Interesting - but right now you can only go by what your eyes see. Lots of things could have caused what looks like some sort of contamination, but the logical course is to clean everything and start over.

Re: Front Brake Reservoir Gunk

At this point all you can do is clean everything, install the new line, flush the entire system and keep an eye on it.

Re: Head Lamp cracked-Alternatives?

I guess this is FYI for someone looking for a headlight shield; I lost the aftermarket shield I had on my headlight for a lot of miles to an unfortunate encounter with a pot hole in Northern California, didn't notice it was gone till I did the after trip clean up. The original one I had came from a ...

Your correct. Using the suggested amount is usually the best idea.

75 - I have 130,000+ on the bike. it's been in all the lower 48 (except Rhode Island) and most of the Canadian provinces. Across the Country four times. The bike is set up for long days in the saddle, with everything that makes for an easy day. I've found it willing to do everything from long days o...

Longest day on my R, 1280 miles (18 hours) but that was in my younger days back when I was 72.

Re: Potential new R12R rider...

Over here they call people that trust the fuel gauge ------------pedestrians.
I've put in 5.7 gal when the computer told me (and the gas gauge showed) 40 miles to go. Once I ran out at 30 miles left to go and the gas gauge showed two bars. I usually fill at 200 miles.

Most (if not all) of the ones that came to the States had the computer and I think that is the fuel gauge and oil temp. Maybe not, I've never seen one that didn't have the computer.

Re: Potential new R12R rider...

They're actually custom valve covers made by CC Products in California (long out of production). http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff308/mogu83/BMW%2071/wallppr2_zpsxejesgds.jpg . . . The tank bag is the one that BMW makes for the R1200R. A relatively well made bag except that the map case (clear p...

Re: Potential new R12R rider...

IMHO I think the 1200R will fit your needs nicely. It's the closest thing BMW makes to bikes from the 80's, add the proper accessories and it will fill any niche you ask it to fill. I use mine mostly for extended motorcycle camping and going to rallies with very little use in my home State (other le...

I've had a cover on since the bike was new, but I've been keeping an eye out for a replacement (just to have one) but have never seen one.
Good luck.

Re: Lighting Upgrade Question

I have the original tail light with a halogen bulb (brighter), the P3s and the directionals have LED units in them. I've also replaced the reflectors on the saddle bags with LED clearance lights that fit right into the slots in the bags and look like the original reflector units (can be seen from be...

Re: Lighting Upgrade Question

I have the Skene P3 lights on the back of my R1200R and I'm very satisfied with them. Easy to hook up I tapped them into the tail and brake lights under the seat, the Can Bus doesn't know their there. A friend just put them on her bike and I think their brighter than the ones I have that are a few y...

Re: Really Virginia/DC No riders today? 28 F that bad?

Ride on my brother, cold, rain, sleet or snow ........ do not be deterred, for you will only be here once, and nothing is sadder than for a man to lay on his death bed and regret things not done. Thing is, all bravado aside, the man that rides on through sleet and snow will likely end up in a bed. P...

Re: Would you consider a 2002 Fat Boy as a second bike, why or why not?

OPINION TIME: As far as long distance riding; I have a 2007 R1200R, Corbin seat and Ohlins shocks and it rides better than my Honda Valkyrie (similar to Road King suspension wise) which is twice as heavy than the Beemer. The Valk has aftermarket suspension but it doesn't come close to the Beemer fo...

Re: Rear Drive Pinion seal

Newportcycle suggested I contact Jim Bade (JimVonBaden.com) and get his opinion. Finally, someone that has actually worked in the area I'm interested in. Jim says the seal will not slide past the nut, it has to come off. Then starts the list of jigs and special tools. So I drop back to plan B, wait...

Re: Rear Drive Pinion seal

Not the nut - the cup. Sometimes you can catch the inside edge of the spline and tap it out. At least that's how it works on some 4WD front ends. Thing is the ones on trucks are kind of loose (maybe 50 Fp) but the MC one is 180Nm (130 Fp) and I'm sure it's a soft alloy. I've looked all over the net ...
