Re: Riding below freezing: do-able or suicidal...?
I also ride year-round, mostly when it's above freezing and the roads aren't too messy. I don't worry too much about salt; after all, the machine is there to serve me, not vice versa. If I want to ride it, I do. Just hose it off when you can. After 14 years, my (always garaged) Beemer has very littl...

Re: 1150R signal light issue
I've been running the SM for 14 years, always on bright running lights. I've barely had to replace any bulbs. Don't worry about it.

Re: ABS or not ABS?
I also chose non-ABS when I bought my bike new. As far as I was concerned, power brakes on a motorcycle was the answer to a question nobody had asked. If they had been non-servo, I would have gone with ABS.

Re: Self cancelling indicators
The Signalminder also has a short duration fast flash feature when the signal switch is held down on actuation. Useful for getting attention when, for instance, changing lanes on the interstate (or anywhere else).

Re: Oil Usage
The results are in. Even after a day of very aggressive use on a track, oil consumption remains unchanged. I still have to add 8 oz every 400 miles or so. Looks like it will always be this way, but that's OK.

If it hasn't already been done, replace the plastic quick connects in the fuel lines with metal ones. DAMHIK.

Re: Oil Usage
If I got to that consumption level, I'd consider it a big success. But, as I said, checking and adding oil to boxer motors is so easy, it really isn't a significant issue.

Well, I just did my track day. Will report later on oil consumption. Track day was well worth the time and effort.

Re: Any garment to keep sweat away from your jacket?
I prefer leather over textile, and in the warm months use a Vanson Properf "Breeze" jacket. The fully perforated leather works pretty much like mesh, but it's pricey. Worth it to me, though.

Re: New tires kind of twitchy
Most modern motorcycle tires do not have mold release compound on the treads (only on the sidewalls, to produce clear letters/engraving). The molds are now Teflon. So the old notion of "scrubbing in" new tires is essentially obsolete.

Re: Besides Ohlins and Wilbers........
I run Hyperpro in back, Ohlins in front. Worth every cent. The way I look at it, the resale value of the bike (02 R1150R) is essentially irrelevant; mine only has 46 k miles, and I'm not planning on selling it.

Re: Can anything make the R1150r louder?
Like EasyBee, I run the Akrapovic Titanium can with the cat intact. It provides a nice deep sound, adds about 5 hp (according to Akra) and shaves almost thirty pounds. It's a reasonable price for a quality product (BMW uses Akra mufflers as OEM equipment on some performance models), and I recommend ...

Re: Always have to use "choke" on cold start
It's not a choke. ....And for the poster who has stopped using yours because it is sticky. You just need to take it apart and clean it good. But be VERY careful not to lose the little spring...which resembles a ball point pen spring. Sorry, I meant to refer to it as the fast idle lever. And ...

Try rolling on the throttle gently WITHOUT using the enrichener lever at all. Can't guarantee it'll work, but it does for me.....

Re: Always have to use "choke" on cold start
Since my fast idle lever has become a little sticky with age, I don't use it. For cold starts I just manually roll on the throttle as I hit the starter. Works just fine.

Re: How do you ride your 1150?
I disagree. Low load cruising at steady 60mph/3000 rpm would be just fine. Whacking open the throttle under the same conditions, not such a good idea.Buckster wrote:I wouldn't let it go below 3k while in 6th gear......ever.
