Re: Looking for an R12R - Los Angeles
Alex - thanks. As you said - breaks my $5k limit by a bit (50%).. and it's the special model with the dumb-ass (my opinion) spoke wheels with tubes. The spoke rims just don't do it for me, and finding good R1200R rims used isn't easy at all (since I've bent two front rims so far, I'm somewhat experi...

Looking for an R12R - Los Angeles
Since my son lives there.. I was thinking of getting a bike for California so I don't have to ride there (it's a chore - but someone's gotta do it.. but Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas have gotten old now..) So I figured another R12R. If anyone knows of a relatively inexpensive one (under $5k..) miles no...

Re: Overheating?
I've just recently experiencing overheating on my '11. When on a longer ride (600-1000 miles), even stopping for a red light causes the indicator to climb higher than I've ever had prior. This happens now even when its only in the 70's. If I miss the light and have to wait 2 cycles the indicator cl...

Re: Fuel strip calibration
What the tech came up with is a piece of an oil bottle, cut to fit over the strip with some overlap, held in place with several tie-wraps through holes punched in the oil bottle piece. It's been there for over a year now, which pretty much sets a longevity record for fuel strips with me. Does it he...

Re: Overheating?
I've seen higher. When stuck in that sort of situation - what I do - is shut the engine off - and simply stop until a gap big enough to accelerate a bit opens in front of me (say 1-tractor/trailer length) - then I start it and accelerate briskly to the end of the gap and shut the engine off again. S...

Re: Fuel strip calibration
I'm playing with the idea of re calibrating my fuel strip. Has anyone removed the fuel strip. What was involved. It looks straight forward, but their's always a surprise. Looking for someone that ACTUALLY did it. Harry - due to the path the fuel strip takes in the R1200R tank- from down in one lobe...

Re: Third fuel strip in 600 miles
Don, At the urging of someone here, I filled out the recall notice after the first one failed three miles from the dealers door, several years ago. It felt like it had no impact and was forgotten until I read your reminder. This is one of those things where the "mass" of the complaints fi...

Re: Third fuel strip in 600 miles
Kobe22, Don't disagree with your position, the brand suffers from numerous issues, many of which are self inflicted right in the engineering office. I have done about the only thing available to me to do, I have the strip replaced each and every time it fails, I also get my dig's in on every intern...

Re: Alternator belt - PITA on the 2012..
Roger - thanks for that info. I went to Harbor Freight yesterday (slumming..) and looked for a 32mm and 34mm socket - they had 1 32mm 1/2" drive deep impact socket - $5 - and that was it. Glad I didn't buy it. I'd guess the nut hasn't changed - and looking at the deep impact socket, even if it ...

Re: Towing W/R1200r
I've seen lots of R1200RTs of the same era pulling all sorts of trailers. And haven't heard of any weight related problems. While GVWR should be noted - it's mostly the weight carrying capacity of the bike, not so much the total weight of the bike.. ie - it's the weight measured where the wheels hit...

Re: Alternator belt - PITA on the 2012..
David - it probably would be hugely easier on a lift. As it was - I was rolling around on rubber mats on a concrete floor. That's no place for someone > 70 with arthritis. I'm feeling that project today.. I thought perhaps CRS had struck - and I was forgetting something about doing it on the '07 - s...

Alternator belt - PITA on the 2012..
I did the alternator belt several times on my 2007. That was when BMW spec'd them for 36,000 miles - later reduced to 24,000 miles. Since my 2012 has 31,500 miles on it - I decided to do the belt before I leave for a trip next weekend. So - I bought one from the dealer ($47 - robbery IMHO.. it's a C...

Re: New PIAA LED lights - and mounting
Glad to hear that Harry.. they also are great as conspicuity lights during the day. Two NJS riders who were following me had them on their bikes (wonder how that happened?) and I was always able to see if they remained behind me.

Re: Relay cross reference list
That PN also comes up on cross-references to various BMW car models - specifically the E30 series, but bet'cha it's used in a lot of BMW models. If there is a BMW automobile dealer they undoubtedly could supply it. Or an auto-parts store with a savy guy behind the counter could cross-reference it to...

Re: Final Drive Oil - Change Frequency
David - when you replaced the seal and bearing, was it a wet bearing? IE - behind the seal? And due to this thread - I actually DID change the oil today. What IDIOT spec'd an allen-head fill plug and a torx drain plug? That's gotta be some serious engineering dumbness. Make the two plugs use the sam...

Re: Gear Ratios Changed?
I have an '07 "model release" R1200R. Just to see if some poorly described features were described better in a later version of the owner's manual (they were), I downloaded the 4th edition of the manual, which has a 2010 revision date. I noticed that the primary and all six gear ratios we...

Re: Ohlins modification
I like that idea - and I have a spare stock shock I bought off ebay rather inexpensively way back when. I'll have to measure up my Hyperpro and see if they could be exchanged. The Hyperpro has enough adjustment for me (3-4 turns when I load up the bike to ride to California or somewhere interesting)...

Re: Final Drive Play (Sorry guys)
I suspect you are correct in assuming that the newer design is being show as a "replacement" to the older design. My curiosity now is can the previous designs be retrofit with the open race grove ball bearing and effectively "switched" over to the newer design? One would have to...

Re: Final Drive Play (Sorry guys)
I must admit that statement should not have been presented as fact, but speculation after examination of the latest parts catalog's. I have NOT opened the final drive case on my bike to prove this theory correct. I have been trying to determine the cause of gray/milky gear case oil in my final driv...
