08. Either that, or trade it in on a GS...

Re: another dead horse

Might try bar risers instead of getting a lower seat and peg extenders. The peg extenders do reduce your ground clearance and put your feet in an odd position relative to the shifter. Takes a bit of getting used to. I have the high seat and peg extenders and bar risers on my '08 due to my 6' 1"...

Re: Do you warm up your R1200R?

+1 on the 30-60 second warmup, a bit more when the weather is cooler. My bike doesn't run quite right, especially just off idle, until it's been warmed up a bit. And definitely, don't rev the engine much until it is thoroughly warmed up - a few minutes riding.

Re: Top Three Mods/Farkles

Since I am a tall guy I had to make some mods to give me more legroom. It's better, but still don't have quite enough.

1. Peg extenders - Suburban Machinery
2. Tall seat - factory, does this count as a farkle?
3. Bar risers - MV Verholen, now it needs a longer brake line.

Re: Help cant select 1st or neutral ?

There's probably nothing wrong with your bike. You may not be used to shifting BMW motorcycles. This topic comes up often. See this thread on the R1200R forum; there are a number of others along similar lines. Basically the transmission needs to be spinning to select 1st gear. http://www.r1150r.org/...

Re: yet another fuel strip saga

Mine stopped working a while back, took it to the dealer, they looked at it and it magically started working again. Been working ever since. Hope it stays that way!

I wouldn't care that much if mine went out again except it causes the low fuel light to be on all the time. :(

Re: Horn button

I have more issues finding the horn button TBH - after 4.5 years and 31k Miles on my bike, I still end up pressing the LH turn signal button instead of the horn button when rushed (which is of course, just when you need to hit the horn intuitively  ). I've accidentally hit the horn when I mea...

Re: Motorcycle Commuter Survival Tips

Lastly, take a Intermediate rider course from MSF or your state equivalent as a nice refresher.. I have learned SOOO much from that course, even though I started riding 25 years ago, with my long break between, I needed the training and the learning. That's a good idea. No matter how long you have ...

Re: Changing tires today. Going to Road Pilot 3's

... Also, have you checked insurance rates for those things? I could farkle my bike several times over dealing with those kind of rates. Superbike = Super Insurance Rate :-k I had Farmers insurance until fairly recently. They consider the R1200R to be a "superbike" because it's over 100 H...

Re: Motorcycle Commuter Survival Tips

+1 on the tips so far. I always strive to NEVER be alongside a car, they have this bad habit of changing lanes without looking. This can be tough in heavy traffic though. And what about the grey haired motor-cyclists? There's alot of us about... Other motorcyclists can be just as dangerous as people...

Re: Booster plug

FWIW, calling the Booster Plug snake oil tells me you either never had one or your bike never needed one, because snake oil they ain't! If you have the problem, a Booster Plug is the answer - EOS. If you don't have the problem, and many don't, it's hard to relate to it or consider there's a solutio...

Re: Gnu Member

You have to learn to trust the engine. It has enough torque that it can easily take off with no throttle at all.. even on a slight incline. I often forget (old..) to shift down when I come up to a light, and taking off in 2nd gear is no big deal at all. The bike can do it - you just have to let it....

Re: warning fellow riders

The traditional method for warning oncoming riders of LEO presence is to take either hand(I would say clutch hand), fingers extended and together, like you're getting ready for a salute...then raise your arm and tap the top of your helmet several times, as if you are patting yourself on the head. F...

Hello everyone, I'm planing a 4000 mile trip. Starting in Denver going to San Francisco down the coast to L.A. and back to Denver. On the way i'm planing on hitting most of the natural wonders like Lake Tahoe, Grand Canyon and Pikes Peak. Sounds like a great ride. How are you getting from Chicago t...

Re: New member, new BMW owner..

I run Dino oil. Don' t see the point of the more expensive stuff but opinions vary. I think the key is to run it hard. I babied my last R bike and it used oil till I sold it at 100k. I ran my current R12 hard from the day I got it and it uses no oil between services. I also use dino oil, synthetic ...
