Re: Expected range of mileage on dry clutch and signals it's time to replace?

I had the transmission pulled on my recently departed '02 1150R to check things out. The clutch was still within spec.

The splines and input shaft however was almost toast! :x

Wayne - pretty much the same for both! :D

Although, honestly, the new ride is smoother, once I got used to it.

Re: How high of an RPM range do you ride at?

Just cruising around, between 3 and 4K, trying not to lug the engine. On a nice twisty mountain road, it seldom gets below 4,000, getting close to redline often. Between the torque and engine braking, you can ride for miles without hitting the gear shift or the brake! :) That's fun riding!

I wore one for many years behind the plate as a catcher. Took it off as soon as I could! Think I'll pass!

Re: Tire Time

Regardless of the put down of Michelins further up, their Pilot Road 3 and now 4 have given me good service, wet or dry. I've ridden in rain so hard, cars were pulling over! :P Mileage, I'm no indicator for any brand. In 14 years on the R, never got more than 7 or 8k out of a rear or 9k out of a fro...

The spray coming up from the road is much nastier than rain. And it will get on you too! And the rocks kicked up are tough on your engine and your shins. Sounds foolish to me.

Re: Beakster Bash Lexington VA May 18 - 22, 2017

Below is a link to my pictures but before you click on it, I would like to point out some history of this event for the newer members or those who have never come to one of these. The first one was at Deal's Gap (The Dragon) in 2004. 25 or so of us there, almost all on R1150Rs. But BMW made the last...

Re: Beakster Bash Lexington VA May 18 - 22, 2017

I got back around 1:30. After missing all the rain for the riding Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Rain Karma caught up to me today and the last 3 hours were in the rain. Discovered I need new rain pants! Great weekend of riding and good to see everyone that made it. I will download and post my ...

Re: How to make my system cases look new again

A few years ago, my bags were looking a little used, including a couple of runs ins with pipe bollards at gas pumps that jumped out in front of me as I was leaving. My solutions was a can of spray on bed liner from Lowes hardware. Lightly sand to smooth out any scratches then carefully tape and news...

Re: Beakster Bash Lexington VA May 18 - 22, 2017

I plan on arriving Thursday night. A little later Thursday than I had planned (that pesky job keeps interfering with riding) but I will be there. Hoping to get in a couple of good days riding the great roads in VA and WV and seeing everyone again. It looks like Vince won't make it this year (his pes...

Re: R1150r rear fender elimination

I have had mine cut down for, oh, about 10 years, and don't notice any exceptional spray on my back. People following closely however, that's different! I suppose it would be controlled by just how close you cut it though. I left a significant portion below the license plate. And I ride in the...

Jeff - there was no doubt you were suffering from hypothermia when you showed up for lunch! Been there myself and know the symptoms well. Fortunately, nothing hot coffee and soup couldn't fix!

Just cut if off evenly below the license plate. Just know that any riders following too close in the rain are going to get sprayed!

Re: Riding below freezing: do-able or suicidal...?

I ride year round in the NC mountains. Temps aren't the problem (electric jacket and gloves!) but if there has been precipitation the night before of any kind, I wait until it warms ups. Even then, broken water lines and shady spots in the mountains require constant vigilance. Of course, cold paveme...

Re: (new rider) wind while riding at 50 mph uncomfortable

+1 on the above. Especially the 'ride like your are invisible' part. I also add, ride like everyone else driving is a moron or out to kill you. I have fewer close calls on the bike than the car, because I am focused almost 100% while riding, not listening to the radio, adjusting the air conditioning...

Re: Any garment to keep sweat away from your jacket?

I have a Vanson Pro Perf and it flows enough air to freeze your butt below 60 F. And with the armor, the crash protection is wonderful. I have thoughtfully crash tested mine for all of you so you don't have to test it yourself. A 35 mph low side scraped the jacket up pretty good but that and the Mot...
