Re: 2004 r1150r oil change question

If it were my bike and it had been a year since I last changed the oil, I'd certainly change it now. I'd also spend a couple of bucks on the BMW oil filter wrench. From the dealer it's about $18 but you can get one here for quite a bit less: http://www.beemerboneyard.com/kohfilterwr.html They also s...

Re: Let's make a list of big $ repairs

Warning: Long post Let’s define high-cost as any repair costing more than $1,000. Seems to me that there are 3 types of high-cost repairs. Type 1 – failures requiring repairs/renewals occurring as result of normal wear. While occasionally expensive, these "failures" should be expected ...

Re: Let's make a list of big $ repairs

Replacement of a shorted wire harness could be as much as $3,500 (Parts ~ $1,500, Labor ~ $2,000). Can be prevented by regular inspection of the harness with particular attention paid to 2 places: The top of the harness under the fuel tank (requires tank removal but well worth the trouble) and the r...

Re: Surging & poor performance -- Need Help

rd -- I'm sure others with more technical savvy will chime in on this but it certainly can't hurt to clean the brass screws. Cost is right too. As far as the fuel filter, I don't think that a clogged filter will result in surging - if it's clogged, it's restricting the fuel flow more or less constan...

Re: Airhead advice

Thanks to all for the replies. I've looked a couple of DL and SV650's but haven't truly made up my mind and am still tempted by some of airheads I've seen. I'm leaning very much toward the Vstrom though. My brother had one and I had chance to ride it a couple of times. Always liked the bike and it r...

Bob --

The Motopak soft luggage looks like it's well made and it's certainly priced right.

No personal experience with them but others have good things to say about 'em.

Re: knocking sound

A long time ago, when I actually had a Roadster that ran, I'd get some knocking/rattling from the left jug on start up or very occasionally if I lugged it in higher gear. The cam chain tensioner upgrade fixed it. Fairly inexpensive - the parts are about $70 and you can do the work yourself. Now, if ...

Re: Lubing cables

Steve - I don't think anyone was trying to "dis" you and you shouldn't let the comments that are contrary stop you from posting about anything. There's a lot of subjectivity involved with most of this stuff and I have no doubt that your throttle cables work better now than before. Could b...

Airhead advice

OK, I know. This is an oilhead forum and specifically the Roadster forum. But I gotta ask the question: Is the R75/5 as much of a hoot to own and ride as it is to look at? A "friend", knowing that I've been sans ride for some time now - and jonesing heavily for some saddle time, sent me a ...

Re: Harness part deux: The search for enlightenment

Sweatmark: The problem I ran into was that there appear to be a number of connectors on the ABS harness (the basic harness, not the ABS branch) that that are different and can't mate with their counterparts. If it was a simple matter of just a different connector, I would have considered grafting t...

I've been told the same thing: Teflon coating and no lubrication recommended. The experience of some of the guys on this board seems to pont to a pretty long life for the cables.

There is always this solution: "The Grifter is a handy box that fits underneath your license plate and provides a locked storage box for documents, valuables, small tools, and so forth. The Grifter includes two keys, and fits virtually any motorcycle." http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/...

Re: GPS: To wire or not to wire... that is the question.

If you have the accessory outlet, you could simply buy a plug and wire the GPS to it. This This is what I did a number of years ago as "temporary" solution to hard wiring my GPS - I've never gotten around to the permanent solution. It's pretty convienient - it only takes a minute or 2 to p...

Re: Harness part deux: The search for enlightenment

Oliver asked: didn't you win an auction for a used harness? What happened to that one? I did purchase a harness from *bay, knowing that it was from a 2005 ABS bike (mine's a 2003 non-ABS). It was cheap enough that it was worth the gamble that it would work. Unfortunately, it won't. I still have it ...

Harness part deux: The search for enlightenment

I need some advice and counsel regarding the eventual disposition of my Roadster. It’s become increasing apparent that the likelihood of finding a serviceable salvaged wire harness is pretty slim for a couple of reasons. One is that there are just not that many R1150Rs out there and the subset of ...

May want to check the wire bundle under the fuel tank . . .
An unlikely culprit but one worth keeping an eye on.

Re: Ideas to resolve R1150R Issues Needed

Ritchard is on the right track but do a valve clearance adjustment first, then a TB synch. These are both relatively easy to do yourself (search for the instructions on this site or Google OVAD and TBS4D for some other clear, easy to follow instructions). My bet is that if you do both of these, you'...

Re: Sparks, then no windshied motor on '02 R1150RT

If it's not a fuse, maybe a fusible link somwhere in the windscreen wiring? BMW also uses small ground wires in various locations on R bikes - maybe one of those is shorted out?
No guesses about the clock though.
