R1150R Simple Tasks w/ OnboardTool Kit (w/ minor additions)

Post by MikeCam »

Please note, comment, add, subtract etc. I believe the tool kit comes with everything except 4 tools to do these basic tasks at home or on the road. But other brains are needed....

Whaycoc's list: http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=711

Remove front wheel and brake calipers:
Torx #45 for brake caliper retainer bolts (torque 30fp)
6mm Allen wrench for pinch bolts on front forks (torque 12 fp)
17mm Lug wrench for axle retainer bolt (torque 30 fp)
That bar thingee like a screwdriver arm for prying the axle out.
Note: It helps to have some axle grease and a rubber mallet.

Remove rear wheel and rear brake caliper:
Torx wrench #45 for brake caliper retainer bolts (torque 30fp)
Torx wrench #40 for exhaust pipe hanger bolt (no torque value)
Lug wrench 17mm for wheel bolts (torque 75fp)
Flat bladed screwdriver for keeping brake pads separated.
Note: It helps to have three arms, four eyes, and skinny fingers to replace the spacer, align the brake pads, and mount the lugs properly. It is also useful to have a wedge of wood to hold the rear wheel elevated whilst aligning all the parts. 2-3" thick, etc.

Check valve clearance:
Torx wrench #40 to remove valve cover (torque 6fp).
Spark plug wire cap puller (little plastic thingee).
10 mm open end wrench for retainer nut (torque 6fp)
[these are in my kit but I guess I added them]
3 mm hex Allen wrench
.15mm and .30mm feeler gauge(s)

Note: Helps to have a rubber mallet for removing and replacing the valve covers (gently). Helps to read the Anton Method or the OVAD method for valve adjustment (links forthcoming eventually, I guess).

Check transmission fluid:
8mm hex Allen wrench [added to kit] (torque 17fp)
Fill to bottom of filler hole.

Check Final Drive fluid:
6mm hex Allen wrench (torque 17fp)
19mm box end wrench (torque 17 fp)
Fill to bottom of lowest thread.

Adjust front/rear shock damping:
Flat bladed screwdriver

Check air filter:
Phillips screw driver

Check brake/clutch fluids:
Centerstand (no additional tools).

Oil Change:
8mm hex Allen wrench (added) for drain plug (torque 23 fp)
Oil filter wrench and 3/8 drive ratchet handle (added) (torque 8 fp)

Drain pan, etc,etc.

FYI/FWIW Foot Pounds (fp) are approx. 75% of Newton meters (Nm)
The Older I Get, The Less I Know.
