Re: Over Torque - Just Curious

the specifications ... really seemed to be light specs to me. 105 Nm is rougly the weight of a full suitcase at the end of your torque wrench. That's a good effort if you are only using your arm strength. Are you that strong or are you stepping on the wrench to apply the torque? On the other hand, ...

Re: Slave cylinder, spline lube redux

Keith, I'm really confused: you are doing all of this because of a suspected clutch slave cylinder problem?

Re: Brake bleed question.

The wood spacers are used to ensure that the fluid is filled to the correct level. The fluid volume in the tanks is so small that the amount of pad wear influences significantly the fill level. I suppose that if your pads are quite worn, you could overfill the reservoir. It took me longer to make th...

Re: My Final Drive Story: What Should I Do?

In addition to the comments above, I would caution against a "fire hose" washing of the inside of the swing arm: the U-joints in there could suffer from being sprayed, especially with brake cleaner or other aggressive solvents.

Re: Octane vs gas mileage

I fully agree with everything written above. Notice, however, that on engines equipped with knock sensors (e.g. R1200R, cars, etc.) the message will be a little different. In those vehicles, the sensor will avoid knocking by retarding the timing, and lower octane may give worse mileage/power even wi...

Re: '04/05 owners please look in your electrics box

I am curious to know if no CCP means open-loop only. By that, I mean that the O2 sensor is not used. I think that one should be able verify whether the sensor is being used by measuring the voltage of the O2 sensor (about 0.5V when in closed loop, near zero when richer), but I have never seen it don...

Re: Fuel Economy - what am I missing?

First make sure that you are indeed putting 4.1 gals. If you are not squeezing in the last drop of fuel or if the light comes on a little early, we may be talking about, say, 3.7 gals (31 mpg). Secondly, all bets are off when talking about city riding. Is it Big Apple-type commuting, or more like Le...

Welcome and congrats! The R is perfect for riding in the Appalachian Mountains. Make sure that you hook up with Yong (yjleesvrr/Blacksburg) and Brian (DSKYZD/Bluefield). Here are some answers to your questions: -Surge: you need to try first to synch your throttle bodies. You can make a water manomet...

I think it is more like Chicken Little. Mike, here's a cheap Rockster on eBay with an acknowledged "clutch" problem. Sounds like chickenlittle to me. I bet you can diagnose it too from 1000 miles away... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-R1150R-Edition-80-Rockster-Bad-Clutch-CHEAP_W0QQit...

Re: How to check your clutch splines in 30 minutes

These numbers make sense to me. We can compare them to an estimate of how much freeplay there should be just prior to failure. -Number of splines=18, Radius of clutch plate=3" -Pitch angle: 360/18= 20 degrees Assume that catastrophic failure occurs when 1/5 of the circular pitch is worn on the ...

Can you explain this? If worn splines do not display any circumferential play, that means that the wear occurs in a different mode, such as wobble.

Re: Clutch or Tranny Noise

Checked with a timing light with the vacum hoses disconnected Ooooh.... I used to do it like that too on my 1976 Triumph TR7. That's not the correct way on a boxer, though. You are supposed to check timing statically. On trick is to use the triggering of the fuel pump at TDC. Search for the method ...

Re: Clutch or Tranny Noise

Eddie, I think that the head bolts should only be re-tightened at the initial 600-mile service. Otherwise, that final 1/2 turn could overtighten them.

Re: HELP!!! Potential issue with transmission; 02 R1150R

Obaid and Lobo have identical bikes and identical concerns. I was suggesting that before investing in a $250 bore scope, they might compare the free play (rotational) in their clutches. I haven't done it but I have read about it elsewhere. I even seem to recall people discussing values for the amoun...

You are probably right: the spline wear would not make the shifter feel as if it's stuck.

Re: HELP!!! Potential issue with transmission; 02 R1150R

Spline wear is measurable without disassembly of the transmission. You only need to remove the starter (watch for the hot cable!) and measure the amount of free-play of the clutch disk on its axle. I think that if you bungee-wrap you clutch lever, you should be able to rotate the clutch disk without...

Re: HELP!!! Potential issue with transmission; 02 R1150R

I agree with Airman: I have never had the shifter stick like that either. Plus, there is nothing wrong with "shut throttle/ slow down/ pull the clutch/ shift down". (MikeCam took "coast" to mean riding with clutch pulled). I am still concerned about the clutch splines. When they ...
