Re: Luggage whidth from side to side ?

Don, Yah they are a bit wider at the front, mabe 36" is wishfull thinking, Even at 36" they are wider than the handle bars, you have to be careful when spliting lanes. My R12R shares space with two other machines so the bags allways come off when it's put away.

Re: Luggage whidth from side to side ?

From the center line of the motorcycle (seat latch key hole) to the outside of the bag ( the same as the RT uses without the paint job) is aprox 18". My dealer told me the thinner lid is not available in the U.S. But others (BMW riders) have told me that they are, so I don't know.

Re: Why you switched?

I did'nt switch, but I did add to the fleet. I have a Ducati Multistrada that I enjoy riding, but my wife thought it might be just alittle too much sport and not enough tour for her, mabe 30 years ago it would be fine. So we took some test rides, Honda ST, Yamaha FJR, BMW RT, all too heavy and too m...

Re: R1200R Tires - Pirelli Scorpion Sync DIY

I have a Multistrada that came standard with the Pirellis, they work well, about 6k from the rear, the front would have gone farther but I change in pairs. When the R12R is due I may install the pirellis. For do it your self types, Honda sells a set of rim protecters for alloy rims #07772-0020201 th...

Re: Honda ST 1100 PAN EUROPEAN

I have not riden the 1100, but I have riden a ST1300, They are a heavy motorcycle almost 800 lbs. They have a decient seat, have great range, and a killer headlamp, it is a Honda so service is everywhere. Overall a very nice road bike. My biggest complaint was the amount of heat it generated, at fre...

Re: Air filters for R1200R

An air filter of any media needs to have enough area to flow a full volume of air at wide open throttle. That said, because of noise and emission laws, and the fact that most people don't ride at full throttle all the time, compromises are made because big air boxes, and big air filters just don't f...

Re: What are the essential extras?

A tank bag, a tubeless tire repair kit, and a cell phone. The OE bags are the best ones, and the only ones that will fit the BMW mounts. If you get hard bags get some soft bags to go inside, as they are much easyer to haul into a motel. And find a good dealer.

Re: Hexhead Model Comparo's GS vs R; ST vs RT; etc

I have a friend that bought a 05 RT shortly after they came out, and I always thought he was happy with it, because he did some serious touring with it. I rode it some, it was ok, but I did not like all the plastic. For the last 2 years I've been riding a Ducati Multistrada, my friend has riden the ...

Re: Replacement Antenna Key Ring...Failure??

I have a Ducati Multistrada, and it uses a simular system of key reconition. With each machine comes a code card, and you use the throttle to input the code should something hapen to the antitheft system. I have never had to use this process, but I know one who has, it over rides the system and lets...

Re: Gearbox oil?

On the subject of oil, I say never argue politics, religon, or the brand of a mans motor oil, because that falls back under religon. Seriously let me say alittle about gear oil. Straight weight gear lubes are hard to find now at a retail level, they are still made, but mainly for industrial applacat...

I talked to my dealer last Saturday, he said for the 09 R1200R's will be available with new colors, white, and blue, NLA. crystle gray, black with stripes. The lower R12R will be available as well. He had no 08 R12R's but the 08 black with stripes were still available. Price for the 09's not known y...

Re: Luggage rail hardware Question

BMW uses torx fasteners on the newer machines. But any ISO metric fastener of the correct size will fit. Black metric torx fasteners will be difficult to find. Go to good hardware store and get some 6mm allen cap screws, the zinc plated ones will not rust, you can always paint them black. For a cool...

Re: BMW R1200R vs Yamaha FJR 1300

The FJR is a very good motorcycle, I bought an 05 new. A FJR will run away from most BMW twins, It is a good handler for a 650 lb. motorcycle, It has good wind protection, it gets reasonable fuel milage, and has a great set of headlamps. It could use a better seat, but you can say that about most st...

Re: Clear view mirror???

Try this, Get a few stick on weights like are used to balance wheels, and stick them on the back side of the mirror, it might take 2 or 3. BMW's plastic mirrors are very light, sometimes alittle weight will change the frequency at whitch they viberate, it helps to clear the image. I used this method...

Re: Which tank bag?

I use a Famsa tank bag I got for a Ducati Multistrada, I had to get another base for it to fit the BMW, now just a zipper to switch between the two. I also have a smaller Cortech magnetic tank bag, works great on the R, as it has a steel fuel tank.
