Re: R1150R maintenance and repair in Northern Virginia

Yeah, Morton's is the closest of the BMW shops. Actually, Bob's BMW in Jessup, MD is about 20 miles closer to you than Morton's (roughly a 37 mile drive vs. a 56 mile drive from Tysons Corner). They are both quality places. I've also used Anton, and he's a straight-up fellow. His prices are much be...

Re: 200k mile club?

My '04 is pushing 80,000 miles and still going strong. Only real problems I've had are the primary spark plug coils going out on me. Otherwise, typical maintenance.

Re: Hippo hands

Zeke, I have a pair of hippo-hand like covers. I used them many years ago, and only needed them on the coldest of days. They are in fact: Not attractive, no matter how you look at them (unless you are blind) a good way to keep your hands warm on extremely cold days. You're welcome to try mine out if...

Did you trade/sell the R-R, or keep it? I'm sure YLW will love riding on the back of the comfy, roomy GS.

Non-ride (blizzard bash)

I know, not really a ride, but more of a non-ride. I know the big 2010 "blizzard" swept right across the country and dumped white stuff on a lot of people but it had a big impact on the Washington DC area, since we don't usually get this much snow in such a short period. We had two back to...

Re: I really think I'm gonna buy this one!

As its been pointed out, you will need to change all the fluids ASAP. Agreed. They're easy to do yourself. I would install new tires and check the the bike very throughly before venturing out with it. Definitely. Even if the tires have a lot of tread left and don't leak, they will probably not hand...

Re: Wheelies on the R

I think riding wheelies is a great way to save the environment...since you're saving the tread on the front tire, that's less old tires in the yard that my wife doesn't nag me about.

Re: Slow Starter Motor / 04 R1150R 3800 miles

I tend to believe it's an antifreeze and radiator issue. 8) Wayne's correct - a small, but important area we overlooked. As we all know, as anti-freeze sits, it becomes seperated. Seperated into two parts - good and bad antifreeze (kind of like in Spiderman 3, where there was a good and bad Spiderm...

Re: Slow Starter Motor / 04 R1150R 3800 miles

Last bit of info....immediately after i changed the oil and installed the new battery, I was able to get the bike to fire and run for a few minutes. At that time, the starter turned over "normally" and fired the bike to my surprise within just a few revolutions..the bike stumbled for a mi...

I was in DC today on the beltway and saw a fella on a bike pass me in the HOV lane (in the rain) and lane splitting. Traffic was moving at a fair pace so it wasn't like the usual parking lot. Scary! Ride Safe! Wayne That may've been me...   I did ride yesterday, and the ride ho...

Re: Has anybody had any luck plugging a Metzler tire?

I patched a Z6 in the past (I had to look at my service log). I put on about 2000 miles after patching it so my plug worked. I have the standard gooey rope plugs with straightforward tools. I don't recall it being hard to ream and plug; I've plugged Dunlops too and my memory is the same for them all...

Re: Shoe rubs pavement in turn, how close are heads to pavement?

If you're cylinder heads are scraping the ground, then it's too late. You'll scrape your shoe (if riding lazy, like Vann explained), possibly your centerstand (depending on pre-load), then the footpeg before the heads scrape. If you do end up scraping your heads, then you may want to look into a mor...

Re: Bosch O2 Sensor Replacement

About the Beemer OilHeads, a bad O2 sensor should set a trouble code -and- your fuel economy will worsen ~4MPG highway (with the yellow CCP installed). . OK, my bike doesn't have a CCP installed - never has since it was new. Our local club is having a tech day this weekend and someone will be there...

There is one of those for sale as well. Is the 1150 a lot better? The 1100 is quite cheap!
One of the biggest differences between the R1100 and R1150 layouts is the addition of a sixth gear. If you're planning on putting on some highway miles, then go with the R1150RT.
