Re: Oil leak out filler cap

I was always worried that the cheap and poorly designed OEM filler cap would fail on the road or that some malefactor would take it (or worse, dump something in and replace it). If the cap failed or went missing, you would be stranded until you could seal things up. And if someone decided to put som...

Re: Annual Hungry Mother Weekend (Virginia)

Another great Hungy Mother weekend, with just the right amount of precipitation. Great seeing a lot of you all again and meeting some for the first time. Now - who's handling the arrangements for next year? Charlie "'Twas a woman who drove me to drink, and I never had the courtesy to thank her ...

Employing my unparalleled grasp of the obvious: A 40% chance of precipitation means a 60% probabilty of no rain which in turn means the odds are in our favor.

Re: Annual Hungry Mother Weekend (Virginia)

Boxer said This whole tooth ache business may be ruining my whole riding plans for the weekend. Come on Phil - are you going to let a simple thing like a root canal (and the likely crown you will also need) get in the way of riding? Seriously, I hope that you are able to get things fixed in time fo...

Re: Bike was done with the ride WAY before I was...

I would also check the wire harness thoroughly, paying particular attention to the loop that's gathered up under the fuel tank and to the primary wire at the 90° bend near the corner of the battery tray. Make sure that the wires are not contacting the tank or the battery tray, wearing off the insula...

Re: another victim-clutch splines; beyond disappointed

Craig -- I truly do feel your pain (re: the posts on my catastrophic wire harness failure last year). I still have not been able to get my '03 R with 28k back on the road and bought a Wee Strom to ease the 2-wheel jonesing. The DL650 is worth serious consideration as an alternate. It is remarkably s...

Re: Rubber wire wrap (housing) falling apart

The rubber outer covering of the wire harness seems to be a low quality material and is not very long-lasting. It only covers part of the harness however with friction tape covering the rest. The Magic Wrap suggestion seems appropriate but I'd guess that any good quality electrical tape will be suff...

Re: R1150r

Sorry to hear about your accident and hope you make a quick and complete recovery. You're a walking advertisement for why the right gear is important.

I have a Piemonte red fuel tank in very good shape but with a small dent - PM me if interested.

Re: Leaking gas....

Pete asked: What is a QD? Where are they on the bike? Pictures if possible please. Is it an easy fix? I'm mechanically and technically USELESS. Where can I buy the stainless steel replacements? Part numbers? Cost? Available in UK? QD = Quick Disconnect. The ones refered to are in the fuel lines (su...

Re: Say goodbye to the air-cooled BMW boxer engine . . .

Regardless of whether that picture is a CAD, a mockup or working model, fuggly doesn't begin to describe it. If that's what an air-cooled boxer engine is going to look like, BMW should stop wasting their R&D budget on it. I've always been a "form follows function" guy and so love both ...

Re: My spline shaft failed today

By way of comparison, I had no takers for my '03 with 28k at $2,900 when I put it up for sale during the winter. The bike had had a wire harness meltdown but I had already replaced the failed harness (though I had not completed reassembling the bike). I can understand a buyer's hesitancy however: Ev...

Re: R1150R Center of Gravity

The R1150R is a fairly heavy bike but as others have noted, the weight is not apparent when moving. I don't think that the CG is high - most of the "awkwardness" is really just the relatively high curb weight - in fact the mass is well-distributed making the bike a joy to handle at speed. ...

Re: Annual Hungry Mother Weekend (Virginia)

Hi all -- In stark contrast to last year when I had no working 2-wheel transportation, this year I should have at least have one servicable motorcycle as I've recently purchased an '04 DL650. I'm hoping that my V-twin will be welcomed at HMSP this August by her flat-twin cousins and if I may be so b...

Doug -- Condolences on the shaft failure and congradulations on the new purchase. My experince with my R1150R was somewhat similar, although in my case the failure was my wire harness. I'm still in the process of getting my R back on the road but, in the meantime I bought a DL650 and will enjoy not ...

Re: New guy, question

I can only speak to the Roadster, not the Rockster, though there are not many differences between the two. I have a 29" inch inseam and can not quite flatfoot my '03 R1150R. I removed the rubber spacers under the seat which lowers the height by maybe 1/2"; if I were truly bothered I'd get ...

Re: Certain doubts

many of you complain over the uncomfortable riding position on the R1150R, cramped knees and hard seats. . . Riding comfort is very subjective. I find the R1150R to be quite comfortable both for long distances and short, spirited rides. The seat is a bit hard and not the perfect shape for all (incl...
