Re: EWS Electronic immolilizer

Exact technical information.... no. But in general it works by using a key with a coded chip imbedded in it and an antenna on the motorcycle that communicates with the chip when the key is inserted and turned. The antenna on the R12R is the black, plastic, circular piece surrounding the ignition key...

Re: Mss Voni Glaves achivement on boxer BMW

It should not be overlooked that one important factor in Voni being able to ride all those miles is her husband Paul. Paul is a technical writer for the Owners News and is as close to an expert on BMW motorcycles as there is. You don't ride a bike for nearly 400,000 miles without someone doing the h...

Re: Mss Voni Glaves achivement on boxer BMW

Voni is very well known in the BMW and broader motorcycle community. She, along with the late Ardis Kellerman became the first two women to ride over one million miles on BMWs about two years ago. Voni is anything but in the background. She is a strong advocate for motorcycling and youth training, a...

Re: CHP leaves BMW, goes back to H-Ds

I was told by the GM of our local HD/BMW dealer a few years ago that HD leased the bikes to the local PDs for three years at $1 per year. Not sure about any maintenance deal, but the PDs stored the bikes on the Harley showroom floor all winter. Harley wants cops on bikes very badly; good for their i...

Hmm, starting to think I should by an R. What does everyone think about this deal? $8,500 for a '07 w/ less than 9K miles with... -BMW GPS -Factory side cases with bag liners -BMW 28-liter top case -Parabellum Scout fairing + oem windshield -soft tank and tail bags -ABS -traction control -heated gr...

Re: Advice on taking the plunge

Used to have an RT and liked it a great deal. Bought my wife an R and she did not bond with it, so I had both. Found I was always getting on the R. Sold the RT and replaced it with a FJR. Now the R is for going north (we ride to Alaska and the Yukon every year), dirt road riding and local rides just...

Re: 2014 Calendar

I will be happy to do the file hosting/managing and set up a Cafe Press page to purchase them from. It will be the same as last year, I'll post up a link for Smugmug where anyone can upload full size files easily. I can post up instructions with the link. If a couple other folks want to team up and...

Re: replacement of oem heated handlebar grips

It cost me a lot of money when I hosed the OEM heated grips trying to get cover off and put different diameter grips on; can't be done without destroying the OEM grips. Get used to OEM size or the "larger diameter" of the foam jobs...I did trim the ends of the foam grips and they look bet...

Re: fuel strip

There would probably be a bunch of accidents caused by riders staring at the fuel tank while trying to get that last half mile out of a tank of fuel.

Re: Oil Filter

I am very confident that the filter had 6000 miles on it. It was installed at the 36000 mile service by an independent mechanic; I pulled it off at 42000 (+/- a couple hundred miles at either end). Bike is an RT used on MT pavement almost exclusively. As I said, I think it was over oiled which may h...

Re: Oil Filter

I'm running the pflow stainless steel reuse filter. Pretty bullet proof, reusable filter element, 17mm socket head, cooling fins, magnetic catch. Pretty good for $90 Been many discussions about stainless steel filters on the motorcycle forums. Pictures like this one that has become blocked and then...

Re: Oil Filter

I think there's a short one, maybe the 101? I have a Mann MW75 and may bring it to advance auto to check sizes. It's more a matter of convenience for me, and they work well. Stock air filters for me, or the Mann version of same. I want to toss them. My roadster came with a K&N and it was unbeli...

Re: Oil Filter

This was the first and only KN filter I've ever dealt with so I'm no expert. I think the filter may have been over oiled, but the real problem is that the KN filter has far less surface area and therefore less area to collect dirt.

Re: Oil Filter

This is a K&N air filter I took out of a friends R1200RT when I serviced it for him. It had been in service less than 6000 miles in normal conditions. I live in the same area and change my OEM filter every 12,000 miles although it still looks fairly clean. If you still want a K&N, then I thi...

Re: TKC 80's

I have a friend who often runs TKC80s on her R12R. She lives in Alaska and has taken her R to Deadhorse and Inuvik on multiple occasions. She reports no issues while running on pavement, wet or dry. I've never run them on my R, but I did live in Alaska for 16 years and ran them on my GSPD and my wif...
