Maybe Somebody Will Find This Useful... - Part #'s

Post by dallara »

Maybe some of you might find this useful...

I keep sort of a running text file of various part numbers, interchangeable aftermarket repair items, etc. going on my computer, and update it from time to time... Sticking in some posted material from folks here, and from articles I see, etc. I even print out a copy and stick it in my tail pack when I head out on trip, just in case. It is probably too lengthy for some of you here, but I thought it might help some so I decided to post it. Notice the names of some posters here who contributed to it.

Remember, it is a "work-in-progress" and is by no means complete. Hope you find some of the info useful.

About Using Toyota Oil Filters
-----------------------------------
"My brother and I have been using them for over 5 years on various oilheads. Advantages include powdercoated housing, tabs that hold the o-ring in place so you can never double gasket it, pressure relief valve opening at 14.3 psi should the filter clog, anti-drain back valve, spring steel element guide that holds the element paper in place and larger total surface area on the paper element. I will get you the part number and price in a subsequent reply after lunch."

"Toyota brand oil filters. The BMW filter wrench WILL NOT fit these filters.
08922-02011 Dlr cost.$2.92 Retail $5.50 Does not have the captured o-ring. 90915-YZZB9 Dlr cost $4.41 Retail $7.34. Has the captured o-ring and requires a different fillter cap wrench than the previous filter or the BMW filter. Also used in the Lexus division, hence the higher cost/sale????????

Check with your dealer on availiability. I always buy in case lots.
I work for a dealer and have been cross checking filters on all my bikes for years. My Yamaha GTS1000 currently uses a Wix crossover at $3.20 vz $12.00 for a genuine Yamaha filter

To date these Toyota filters have been used on a GS1100, GS1150, R1100R and RT1100 with no leaks or engine lubrication concerns."

Some 6,000 Mile Maintenance Info

Tips & lessons learned – 60k Service
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips & lessons learned – 60k Service

It seems like every time I perform a service on this bike I learn something new! I feel it is important that we share these “lessons learned” so we don’t all have to “invent the wheel” all over again! The following are just a few small items that I want to pass on – These little tips were learned at the 60,000 mile service I performed on my bike a few days ago. Please keep in mind that I am not recommending any particular technique or
service – just passing on my own experiences.

Valve check/adjustment – Due every 6,000 miles

In the beginning, I checked my valves every 6,000 miles per the owner’s manual. After about the first ten checks I realized they are never out of spec and I decided to check them every 12,000 miles. The valves were checked on this service after 12,000 miles – they were exactly where they were 12,000 miles ago! A call to a BMW mechanic confirmed that after a few checks they really seldom move out of tolerance. My intention is to
check them every 12,000 miles – you decide what you feel is best.

The Auto Lite Platinum spark plugs were like new after 12,000 miles! I will continue to use these plugs.

Air Filter Change

Changing the air filter appears to be a simple straight forward job! For the life of me, I can not get it seated and the lid back on unless I take the tank off! Maybe it can be done – I can’t do it. I spent 45 minutes trying to get it seated and the lid secured! I finally spent ten minutes and removed the fuel tank and did the job in just a few minutes. Tip: If you have any trouble getting the air filter in, just take that fuel tank off and be done with it – only takes a few minutes to get the tank off and also provides a chance to check the battery!

Alternator Belt Check

Although not a scheduled maintenance item, I always check the belt each 6,000 miles. Why not? Is easy to check! After 25,000 miles the belt is still looking like new and is still at the proper tension.

Rear Brake Pad Check

Many people wear rear pads fast. Someone put up a good procedure to reduce this wear. I replaced the pads about 10,000 miles ago and performed the procedure of cleaning the guide pin and lubricating the pin. It must be working as my pads show no wear at all!

Re-connecting the quick disconnect fuel lines

This is a pain! Even when you think they are connected they are likely not connected! I struggled with these lines for 20 minutes and then remembered a posting here suggesting the use of white Lithium Grease to help them slide in! Oh Yeah! Slide in baby! Well, with just a touch of grease they do indeed slide in easily and lock as they are supposed to do. Try the grease thing next time you have to reconnect these things!

Valve Adjustment Procedure

I have written up detailed step by step instructions for checking and adjusting valves.

Very detailed and many have told me they are able to do the job with no trouble just following the outline I provided. I know there are many such procedures written up, some 30 some pages long and some two pages long – if you are contemplating doing this job take a look at mine and decide if they are good for you. Please, no flaming me here!

These are my procedures made up with the help of a Senior BMW mechanic – using the “Rotate the tire to get TDC technique. Works for me and will for you. If you want them

email me at:

[email protected]

Hope this will help someone with their servicing.

Bill

"Sticky" This?

Post by dallara »

Putting this up as a "Sticky" is fine by me, and I hope all of you will see that credit for a large part of this list came from others and not me... I just collected it along the way.

Maybe it could be put up as a "Sticky" that people could add to as they found parts, part numbers, etc. Hopefully members here will add to it and make it more useable and complete for all of us.

BTW, thanks to each and everyone of you who unknowingly contributed to this list. Some of the names have been lost with the passage of time, and I apologize for that.

If it gets "Sticky'ed" I will try to add to it as I come across different part numbers, etc.

Cheers!
